Facial injuries, including maxillofacial trauma (MFT), are common in children and adolescents due to their age and bone maturation stage. Children's injuries are less common than adults' due to parental supervision and the flexibility of the facial bone. Causes of maxillofacial bone fractures (MFBF) vary based on socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental factors. Management of MFBF in children and adolescents should consider their growth and development stage. A systematic review is needed to understand the prevalence, pattern, and distribution of MFBF in Saudi Arabia. This systematic review

This article provides a narrative review of risk factors of vertical root fractures (VRFs) in endodontically treated teeth, focusing on treatment-related factors and occlusal factors. Studies on treatment-related risk factors include experimental studies on the formation of dentinal microcracks caused by different root canal preparation instruments, as well as experimental studies on the variations in dentine volume and fracture resistance resulting from different access cavity and root canal preparation instruments. Studies on occlusal risk factors encompass high-risk occlusal forces, stress

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical pattern of alveolar bone resorption associated with vertically fractured, endodontically treated teeth in correlation to clinical symptoms.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The pattern of bone resorption was evaluated in 66 maxillary premolars, 13 mandibular premolars, and 31 mesial roots of mandibular molars extracted during an 18-month period because of vertical root fractures. Type and duration of symptoms were recorded and correlated to the pattern of bone resorption.
RESULTS: A V-shaped pattern osseous defect (dehiscence) was typical (91%) to the buccal plate rath

Lesions to the radicular bifurcation generally entail the removal of the tooth in question. This leads to the need to create a prosthetic bridge to compensate for the absence of the extracted tooth. This solution is not readily accepted by the patient who wishes to avoid involving other teeth. In these cases rhizectomy and the execution of an inlay on an adjacent tooth may satisfy the patient and resolve the clinical symptoms. The authors report a case of rhizectomy and prosthetic reconstruction of a tooth using inlay.

This case report features a female patient with the chief complaint of needing to replace an anterior crown. After a comprehensive oral assessment and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) radiographic examination, it was determined that the crown on Tooth #9 was subgingivally fractured. The procedure involved atraumatic extraction of Tooth #9, followed by immediate implant placement. Xenograft bone graft material was placed to complete the space between the buccal bone and the implant. A connective tissue graft (CTG), 1 mm thick and 5 mm wide, was harvested from the palate and placed. The fina

The aim of this study was to determine the safest length of monocortical screws that can be inserted for the treatment of mandibular fractures following Champy's technique. Fifty cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of hemi-mandibles were studied. Linear measurements were taken from the buccal cortical plate to the tooth apex, from the canine to the second premolar, and from the buccal cortical plate to the tooth apex and the inferior alveolar canal in the molar area. The minimum values of the horizontal distances both at the level of the apex and the inferior alveolar canal at the secon

Although decayed/fractured teeth can be reconstructed minimally invasively and nearly invisibly using adhesive technology, the clinical longevity of dental composite restorations is still too short. Water sorption is thought to be the principal cause of destabilization of the biomaterial-tooth bond. However, the actual mechanisms of interfacial degradation are far from understood. Here we report how nano-controlled molecular interaction at the biomaterial-hard tissue interface can improve bond durability. The use of functional monomers with a strong chemical affinity for the calcium in hydroxy

Intrusive luxation is a serious dental injury in the permanent dentition that has a poor prognosis. There is a lock of consensus concerning the management of intruded permanent teeth because of a small number of published studies and the injury's complicated nature. The purpose of this report was to present the successful outcome of a completely intruded permanent maxillary right central incisor with a concomitant uncomplicated enamel fracture in a 9-year-old boy. The intruded tooth was repositioned via surgical extrusion and splinted with a semirigid splint for three weeks. Clinical and radio

A vertical root fracture (VRF) is a frustrating complication that may occur following root canal treatment, and in almost every case leads to the extraction of the affected tooth. This type of fracture is usually diagnosed by secondary symptoms that develop some time after primary treatment, often when prosthodontic restoration has already been completed. The fracture line itself is often not directly visible, and therefore clinical and radiographic signs and symptoms indicate the diagnosis indirectly. Knowledge of the condition and pathogenesis of VRF is required in order to avoid hopeless tr

Museum specimens (maxillae and/or mandibles) from 317 polar bears (Ursus maritimus) were examined macroscopically according to predefined criteria and 249 specimens were included in this study. The specimens were acquired between 1906 and 2011. There were 126 specimens (50.6%) from male animals, 93 (37.3%) from female animals and 30 (12.1%) from animals of unknown sex. The ages of the animals ranged from neonate to adult, with 125 adults (50.2%) and 124 young adults (49.8%) included and neonates/juveniles excluded from the study. The number of teeth available for examination was 7,638 (73.5%);

The objectives of this study were to (i) characterize epidemiologic trends in anterior permanent tooth trauma in a sample of children and adolescents (ii) examine the relationship of crown fractures (CF) and concomitant root fractures (RF) to determine if CFs are protective against RFs and (iii) examine the radiographic evidence of RFs to determine the value of obtaining three vertical periapical radiographic projections. This was an 8-year cross-sectional study of patients aged 6-18 with anterior permanent tooth trauma. We examined cases involving maxillary central/lateral incisors for which

This study assessed the stress distribution under occlusal forces in mandibular molars after utilizing several nickel-titanium rotary systems and identified potential root fracture patterns through finite element analysis (FEA). Five three-dimensionally printed mandibular molars were used, with one tooth left unshaped and the remaining four shaped using ProTaper Gold (Dentsply, Tulsa Dental Specialties, Tulsa, OK), Reciproc Blue (VDW, Munich, Germany), XP-endo Shaper (FKG Dentaire, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland), and Hyflex EDM (Coltene/Whaledent, Altst€atten, Switzerland) rotary systems. Tooth tissue loss due to dental caries is frequently challenging to restore, and this loss is made worse by proximal tooth borders that extend below the gingival margin. This report describes a digitally designed case in which the ferrule and supracrestal tissue attachment were preserved by simultaneous double magnetic extrusion of two root filled teeth. A 67-year-old male presented with the chief concern of a fractured maxillary left canine. The maxillary left lateral incisor and canine underwent rapid magnetic extrusion to create ferrules (3 mm). Eighteen months after treatment, the restorat

Endodontic management of the permanent immature tooth continues to be a challenge for both clinicians and researchers. Clinical concerns are primarily related to achieving adequate levels of disinfection as 'aggressive' instrumentation is contraindicated and hence there exists a much greater reliance on endodontic irrigants and medicaments. The open apex has also presented obturation difficulties, notably in controlling length. Long-term apexification procedures with calcium hydroxide have proven to be successful in retaining many of these immature infected teeth but due to their thin dentinal

Cemental tears have been described as detachment of cementum caused by trauma or aging. They often result in severe periodontal lesions that may necessitate the extraction of the affected tooth. This case report describes the clinical resolution of a periodontal lesion associated with a cemental tear. A maxillary central incisor was subjected to endodontic treatment twice with no resolution of a deep distobuccal pocket and a palatal sinus tract from its apical region. The preoperative differential diagnosis for the condition present on the tooth included a vertical fracture and a combined peri
