Audiometric and vestibular outcomes following temporal bone fractures: a retrospective analysis of a major trauma center cohort in China.

BACKGROUND: Temporal bone fractures form a major skull-base injury subset, yet prognostic data-drawn chiefly from short-term Western cohorts-remain sparse. This study therefore investigated long-term audiometric and vestibular outcomes by otic-capsule integrity to refine recovery estimates and treatment efficacy. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 1,871 adults with traumatic temporal bone fractures treated at a Level I trauma center in China (2014-2023). Patients were stratified by otic capsule status: sparing (OCS, n = 1,617) vs. violating (OCV, n = 254). Primary outcomes

A 12-year retrospective analysis of non-operative management for paediatric duodenal hematomas caused by trauma at a single center.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric traumatic duodenal hematoma is a rare type of blunt abdominal injury for which treatment strategies are controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the application value of nonoperative management of paediatric duodenal hematoma caused by trauma. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients with duodenal hematoma with a confirmed history of abdominal trauma admitted to our hospital between January 2010 and December 2022. General patient information, including age, sex, cause of injury, clinical manifestations, and treatment outcomes, was recorded. RESULT

Epidemiology of Lateral Patellar Dislocation Including Bone Bruise Incidence: Five Years of Data from a Trauma Center.

OBJECTIVE: Systematic summary of the epidemiology of patellar dislocation is rare. This study aims to investigate sex-, age-, type-, injury causing events-, incidence of bone bruise and time from last injury (TFLI)-specific characteristics, and detail the epidemiological characteristics of patellar dislocation. METHOD: In this descriptive epidemiological study, a total of 743 patients who have a history of lateral patellar dislocation with either first-time patellar dislocation (FPD) or recurrent patellar dislocation (RPD) between August 2017 and June 2022 at our institution met the inclusion

Atlanto-occipital dislocation with concomitant severe traumatic brain injury: A retrospective study at a level 1 trauma center.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic atlanto-occipital dislocation (AOD) is a life-threatening injury. Although traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with increased mortality in AOD patients, a detailed individual analysis of these patients is lacking in the literature. METHODS: Patients ≥16 years old who were diagnosed of AOD with concomitant severe TBI from 2010 to 2020 were included in this retrospective study. We examined the epidemiology, injury mechanisms, associated injuries, and outcomes of these patients. RESULTS: Eight patients were included. Six patients died before any intervention could b

Pain Self-Management with Inhaled Methoxyflurane by Emergency Department Trauma Patients: A Prospective, Interventional, Single-Center Study.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to overcrowding in many emergency departments (EDs). The present single-center, prospective, interventional study (conducted at Bichat University Medical Center (Paris, France)) was designed to assess the impact of self-administered, inhaled, low-dose methoxyflurane on trauma pain in a pre-ED fast-track zone dedicated to the management of lower-acuity non-COVID-19 patients. In the first phase of the study, the control group consisted of patients with mild-to-moderate trauma pain, for whom the triage nurse initiated pain management (based

Predictors of Surgical Versus Medical Management of Eyes in the Setting of Orbital Fracture at an Academic Level I Trauma Center.

We present clinical and imaging predictors of ocular injuries that required medical management versus surgical intervention in cases of orbital fractures. From 2014 to 2020, a retrospective review of patients with orbital fractures who received ophthalmologic consultation and computed scan (CT) analysis at a level I trauma center was performed. Inclusion criteria were patients with confirmed orbital fracture on CT and ophthalmology consultation. Patient demographics, associated injuries, comorbidities, management, and outcomes were collected. Two hundred and one patients and 224 eyes (11.4% bi

Intramedullary Nailing of Intertrochanteric Femoral Fractures in a Level I Trauma Center in Finland: What Complications Can be Expected?

BACKGROUND: Intertrochanteric hip fractures are one of the most common fractures in older people, and the number is estimated to increase. These fractures are often treated with intramedullary nailing; however, various complications have been reported. It is important to identify the potential complications and investigate whether the choice of implant and patient-related factors are associated with the risk of complications to develop better strategies for preventing them. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) In the treatment of intertrochanteric fractures with intramedullary nailing, what are the risks

Patterns of maxillofacial trauma in helmet vs. non helmet wearing two wheeler drivers in a tertiary care center.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The frequency and patterns of maxillofacial fractures vary by country, based on demographic, socioeconomic, cultural and environmental factors. Wearing a helmet is an efficient form of head protection for two-wheeler drivers and is now required in the vast majority of countries. The aim of this study was to compare the patterns of maxillofacial trauma in patients who wore helmets and those who did not. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data were gathered from clinical records of patients presenting with maxillofacial trauma between January 2019 and February 2022. The inclusion crite

[Observations on the influence of trauma-centered psychotherapy with EMDR therapy on somatic comorbidities using the example of Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis].

BACKGROUND: Results of modern research show a relationship between emotional stress and the occurrence of autoimmune diseases as a comorbidity. The authors use EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to treat trauma disorders. They wondered whether and to what extent this treatment also affects autoimmune processes. METHOD: Parallel to the trauma-focused psychotherapy with EMDR, the thyroid hormone substitution dose was documented in patients with active Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis requiring substitution. Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis had already been diagnose

Tree Stand-Related Injuries in Nonadmitted and Admitted Patients at a Level 2 Trauma Center in Michigan: 2015-2019.

INTRODUCTION: Tree stand-related injuries (TSRI) are more common than firearm-related injuries in hunters. Most previous studies on the topic used trauma databases that only include admitted patients. This study characterizes injury patterns found in nonadmitted and admitted TSRI patients presenting to a level 2 Michigan trauma center. TSRI prevention interventions are also discussed. METHODS: Cases were obtained through a retrospective chart review of the Henry Ford Allegiance Health trauma registry and EPSi cost-accounting database from 2015 to 2019. Keywords searched included fall, hunter,

Remodeling of distal radius fractures in children: preliminary retrospective cost/analysis in level II pediatric trauma center.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Children displaced distal radius fractures (DRFs) are commonly treated by reduction. Yet, their excellent remodeling ability provides good clinical-radiographic outcomes even in case of non-anatomical reduction. The reduction under analgesia or sedation involves hospitalizations, greater risks, and higher hospital costs. The aim of this preliminary study is to demonstrate the accountability and conveniency of non-anatomical reduction. METHODS: The study involved all 0-8 years-old children who were affected by a closed overriding DRF from February 2017 to December 2018 and
