Port cities, as crucial nodes in global supply chains, face challenges from both intense traffic emissions and vulnerability to climate-related extremes due to pollution density. Effective and near-term mitigation strategies for greener road freight are imperative to reverse the increasing trend of emissions. This study utilizes a high-resolution emission inventory from 1.2 billion global positioning system trajectories of heavy-duty trucks in Shenzhen, a global port city, to evaluate the combined effects of road network development and fleet electrification on emissions from 2016 to 2035, pro

The authors implemented and assessed the effectiveness of a public health initiative aimed at reducing traffic-related air pollution exposure of the school community at four Cincinnati public schools. A partnership was fostered with academic environmental health researchers and community members. Anti-idling campaign materials were developed and education and training were provided to school bus drivers, students, parents, and school staff. Pledge drives and pre- and posteducation assessments were documented to measure the effectiveness of the program. After completing the educational componen

In Norway, children in kindergartens spend significant time outdoors under all weather conditions, and there is thus a natural concern about the quality of outdoor air. It is well known that air pollution is associated with a wide variety of adverse health impacts for children, with greater impact on children with asthma. Especially during winter and spring, kindergartens in Oslo that are situated close to streets with busy traffic, or in areas where wood burning is used for house heating, can experience many days with bad air quality. During these periods, updated information on air quality l

BACKGROUND: Pro-inflammatory conditions such as air pollution might induce biological ageing. However, the available evidence on such an impact in children is still very scarce. We studied in primary schoolchildren the association of ambient residential air pollution exposure with telomere length (TL) and mitochondrial DNA content (mtDNAc), two important targets of the core axis of ageing.
METHODS: Between 2012 and 2014, buccal TL and mtDNAc were repeatedly assessed using qPCR in 197 Belgian primary schoolchildren (mean age 10.3 years) as part of the COGNAC study. At the child's residence, re

OBJECTIVE: Migraine is a common recurrent headache disorder affecting 14% American adults. Although weather and air pollution are often reported by patients with migraine as precipitating factors, previous studies have had mixed results.
METHODS: We prospectively collected migraine headache onset data using electronic questionnaires from 98 adults with episodic migraine in the Greater Boston area (2016-2017). Each participant was followed for an average of 45 days for a total of 4406 days of observation. Temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure data were obtained from local wea

Transportation noise from road, rail, and aircraft traffic is now recognized as a major cardiovascular risk factor. In Europe, more than 113 million people are chronically exposed to levels above 55 dB(A), resulting in an estimated 1.3 million healthy life-years lost annually from traffic-related noise. Large epidemiological studies consistently demonstrate associations with ischemic heart disease, heart failure, stroke, and type 2 diabetes, with additional links to hypertension, atrial fibrillation, and obesity. Translational and experimental research has clarified the biological plausibility

OBJECTIVES: To study the association between short-term exposure to ultrafine particles and morbidity in Copenhagen, Denmark.
METHODS: We studied the association between urban background levels of the total number concentration of particles (NC(tot), 6-700 nm in diameter) measured at a single site (15 May 2001 to 31 December 2004) and hospital admissions due to cardiovascular (CVD) and respiratory disease (RD) in the elderly (age >or=65 years), and due to asthma in children (age 5-18 years). We examined these associations in the presence of PM(10), PM(2.5) (particulate matter <10 and 2.5 micr

BACKGROUND: Road traffic noise is a prevalent and known health hazard. However, little is known yet about its effect on children's cognition. We aimed to study the association between exposure to road traffic noise and the development of working memory and attention in primary school children, considering school-outdoor and school-indoor annual average noise levels and noise fluctuation characteristics, as well as home-outdoor noise exposure.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We followed up a population-based sample of 2,680 children aged 7 to 10 years from 38 schools in Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain) betw

Anthropogenic impacts, such as noise pollution from transportation networks, can serve as stressors to some wildlife species. For example, increased exposure to traffic noise has been found to alter baseline and stress-induced corticosterone levels, reduce body condition and reproductive success, and increase telomere attrition in free-living birds. However, it remains unknown if alterations in nestling phenotype are due to direct or indirect effects of noise exposure. For example, indirect (maternal) effects of noise may occur if altered baseline and stress-induced corticosterone in mothers r

BACKGROUND: There has been growing interest among exposure assessors, epidemiologists, and policymakers in the concept of "hot spots", or more broadly, the "spatial extent" of impacts from traffic-related air pollutants. This review attempts to quantitatively synthesize findings about the spatial extent under various circumstances.
METHODS: We include both the peer-reviewed literature and government reports, and focus on four significant air pollutants: carbon monoxide, benzene, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter (including both ultrafine particle counts and fine particle mass). From the

BACKGROUND: Independent of current socioeconomic status (SES), past maternal SES might influence asthma outcomes in children.
OBJECTIVE: We examined associations among the mother's SES in the first 10 years of her life (maternal childhood SES), increased cord blood IgE levels (upper 20% [1.37 IU/mL]), and repeated wheeze (≥ 2 episodes by age 2 years) in an urban pregnancy cohort (n = 510).
METHODS: Data on sociodemographics, discrimination, financial strain, community violence, interpersonal trauma, and other negative events were obtained prenatally. Prenatal household dust was assayed for c

BACKGROUND: Studies of the association between air pollution and asthma onset have mostly focused on urban and traffic-related air pollution. We investigated the associations between exposure to industrial emissions and childhood-onset asthma in a population-based birth cohort in Quebec, Canada, 2002-2011.
METHODS: The cohort was built from administrative health databases. We developed separately for PM2.5 and SO2 different metrics representing children's time-varying residential exposure to industrial emissions: 1) yearly number of tons of air pollutant emitted by industries located within 2

This study aimed to determine seasonal (summer vs. winter) and spatial distribution of the selected heavy elements (HEs) (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Pb) in soil samples collected from a typical Central European town, Novi Sad, Serbia. The highest Pb concentrations were observed in summer because of intensive ground-flushing, whereas Cu had its highest concentration in winter, which may be attributed to traffic emissions. Source characterization and spatial distribution were carried out using cluster analysis (CA), principal component analysis (PCA), variogram calculation and theoretical model

In the global COVID-19 epidemic, humans are faced with a new challenge. The concept of quarantine as a preventive measure has changed human activities in all aspects of life. This challenge has led to changes in the environment as well. The air quality index is one of the immediate concrete parameters. In this study, the actual potential of quarantine effects on the air quality index and related variables in Tehran, the capital of Iran, is assessed, where, first, the data on the pollutant reference concentration for all measuring stations in Tehran, from February 19 to April 19, from 2017 to 2

OBJECTIVE: Quantify the health impacts on morbidity of reduced car trips and increased public transport and cycling trips.
METHODS: A health impact assessment study of morbidity outcomes related to replacing car trips in Barcelona metropolitan (3,231,458 inhabitants). Through 8 different transport scenarios, the number of cases of disease or injuries related to physical activity, particulate matter air pollution <2.5 μm (PM2.5) and traffic incidents in travelers was estimated. We also estimate PM2.5 exposure and cases of disease in the general population.
RESULTS: A 40% reduction in long-dur

The set of measures to contain the diffusion of COVID-19 instituted by the European governments gave an unparalleled opportunity to improve our understanding of the transport and industrial sectors' contribution to urban air pollution. The purpose of this study was to assess the impacts of the lockdown measures on air quality and pollutant emissions in Valencia, Spain. For this reason, we determined if there was a significant difference in the concentration levels of different particulate matter (PM) sizes, PM10, PM2.5, and NOx, NO2, NO, and O3, between the period of restrictions in 2020 and t

BACKGROUND: In order to curb traffic-related air pollution and its impact on the physical environment, contemporary city commuters are encouraged to shift from private car use to active or public transport modes. However, personal exposures to particulate matter (PM), black carbon and noise during commuting may be substantial. Therefore, studies comparing exposures during recommended modes of transport versus car trips are needed.
METHODS: We measured personal exposure to various-sized particulates, soot, and noise during commuting by bicycle, bus and car in three European cities: Helsinki in

AIMS: The relevance of ultrafine particles (UFPs, particles <0.1 microm diameter), the smallest fraction of ambient particulate matter, on stroke morbidity has not been documented. We studied the effects of short-term changes in exposure to these particles on stroke, separately for ischaemic and haemorrhagic strokes, mild and severe strokes, and ischaemic strokes with (likely embolic) and without (likely thrombotic) atrial fibrillation (AF).
METHODS AND RESULTS: We used a time-stratified case-crossover design to study the association between short-term exposure to UFPs, particulate matter <10
