Interventions to increase COVID-19 vaccine uptake: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Vaccines are effective in preventing severe COVID-19, a disease for which few treatments are available and which can lead to disability or death. Widespread vaccination against COVID-19 may help protect those not yet able to get vaccinated. In addition, new and vaccine-resistant mutations of SARS-CoV-2 may be less likely to develop if the spread of COVID-19 is limited. Different vaccines are now widely available in many settings. However, vaccine hesitancy is a serious threat to the goal of nationwide vaccination in many countries and poses a substantial threat to population health

SARS-CoV-2, Tdap, and influenza vaccination during pregnancy from 2019 to 2022 in Ontario, Canada: a population-based retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Hesitancy about vaccination during pregnancy posed challenges to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination efforts. We aimed to examine rates of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination among Ontario residents who gave birth in early 2022, and to compare rates of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine uptake with rates of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) and influenza vaccination during pregnancy in 2019, 2021, and 2022. METHODS: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study to describe vaccination rates among pregnant and comparable nonpregnant populations in Ontario using linked administrative data. Provincially

COVID-19 vaccination among people with HIV in Uganda: lessons from a high-risk group with high vaccine uptake for the next pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Despite the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine, vaccination rates vary across settings and populations, especially among people living with HIV (PLHIV). We assessed factors associated with COVID-19 vaccination among PLHIV in Mbarara, Uganda. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study consisting of PLHIV ≥18 years old on antiretroviral therapy (ART). We collected data on COVID-19 vaccine uptake and associated factors beginning in December 2021, 9 months after the vaccine became available in Uganda. Reasons for vaccine acceptance and

COVID-19 and Pregnancy.

Pregnancy seems to be a risk factor for severe disease with COVID-19. Although SARS-CoV-2 intrauterine transmission seems to be rare, most studies show COVID-19 during pregnancy increases the risk for pregnancy complications, with higher risk among those with severe disease compared with those mildly affected. Studies suggest that COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy is safe and effective. Antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 have been found in umbilical cord blood and breast milk following maternal vaccination, which might provide protection to the infant. However, vaccination rates during pregnancy rem

Facial Angioedema after the first dose of Covishield (adenovirus-vectored severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 vaccine): follow-up after the second and third booster doses.

Mass vaccination campaigns are essential to control the ongoing novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov-2) pandemic. The Covishield vaccine consists of the replication-deficient simian adenovirus vector ChAdOx1, which contains the full-length structural spike protein of SARS-CoV-2. Occasionally, it can lead to cutaneous reactions that contribute to fear of vaccination, hesitancy, and incomplete vaccination schedules. We report a case of facial angioedema following the first dose of Covishield in a 63-year-old woman with no previous history of allergies or hypersensitivi

Compulsory Vaccination and the Turkish Constitutional Court.

As vaccine hesitancy is on the rise around the world, apex courts in some countries have confronted the difficult task of striking a fair balance between individual rights and the common good. Against this background, the article discusses the compulsory vaccination cases heard by the Turkish Constitutional Court (TCC). The TCC's case law illustrates that any interference with bodily integrity must first comply with the principle of lawfulness and its rulings addressed an important shortage of the current Turkish compulsory childhood vaccination policy. The article suggests that the principle

Mandatory vaccination of infants in France: Is that the way forward?

In this opinion paper, the authors argue that the extension of mandatory immunization of infants up to two years of age from three diseases (diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis) to 11 diseases, introduced in France in January 2018, is not a sustainable response to the challenge of controlling vaccine-preventable diseases. In France in 2017, infant immunization coverage (IC) rates were sufficiently high or increasing (hepatitis B), except for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and meningococcus C disease. Even if vaccination obligation makes it possible to achieve the MMR IC objectives among infan

Impact of BCG Vaccination Disruptions During the COVID-19 Pandemic on Tuberculosis Incidence in Infants: A Nationwide Study in Brazil.

Pandemic-related disruptions led to lower Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine coverage in Brazil. This study highlights a link between reduced vaccinations and increased tuberculosis pulmonary and extrapulmonary cases in infants. Addressing vaccine hesitancy and ensuring healthcare stability is vital for mitigating impacts.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is infrequent among recipients of the BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.

Vaccines are the most effective strategy to mitigate the global impact of COVID-19. However, vaccine hesitancy is common, particularly among minorities. Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is the most common autoimmune illness of the peripheral nervous system, occurring at an incidence of 1.1/100,000 worldwide. A causal link between mRNA vaccines and GBS has not been previously evaluated. We analyzed a cohort of 3,890,250 Hispanic/Latinx recipients of the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine (613,780 of whom had already received both doses) for incident GBS occurring within 30 days from vaccine administration. A Parent-Facing Decision Aid About Childhood Vaccination: Co-development Study Adapting a Shared Decision-Making Approach to Support Evidence-Guided Decision-Making.

BACKGROUND: Childhood vaccination rates are declining, and more parents are becoming hesitant about vaccinating their children. Higher levels of vaccine hesitancy occur among parents with lower levels of educational attainment, who are also likely to have lower levels of health literacy. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop a web-based decision aid, considered a shared decision-making (SDM) approach, to inform and support Dutch parents in their decision-making about routine childhood vaccination, prioritizing the needs of hesitant parents and those with lower health literacy. We adapted the traditi

HPV vaccination intention among guardians of male junior high school students in Chongqing, China.

BACKGROUND: The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is essential for preventing sexually transmitted infections and HPV-related cancers in both men and women. Vaccinating boys directly protects them and contributes to herd immunity. It also indirectly protects their future partners. As parents' intentions strongly influence adolescents' HPV vaccination, this study aimed to investigate the factors that influence their vaccination intentions for sons. The results of this study will provide a theoretical basis and practical recommendations for improving parental acceptance of HPV vaccination. MET

Beyond Influenza Vaccination: Expanding Infrastructure for Hospital-based Pediatric COVID-19 Vaccine Delivery.

Controlling the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), will rely on vaccination at increasing rates and in an equitable manner. The main reasons for under-vaccination are varied among different segments of the population and include vaccine hesitancy and lack of access. While vaccine hesitancy is complicated and requires long-term solutions, access can be enhanced through evidence-based delivery strategies that augment conventional approaches. Hospital-based COVID-19 vaccination programs hold particular

Using classification and regression tree analysis to explore parental influenza vaccine decisions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Influenza poses a public health threat for children and adults. The CDC recommends annual influenza vaccination for children <18 years, yet vaccine uptake remains low for children (57.9%) and adults (37.1%). Given that parental decision-making is key in childhood vaccine uptake, there is a critical need to understand vaccine hesitancy among parents who decide not to vaccinate their children. This study aims to explore predictors of children's influenza vaccine status given parental vaccination status and examine the factors that contribute to concordance or discordan

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Vaccine Boosters: An Influenza Vaccine Perspective.

Changes to severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccine guidance since their initial authorization may lead to confusion and hesitancy. Suggested recommendations for an annual SARS-CoV-2 vaccine naturally draw comparisons with the influenza vaccine program. Considering viral and vaccine characteristics between these pathogens provides an important perspective that can help increase vaccine confidence with SARS-CoV-2 vaccines.

Focus on High School: Factors Associated with Creating Harmony between the Educational Transition and Adolescents' Well-Being.

The transition from online to on-site education was difficult due to a lack of standardized school guidance for school reopening. Even though schools have reopened, uncertainty about the COVID-19 situation and the capacity of the school to maintain safe school operations to mitigate risks may increase hesitancy among students and parents to participate in on-site studying. Rapid-response surveys of students and parents can provide information to stakeholders on how learning and well-being can best be supported during the educational transition in each context. The aim of this study was to expl

Addressing MMR Vaccine Resistance in Minnesota's Somali Community.

Over the past 10 years, Minnesota clinicians have noticed increased resistance to MMR vaccination among Somali Minnesotans. Misinformation about a discredited study asserting a link between the MMR vaccine and autism has permeated this community as parents have increasingly become concerned about the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder among their children. As a result, MMR vaccination rates among U.S.-born children of Somali descent are declining. This article reports findings from an investigation by the Minnesota Department of Health, which was undertaken to better understand vaccine hes
