[A short-term treatment of tinea corporis and tinea cruris with oral terbinafine].

We studied the effectiveness of short-term treatment of tinea corporis and tinea cruris with oral terbinafine at 250 mg/day for 2-3 days. The treatment on an open study basis consisted of two groups: the first group (n=17) was given 250 mg/day for two consecutive days, and the second group (n=24) was given the same dose for three consecutive days. No patient was treated topically. Effectiveness was evaluated at the end of the second week both clinically and mycologically (KOH examination and culture). In the two-day group, five cases showed an excellent response, three had a good response and

A clinicomycological study of cutaneous mycoses in sawai man singh hospital of jaipur, north India.

BACKGROUND: Because of the widespread prevalence of the various cutaneous mycoses in a tropical country like India, it is important to know … es (NDM) were isolated from 66.6% (40/60) and 33.3% (20/60) of the positive cultures, respectively. Tinea capitis (50%) 30/60 was the most frequent clinical pattern and genus Trichophyton violaceum 32.5% (13/40) was the most common isolate in dermatophytosis-positive samples. Among the patients positive for NDM by culture, Tinea unguium 35% (7/20) was the most …

Practical management of hair loss.

OBJECTIVE: To describe an organized diagnostic approach for both nonscarring and scarring alopecias to help family physicians establish an a … elogen effluvium, and alopecia areata. Other disorders include trichotillomania, traction alopecia, tinea capitis, and hair shaft abnormalities. Scarring alopecia is caused by trauma, infections, discoid lupus erythematosus, or lichen planus. Key to establishing an accurate diagnosis is a detailed history, including medication use, systemic illnesses, endocrine …

Multiple Basal Cell Carcinomas of the Scalp After Radiotherapy: Genomic Study in a Case With Latency Period Over 80 Years.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) has been linked mostly to ultraviolet radiation exposure, but ionizing radiation has also been implicated in the genesis of a subset of BCCs occurring after radiotherapy. We present a 93-year-old woman with 4 BCCs of the scalp after radiotherapy for tinea capitis, diagnosed after a latency period of over 80 years. The largest lesion was located on the right temporal region and corresponded to a BCC of mixed type, with nodular, infiltrative, and micronodular components. We performed genomic study with array comparative genomic hybridization in samples from each BCC, w…

Intracranial meningiomas following low-dose irradiation to the head.

Earlier reports have suggested that low-dose ionizing irradiation might be involved in induction of intracranial meningiomas. One of the pro … l during the years 1952 to 1981 in individuals treated in childhood with low-dose x-ray therapy for tinea capitis. Although the individual PIM does not seem to differ from a "spontaneous" meningioma, this study indicates that PIM's as a group have distinct characteristics, namely, their location at the site of maximal irradiation, and features suggesting rapid …

Protocol for the systematic review of the prevention, treatment and public health management of impetigo, scabies and fungal skin infections in resource-limited settings.

BACKGROUND: Impetigo, scabies, and fungal skin infections disproportionately affect populations in resource-limited settings. Evidence for s … interest will be the clinical cure or decrease in prevalence of impetigo, scabies, crusted scabies, tinea capitis, tinea corporis or tinea unguium. Two independent reviewers will perform eligibility assessment and data extraction using standardised electronic forms. Risk of bias assessment will be undertaken by two independent reviewers according to the Cochran …

Shifting etiological agents of dermatophytosis: a molecular epidemiological study from Iran.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dermatophytosis is a significant worldwide health concern, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Tinea unguium (TU) and Tinea capitis (TC) are among the most prevalent clinical manifestations of dermatophytosis caused by several dermatophyte fungi. This study investigated the molecular epidemiology and distribution of dermatophytes causing TU and TC in Tehran, Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From March 2023 to March 2024, a clinical mycology center in Tehran received 342 suspected cases of TU and TC. The diagnostic methods included the conventional and mole…

[Dermatophytosis with concurrent lesions in distant locations. Prognostic and therapeutic significance].

INTRODUCTION: Recurrence and a lack of treatment response are common in dermatophytosis. In patients with cutaneous and concurrent toenail lesions, often only the former are investigated, which may result in inappropriate treatment due to misdiagnosis. METHODS: Between January 2000 and April 2004, we prospectively studied the presence of dermatophytic fungi in lesions other than those prompting the consultation to further investigate the diagnosis. RESULTS: We prospectively identified 61 patients with dermatophytosis and concurrent lesions caused by the same fungus at sites distant from the

Kerion of the pubis and vulva with bacterial superinfection: a rare occurrence.

Kerion is a severe hypersensitivity reaction to fungal infection that is rarely seen in the groin. Frequent shaving of pubic hair and religious conservatism surrounding genital hygiene are common among Bedouin women in the Negev Desert, and may predispose to kerion. This case highlights the clinical course of a 20-year-old Bedouin woman who presented with severe kerion celsi of the pubis and vulva with secondary bacterial infection. The patient was successfully treated with intravenous antibiotics, oral antifungal medication and wet topical dressings. The case outlines the risk factors and tre

The definition of Trichophyton rubrum syndrome.

Although chronic widespread dermatophyte infection is reported widely in the literature, neither a uniform nomenclature, nor even a clear definition of this syndrome have been established so far. Thus, we suggest Trichophyton rubrum syndrome (TRS) for denomination and define the following obligatory clinical and mycological criteria for TRS. (A) Skin lesions at the following four sites: (1) feet, often involving soles; (2) hands, often involving palms; (3) nails; and (4) at least one lesion in another location than (1) (2) or (3), except for groins. (B) Positive microscopic analyses of potassi

Molecular targets for antifungals in amino acid and protein biosynthetic pathways.

Fungi cause death of over 1.5 million people every year, while cutaneous mycoses are among the most common infections in the world. Mycoses vary greatly in severity, there are long-term skin (ringworm), nail or hair infections (tinea capitis), recurrent like vaginal candidiasis or severe, life-threatening systemic, multiorgan infections. In the last few years, increasing importance is attached to the health and economic problems caused by fungal pathogens. There is a growing need for improvement of the availability of antifungal drugs, decreasing their prices and reducing side effects. Searchi…

Currently, a mycid is defined as hyperergic reaction that develops from a remote localized infection and in which no fungus is detectable. C … y Trichophyton mentagrophytes. In addition to lichen trichophyticus, dermatophytids associated with tinea capitis may show high clinical variability. They often occur under systemic antimycotic therapy and have to be differentiated from drug reactions. In addition to systemic antimycotic therapy and, if necessary, a short-term application of oral glucocorticoid …

[Trichophyton tonsurans associated with non-albicans Candida species in hands onychomycosis about a Moroccan case].

INTRODUCTION: Trichophyton tonsurans is an anthropophilic dermatophyte, frequent in the USA and in Asia where it is responsible for causing tinea capitis. At present, we attend an emergence of this species in certain regions where it was not or little met. Here, we report a case of onychomycosis of the hand due to T. tonsurans associated with non-albicans Candida species at an adult woman. OBSERVATION: The patient is a 62-year-old woman, with hypertension and diabetes. She reports the rather frequent use of chemical cleaners for the housework. She presented one year previously a distal onycho…
