Interactive AI annotation of medical images in a virtual reality environment.

PURPOSE: Artificial intelligence (AI) achieves high-quality annotations of radiological images, yet often lacks the robustness required in clinical practice. Interactive annotation starts with an AI-generated delineation, allowing radiologists to refine it with feedback, potentially improving precision and reliability. These techniques have been explored in two-dimensional desktop environments, but are not validated by radiologists or integrated with immersive visualization technologies. We used a Virtual Reality (VR) system to determine whether (1) the annotation quality improves when radiolo

Comparison of three-dimensional tooth movements in virtual setups using different software packages for clear aligner therapy.

BACKGROUND: With the advent of clear aligner therapy and their increasing popularity across the orthodontic field, many software packages have been introduced that implement the concept of virtual setups and consequently, the fabrication of in-house aligners. The objective of the present study was to evaluate and compare the differences in the resultant tooth movements when the same tooth movement values of virtual setups are implemented into four different software packages for clear aligner treatment, in patients with various degrees of dental crowding. METHODS: Forty-four stereolithography

The Impact of AI-Based Real-Time Gesture Generation and Immersion on the Perception of Others and Interaction Quality in Social XR.

This study explores how people interact in dyadic social eXtended Reality (XR), focusing on two main factors: the animation type of a conversation partner's avatar and how immersed the user feels in the virtual environment. Specifically, we investigate how 1) idle behavior, 2) AI-generated gestures, and 3) motion-captured movements from a confederate (a controlled partner in the study) influence the quality of conversation and how that partner is perceived. We examined these effects in both symmetric interactions (where both participants use VR headsets and controllers) and asymmetric interact

Towards 360 VR Sickness Mitigation: From Virtual Reality Eye-Tracking to Visual Communication.

Most 360 virtual reality (VR) contents have been developed without considering that users could be affected by VR sickness. Accordingly, users' viewing safety has been steadily highlighted as a critical problem in the VR market. In this study, we investigate a novel VR sickness mitigation framework based on human visual characteristics for the rendered VR content. First, we build a large-scale 360 VR content database termed VRSP360 (VR Sickness and Presence 360) dedicated to the analysis of VR sickness and thoroughly conduct eye-tracking experiments to measure human perception. In the experime

Virtual reality simulation of robotic transsphenoidal brain tumor resection: Evaluating dynamic motion scaling in a master-slave system.

BACKGROUND: Integrating simulators with robotic surgical procedures could assist in designing and testing of novel robotic control algorithms and further enhance patient-specific pre-operative planning and training for robotic surgeries. METHODS: A virtual reality simulator, developed to perform the transsphenoidal resection of pituitary gland tumours, tested the usability of robotic interfaces and control algorithms. It used position-based dynamics to allow soft-tissue deformation and resection with haptic feedback; dynamic motion scaling control was also incorporated into the simulator. RE

[Correction of Intraarticular Malunion of the Distal Radius Based on a Computer-Assisted Virtual Planning].

BACKGROUND: Computer-assisted 3D-virtual planning of extraarticular corrective procedures at the distal radius and transfer of the virtually planned procedure to the radius in vivo has been recently described. In contrast to this analogue studies on intraarticular corrective procedures are still lacking. With regard to the difficulties of the technique and the potential risks a similar technique would be valuable, that overcomes the problems of the limited access and the difficulties of reposition and fixation. This study presents a technique for intraarticular corrective procedures at the dis

Immunoinformatics as a Tool for New Antifungal Vaccines.

Immunoinformatics aids in screening for vaccine candidates, which can be experimentally tested for their efficacy. This chapter describes methods to use immunoinformatics to screen fungal vaccines candidates. Surface-localized molecules called adhesins could elicit immune response and serve as efficient vaccine candidates. The screening process is patterned on two steps, namely, a First Layer screen mostly used for value addition and prioritization based on characteristics of known antigens and a Second Layer highly focussed on core immunoinformatics analysis involving the binding and interact

Augmented reality and cone beam CT guidance for transoral robotic surgery.

In transoral robotic surgery preoperative image data do not reflect large deformations of the operative workspace from perioperative setup. To address this challenge, in this study we explore image guidance with cone beam computed tomographic angiography to guide the dissection of critical vascular landmarks and resection of base-of-tongue neoplasms with adequate margins for transoral robotic surgery. We identify critical vascular landmarks from perioperative c-arm imaging to augment the stereoscopic view of a da Vinci si robot in addition to incorporating visual feedback from relative tool po

Development and evaluation of an instrumented linkage system for total knee surgery.

The principles and application of total knee surgery using optical tracking have been well demonstrated, but electromagnetic tracking may offer further advantages. We asked whether an instrumented linkage that attaches directly to the bone can maintain the accuracy of the optical and electromagnetic systems but be quicker, more convenient, and less expensive to use. Initial testing using a table-mounted digitizer to navigate a drill guide for placing pins to mount a cutting guide demonstrated the feasibility in terms of access and availability. A first version (called the Mark 1) instrumented

Complete and rapid switch from light microscopy to virtual microscopy for teaching medical histology.

During the interim between the 2003 and 2004 academic years, the cell and tissue biology and integrated medical neuroscience courses at the Medical College of Wisconsin made a complete and rapid switch from light microscopy- to virtual microscopy-based histology laboratories. This switch was prompted by the difficulties in maintaining and the cost of replacing the college's microscopes and microscope slides, and primarily by the desire to promote and streamline learning for our large classes (n > 200) of first-year medical students. A group of students who used the virtual microscope, another

Semantically-enabled sensor plug & play for the sensor web.

Environmental sensors have continuously improved by becoming smaller, cheaper, and more intelligent over the past years. As consequence of these technological advancements, sensors are increasingly deployed to monitor our environment. The large variety of available sensor types with often incompatible protocols complicates the integration of sensors into observing systems. The standardized Web service interfaces and data encodings defined within OGC's Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) framework make sensors available over the Web and hide the heterogeneous sensor protocols from applications. So far,

An immersive simulation system for provoking and analyzing cataplexy.

Cataplexy, a sudden loss of voluntary muscle control, is one of the hallmark symptoms of narcolepsy, a sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness. Cataplexy is usually triggered by strong, spontaneous emotions, such as laughter, surprise, fear or anger, and is more common in times of stress. The Sleep Disorders Unit and the Biomedical Imaging Resource at Mayo Clinic are developing interactive display technology for reliably inducing cataplexy during clinical monitoring. The use of immersive displays may help bypass patient defenses, and game-like "unreality" allows introducti

Virtual mounting of a semi-adjustable articulator integrating cone beam computed tomography and intraoral and facial scans for interdisciplinary planning.

A standardized digital protocol for the virtual mounting of a semi-adjustable articulator by integrating cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and intraoral and facial scans is described. The datasets were aligned in a dental design software program using craniofacial reference points and oriented to the Frankfort horizontal plane for accurate spatial positioning. Mandibular movements were simulated by adjusting the condylar inclination and Bennett angles to visualize functional occlusal contacts. This workflow eliminated physical facebow transfers, reduced operator variability, and enhanced in

Analysis on Mitigation of Visually Induced Motion Sickness by Applying Dynamical Blurring on a User's Retina.

Visually induced motion sickness (MS) experienced in a 3D immersive virtual environment (VE) limits the widespread use of virtual reality (VR). This paper studies the effects of a saliency detection-based approach on the reduction of MS when the display on a user's retina is dynamic blurred. In the experiment, forty participants were exposed to a VR experience under a control condition without applying dynamic blurring, and an experimental condition applying dynamic blurring. The experimental results show that the participants under the experimental condition report a statistically significant
