Facial and oral reconstruction following trauma and failed chin implant: a case report.

Functional and esthetic reconstruction of a patient with microgenia who sustained traumatic injury was successfully accomplished using Brånemark System osseointegrated implants (Nobel Biocare USA, Inc., Yorba Linda, CA) to support a permanent dental prosthesis following mechanical and biologic reconstruction of the anterior mandible and chin. A 25-year-old glycine chin implant previously used for facial esthetic enhancement had eroded the anterior cortical plate and migrated through the medullary bone, compressing the periosteum into the apex of the anterior tooth roots. Further destruction of

Taurodontism: an anomaly of teeth reflecting disruptive developmental homeostasis.

Two models concerning morphometric traits occurring frequently in aneuploidy states posit, respectively, 1) that they reflect the expression of specific major oligogenes for that trait on the chromosome involved or 2) that they result from a generalized disruption of developmental homeostasis. In contrast to previous studies that have investigated variations in morphometric traits in a single aneuploidy state, this study investigates a single morphometric trait, taurodontism, as it occurs in otherwise normal individuals, in nonchromosomal syndromes, and in aneuploidy syndromes to determine whe

Remodelling processes following transplantation of dental germs in dogs.

Dental germs with different amounts of root development were transplanted from the left side to the right side, and vice versa, in young beagle dogs. The unerupted premolars had been taken out by osteotomy. After transplantation, the dental germs were covered with mucosa. The observation period lasted 7 postoperative weeks. Histological examination of the remodelling processes of the bone and tooth-tissue was carried out by polychromatic sequential labelling. All the transplanted dental germs remained vital, and the eruption continued to the normal occlusion level. From this, it follows that e

Pre-operative diagnostic radiograph interpretation by general dental practitioners for root canal treatment.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate which radicular radiographic features general dentists want to interpret, determine which of the radicular radiographic features general dentists interpret and which ones they miss in a diagnostic radiograph and correlate how accurately general dentists are able to interpret radiographic features. METHODS: 20 general dental practitioners were selected and given 2 sets of questionnaires. The first set asked them to fill out the findings they would elucidate in a diagnostic radiograph while the second set consisted of 30 randomly selected intrao

Effects of the bisphosphonate alendronate on molars of young rats after lateral luxation.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The bisphosphonate alendronate (ALN) was employed with the aim of investigating its effects on dental and periodontal tissues after lateral luxation of developing molars. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-one-day-old Wistar rats had their second upper molars laterally luxated. Daily 2.5 mg kg(-1) ALN injections started at the day of the luxation; controls received sterile saline solution. The teeth were analyzed 7, 14, and 21 days after the procedure. On the days cited, the maxillae were fixed, decalcified, and embedded in paraffin or Spurr resin. The paraffin sections were sta

The effects of ageing on the biomechanical properties of root dentine and fracture.

OBJECTIVES: Knowledge of the mechanical behaviour of root dentine can facilitate better understanding of spontaneous vertical root fracture (VRF), an age-related disease initiated mainly at the root apex. We tested the hypothesis that the biomechanical properties of root dentine change with ageing. METHODS: Sixteen human premolars were divided into "old" (17-30 years) and "young" (50-80 years) groups. The elastic modulus, nano-hardness, micro-hardness, elemental contents, tubular density/area of root dentine in cervical, middle and apical root regions were evaluated using atomic force microsc

Physical properties of root cementum: part 23. Effects of 2 or 3 weekly reactivated continuous or intermittent orthodontic forces on root resorption and tooth movement: a microcomputed tomography study.

INTRODUCTION: The force application period is a modifiable factor in root resorption. There is still ambiguity if the continuity of force application is advantageous in terms of root resorption and tooth movement. In this prospective randomized clinical trial, we compared the effects of 2 reactivation periods of controlled-intermittent and continuous forces on root resorption and tooth movement. METHODS: Thirty-two patients were randomly divided into 2 groups: 2 weekly and 3 weekly reactivations. A split-mouth setup was used for the intermittent and continuous force comparisons. The intermitt

Factors affecting the timing of pulp extirpation in a sample of 66 replanted avulsed teeth in children and adolescents.

The management of 66 replanted avulsed permanent teeth in 46 patients over a 4-year period was studied. Treatment was compared with the recommendations in published guidelines for the management of avulsed permanent teeth. For total extra-alveolar times longer than 45 min, the pulps were extirpated in 96% of teeth. Extra-alveolar times longer than 45 min were associated with earlier pulp extirpation (median 16 days) compared with teeth with shorter extra-alveolar times (median 25 days). Endodontic treatment was postponed in teeth with open apices (median 27 days) compared with closed apices (m

Impacts of Contracted Endodontic Cavities on Instrumentation Efficacy and Biomechanical Responses in Maxillary Molars.

INTRODUCTION: Recently, we reported that in mandibular molars contracted endodontic cavities (CECs) improved fracture strength compared with traditional endodontic cavities (TECs) but compromised instrumentation efficacy in distal canals. This study assessed the impacts of CECs on instrumentation efficacy and axial strain responses in maxillary molars. METHODS: Eighteen extracted intact maxillary molars were imaged with micro-computed tomographic imaging (12-μm voxel), assigned to CEC or TEC groups (n = 9/group), and accessed accordingly. Canals were instrumented (V-Taper2H; SSWhite Dental, L

Root resorption of self-ligating and conventional preadjusted brackets in severe anterior crowding Class I patients: a longitudinal retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: To test the null hypothesis that there is no difference in the apical root resorption seen after orthodontic treatment with the conventional brackets and the self-ligating brackets. METHODS: Pre-treatment and post-treatment periapical radio-graphs of 70 patients, (35 treated with the Damon3 0.022" bracket and 35 with the 0.022" 3 M bracket) were studied. The long cone paralleling technique was used for all the radio-graphs. Any image distortion between the pre-treatment and post-treatment radio-graph was calculated and compensated for by using the crown length measurements, on the

The Cole Midfoot Osteotomy: Clinical and Radiographic Retrospective Review of Five Patients (Six Feet) with Different Etiologies.

BACKGROUND: Cole osteotomy is performed in patients having a cavus deformity with the apex of the deformity in the midfoot. Correction of the deformity at this midfoot level improves foot and ankle stability by creating a plantigrade foot. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and radiographic results of six feet (five patients) that underwent Cole midfoot osteotomy (2011-2015). METHODS: The patients had different etiologies (spastic cerebral palsy, burn sequelae, spina bifida, and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease). Dorsal and slightly laterally based transverse wedge osteotomy through the navi

Proximity of premolar roots to maxillary sinus: a radiographic survey using cone-beam computed tomography.

INTRODUCTION: The proximity of the roots of the posterior maxillary teeth to the maxillary sinus is a constant challenge to the dental practitioner. Because the majority of studies have assessed the relationship regarding molars, the present study focused on premolars. METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomographic images of 192 patients were reconstructed in sagittal, coronal, and axial planes to quantify the distances between the root apices of the maxillary premolars and the adjacent maxillary sinus. Measurements were taken for each root, and data were correlated with age, sex, side, and presence
