Lipomas of the colon are uncommon but cause diagnostic difficulty when they are symptomatic. The clinical and pathological features of 17 cases of colonic lipomas diagnosed at the University Hospital of the West Indies between 1970 and 1999 are reported. Ten cases were symptomatic, two of these being diagnosed with adult intussusception. Six patients had incidental lipomas in bowel resected for other pathology while one lipoma was diagnosed on sigmoidoscopy. Increased awareness of these lesions will enhance pre-operative diagnostic accuracy.

OBJECTIVE: Esthesioneuroblastoma is rare and the best treatment has yet to be defined. The purpose of this study is to analyze the natural history, treatment, and patterns of failure of esthesioneuroblastoma treated at one institution.
METHODS: Between 1978 and 1998, 13 patients with esthesioneuroblastoma were identified using the University of Iowa Tumor Registry. All patients were staged according to Kadish criteria. Mean follow-up was 6.3 years. Six patients had 5 or more years of follow-up and four had follow-up exceeding 9.5 years. One patient was lost to follow-up at 36 months.

Neonatal screening is an essential program for early identification of congenital hypothyroidism. Between July 1991 and May 1998, 37, 262 infants born at Chulalongkorn Hospital were enrolled to the screening program. Blood TSH levels were determined on infants at > or = 48 hours after birth. In October 1997, an outbreak of meningococcal disease occurred at the University of Southampton. All six cases were first year students living in halls of residence. Microbiological characterization of case and carrier strains, case interviews, and a meningococcal carriage prevalence survey were used to investigate the outbreak. The prevalence of Cryptosporidiosis in 18 immunosuppressed diarrheic patients was evaluated by examination of fecal samples by direct staining (Modified Kinyoun and Giemsa), direct and indirect immunofluorescence methods. BACKGROUND/AIMS: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) has become a commonly performed procedure to provide nutritional support for chronically ill patients. The aim of this study was to review the safety and results of PEG in a teaching hospital.
METHODOLOGY: A retrospective review of 44 patients who underwent PEG procedure. The indication was long-term enteral feeding in patients who were unable to maintain adequate nutrition by mouth with an otherwise functioning gut. The most common primary diagnosis was cerebrovascular accident (17 patients). All patients were unable to swallow.

Although the operative mortality of pancreaticoduodenal resection has decreased recently, the operative morbidity resulting from a leaking pancreatic anastomosis remains high. We described our experience in 50 consecutive cases with a simple, secure end to side pancreaticojejunostomy. We used a paediatric nasogastric tube in the pancreatic remnant duct as a temporary external pancreatic drain. There were 29 men and 21 women ranging from 12 to 84 years with a median age of 61 years. Forty-two patients underwent a standard Whipple procedure and eight a pylorus preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy.
