Long-term normalization of blood pressure in SHR and 1-kidney 1-clip rats by synthetic precursor of stable PAF analogue without systemic effects in normotensive rats.

This study characterized the actions of the newly synthesized PAF precursor 1-hexadecyl-2-alkylcarbamoyl-glycerol (HAG) on blood pressure (BP) in male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), SHR-stroke prone (SHRSP) and Wistar rats with 1-kidney 1-clip (1K1C) renovascular hypertension used as experimental models of human primary and secondary hypertension. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) in the tail artery and mean arterial pressure (MAP) in the abdominal aorta were measured by tail plethysmography and invasive pressure transducer, respectively. Intravenous treatment with 1mg/kg HAG in SHR result

Correlation of peripheral venous pressure and central venous pressure in kidney recipients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Previous studies in adults have demonstrated a clinically useful correlation between central venous pressure (CVP) and peripheral venous pressure (PVP). The current study prospectively compared CVP measurements from a central versus a peripheral catheter in kidney recipients during renal transplantation. METHODS: With ethics committee approval and informed consent, 30 consecutive kidney recipients were included in the study. We excluded patients who had significant valvular disease or clinically apparent left ventricular failure. For each of 30 patients, CVP and PVP

Intraoperative manometry--a useful tool in biliary surgery?

Intraoperative manometry was performed in 771 patients undergoing cholecystectomy with (n = 158) and without (n = 613) interventions on the common bile duct and papilla. The method measures the resting pressure (RP) and pressure increase (PI) after injection of 1 ml NaCl/s as well as the time (TR) used for return to the initial pressure, using a Statham transducer. All values are recorded and statistically processed by the two-tailed t test. All three manometric parameters (RP, PI and TR) were statistically different (p less than or equal to 0.0001) between patients with and without alteration

Analysis of Subcutaneous Anterior Transposition versus in-situ Decompression of Ulnar Nerve with Force Transducer in Cadaver Specimen.

AIM: To evaluate the changes in the pressure values of the ulnar nerve after in-situ decompression and anterior subcutaneous transposition of the ulnar nerve. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The ulnar nerve was released in the postcondylar groove. An ultrathin (100 lm) force transducer was embedded between the posterior of the ulnar nerve and the anterior of the medial epicondyle. The elbow joint was flexed from full extension position to maximum flexion and was measured to obtain the maximum stress at 0°, 45°, 90°, and 135° of flexion. Then, the ulnar nerve was transposed anterior subcutaneously. The

Long-term reliability of the telemetric Neurovent-P-tel sensor: in vivo case report.

Intracranial pressure (ICP) measurements are imperative for the proper diagnosis and treatment of several neurological disorders. Telemetric sensors have shown their utility for ICP estimation in short-term monitoring in humans. However, their long-term reliability is uncertain. The authors present the case of a 37-year-old woman diagnosed with benign intracranial hypertension and obesity. The patient underwent gastric bypass surgery for ICP control. In order to monitor ICP before and after bariatric surgery, a Neurovent-P-tel sensor was implanted in the left frontal lobe. After gastric bypass

New instrumental set for the assessment of the hand functionality.

Hand motor deficits have been widely investigated, and several devices have been proposed for the selective and accurate study of specific hand motor tasks. Most studies have focused on the four, long fingers. The thumb function, although extremely important for the performance of most daily activities involving the hand, has scarcely been documented. A set of general-purpose, instrumental measuring devices has been designed and constructed at the authors' laboratory to measure and monitor the force each finger exerts separately, under isometric conditions, during pressing tasks. More generall

A comparison of scaphoid-trapezium-trapezoid fusion and four-bone tendon weave for scapholunate dissociation.

The contact characteristics of the radiocarpal joint (area, pressure, and ratios of scapholunate area, pressure and force transmitted) were determined with the use of pressure-sensitive film in seven normal wrists after ligament sectioning to create scapholunate instability, with reconstruction involving a scaphoid-trapezium-trapezoid fusion, and with reconstruction involving a four-bone tendon weave procedure. The results demonstrated that the scaphoid-trapezium-trapezoid fusion significantly altered the contact characteristics of the wrist, transferring load, pressure, and area to the radios

The quantitative evaluation of the relationship between the forces applied to the palm and carpal tunnel pressure.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common entrapment neuropathy occurring in upper limbs. The etiology, however, has not been fully understood yet. Median nerve could be compressed by either increase of carpal tunnel pressure (CTP) or direct impingement when it is forced toward to carpal ligament especially in wrist flexion leading to CTS development. Thus, the increase of carpal tunnel pressure is considered an important role in CTS development. It has been identified that forces applied to the palm would affect the CTP. However, the quantitative relationship between palmar contact forc

Anterior tibial compartment pressures during intermittent sequential pneumatic compression therapy.

We studied the anterior tibial compartment pressures during the application of a JOBST sequential intermittent pneumatic compression device on 5 healthy human volunteers (10 legs). Intracompartmental pressures were measured using a slit catheter. The measurements of interstitial pressures were highest at maximal calf inflation, and pressures were increased for approximately 120 seconds during each cycle. Pressure measurements in the inflated pressure sleeve varied less than 10% with the measured anterior tibial compartment pressures during intermittent pneumatic compression therapy. This inter

Automated Vessel Segmentation in Dual Energy Computed Tomography Data of the Pelvis and Lower Extremities.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whether it is feasible to use sonography to monitor changes in the optic nerve sheath diameter in a porcine model. METHODS: A fiber-optic intracranial pressure transducer was surgically placed through the frontal sinus directly into the brain parenchyma of adult Yorkshire pigs (n = 5). A second bolt was placed on the contralateral side for intraparenchymal fluid infusion. Optic nerve sheath diameter measurements were acquired by each of 2 ultrasound operators around the leading edge of the nerve, 3 to 5 mm distal from the origin of the optic nerve. To induc

Enhanced tissue harmonic ultrasound with a stack-layer dual-frequency transducer.

Objective. Tissue harmonic imaging (THI) has been widely used to improve ultrasound imaging quality, and further enhancing its performance remains a research focus.Approach. In this work, we propose a dual-frequency mixed harmonic imaging (DF-MHI) method based on a stack-layer dual-frequency ultrasound transducer (SL-DFUT) to further enhance the harmonic imaging signal-to-noise ratio. This method utilizes the overlapping sound fields of the SL-DFUT to generate difference and sum frequency harmonics at lower voltages. The method not only improves the imaging quality of harmonic imaging but also

Sensory testing in patients with hemodialysis-associated carpal tunnel syndrome submitted to surgical decompression.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common compression neuropathy of the upper limb. Close to 5% of patients with chronic renal failure who need hemodialysis present CTS. Clinical history and physical examination remain the most adequate tools for diagnosis, and there is still controversy regarding the most reliable test to complement it. Evaluation of sensory thresholds using Pressure-Specified Sensory Device (PSSD) has become an important instrumental test. METHOD: This study aimed to determine the values of pressure sensory thresholds using the PSSD before and after treatm

Development and modulation of experimental right ventricular hypertrophy in rats.

Two models of right ventricular (RV) hypertrophy in rats have been created and characterized: chronic myocardial infarction and pulmonary artery stenosis. A Millar ultraminiature catheter pressure transducer designed specifically for right heart catheterization was used for the measurement of RV function in closed-chest, anesthetized rats. Four weeks after coronary artery ligation, left ventricular (LV) function was depressed as evidenced by the reduction of LV systolic pressure (LVSP), the maximal rate of rise in LV pressure (LV dp/dtmax), cardiac output, and by the elevation of LV end-diasto

Change in Carpal Tunnel Pressure With Dynamic Wrist Flexion/Extension and Radioulnar Deviation: A Cadaveric Study.

Carpal tunnel pressure (CTP) is affected by flexion/extension and radioulnar deviation of the wrist. The purpose of this study was to investigate the elevations in CTP as a function of dynamic wrist motion in cadaveric hands. A goniometer was attached on hand dorsal side of cadaveric hands (n = 5). A micro-tip catheter pressure transducer was placed inside the carpal tunnel. With a baseline pressure set around 30 mmHg, the wrist was dynamically and randomly moved in its flexion/extension and radioulnar workspace while position and CTP were simultaneously recorded. CTP as a function of flexion/

S-tapered flexible optical fiber sensor for wide-range pressure sensing and directional slip recognition.

Flexible optical tactile sensors hold great promise for wearable electronics and robotic perception; however, existing devices typically face a trade-off among wide sensing range, simple readout, and dynamic slip recognition. Here, we propose a single-element flexible optical fiber sensor based on an asymmetric 3D S-tapered polymer optical fiber embedded in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Leveraging geometry-dependent curvature modulation, normal pressure is transduced into optical intensity variations, while slip direction is intrinsically encoded into distinguishable temporal waveforms.
