OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the BD SurePath™ liquid-based Papanicolaou test for assessing the cytology of intrauterine endometrial samples according to newly devised cytological diagnostic criteria and a novel descriptive reporting format.

There is an increasing trend towards self-collection of samples for sexually transmitted infection screening in lieu of genital examination and clinician-obtained urethral and cervical swabs. This article examines the advantages and disadvantages of this trend, and the effect on nursing practice particularly within integrated sexual health (ISH) services, which provide genito-urinary medicine (GUM) and contraceptive services. This article might also be of interest to nurses working within separate GUM and contraceptive services, especially those that are preparing to become ISH services.

External genital warts (EGWs) are a common sexually transmitted infection caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). OBJECTIVE: To clarify the performance of liquid-based cytology (LBC) and conventional methods of preparing cervical specimens for cytological screening.
STUDY DESIGN: We studied 236,511 patients who participated in a population-based cervical cancer screening program conducted in the Niigata prefecture between 2005 and 2008. The percentage of unsatisfactory specimens and the disease detection rate were compared between specimens prepared by LBC and conventional methods.

AIM: Our aim was to summarize our and foreign experience in screening of cervical cancer, using conventional PAP smear and liquid-based cytology-LBC.

Speculum insertion can be associated with considerable discomfort during routine pelvic examination. Physiologically, vaginal entry requires lubrication. However, traditional teaching recommends, if anything, warm water only for lubrication, because lubricants are believed to interfere with Pap and infection tests. There is level I evidence that modest lubrication of the external surface of the speculum does not impair cytologic and infectious evaluation of the cervix. This should be reflected in contemporary teaching and guidelines.

Pelvic actinomycosis is an extremely rare disease that can occur in women with a long duration of intrauterine device (IUD) use. Ureaplasma urealyticum in aborted tissue and cervical mucus were examined in 40 women with spontaneous abortion (test group), 20 women of induced abortion and 20 healthy pregnant women (control group). The results showed that the positive isolation rate of ureaplasma urealyticum was significantly higher in the test group than that in the control group (55.0% vs 10.0%). The detection rate of ureaplasma urealyticum increased along with the number of spontaneous abortion. It indicated that ureaplasma urealyticum might be a cause of unexplained spontaneous abortion.

We present four cases of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection detected by cervical cytology of asymptomatic young women. One patient who had undergone bone marrow transplantation was immunosuppressed, but no factors predisposing to CMV infection were identified in the other three patients. A cervical biopsy specimen from a fifth patient, who was also asymptomatic, demonstrated the locus of CMV infection to be in endocervical gland cells.
