BACKGROUND: Anomalous pancreaticobiliary junction (a long common channel) is associated with choledochal cyst or biliary malignancy. We conducted a prospective study to assess the diagnostic value of endoscopic ultrasonography for anomalous pancreaticobiliary junction.

Differential diagnostic problems may occur in a patient with a cold, pale and swollen leg. Especially when the peripheral blood pressure is reduced, it is particularly difficult to distinguish cases caused by venous thrombosis from those caused by arterial embolism. Colour-Doppler ultra-sonography might be helpful for establishing the correct diagnosis. A case history is presented.

We performed serial cranial ultrasonography in four newborns affected by maple syrup urine disease. Symmetric increase of echogenicity of periventricular white matter, basal ganglia (mainly pallidi), and thalami was detected in the acute stage. The degree of ultrasonography abnormalities paralleled the clinical course of the disease.

The course of healing of gastric ulcers and their relapse were examined, based on observation of the cross-sections of gastric ulcers using endoscopic ultrasonography. This study concludes that EUS can predict ulcer healing and it is suggested that the strategy be planned based on the findings from EUS.

Congenital gallbladder duplication, an uncommon but potentially complicating malformation, is rarely diagnosed preoperatively. A case in which the diagnosis was achieved by real-time ultrasonography is presented and correlated with hepatobiliary scintigraphy. The efficacy of these diagnostic modalities is discussed, and the available literature is reviewed.

Over a period of one year, 75 patients with jaundice were evaluated by grey scale ultrasonography. Intravenous cholangiography was attempted in 26 instances (bilirubin value greater than 4.3 mg/100 ml) and was diagnostic in only four. Ultrasound, on the other hand, was diagnostic for surgical jaundice in 62 of the 75 cases (82%). Gastric glomus tumors are rare and challenging to diagnose preoperatively owing to their resemblance to other submucosal lesions. We herein report the case of a 35-year-old man with a 15 mm gastric submucosal tumor.
