Early Intervention for Children With Cleft Palate: First Report on the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence at Age Four.

In recent years, the necessity of early intervention in speech therapy for children with cleft palate has become widely recognized. To achieve more effective treatment outcomes through comprehensive early intervention, we launched an Early Intervention Program (EI Program) in 2010 at the Department of Speech and Orofacial Function Development, Aichi Gakuin University Dental Hospital. As part of a series of studies to evaluate the effectiveness of the EI Program, the present study aimed to examine the relationship between participation in the EI Program and cognitive development in children wit

Sex differences in Parkinson disease-associated episodic memory and processing speed deficits.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to address a gap in the data on cognitive sex differences in persons living with Parkinson disease (PD). There is some evidence that cognitive dysfunction is more severe in male PD, however data on episodic memory and processing speed is incomplete. METHODS: One hundred and sixty-seven individuals with a diagnosis of PD were included in this study. Fifty-six of those individuals identified as female. The California Verbal Learning Test 1st edition and the Wechsler Memory Scale 3rd edition were used to evaluate verbal and visuospatial episodic memory and the Wechsle…

Distinct neuroanatomical correlates of interference-related verbal episodic memory test in healthy older adults.

Verbal learning test can include a trial of interference process that intrude initial learning and impose additional cognitive stress. However, it has been unclear whether the multiple memory processes underly different brain structural bases. We measured performances of word retrieval that represents distinct memory processes (initial learning, interference, and retention) and regional gray matter morphology from 230 cognitively unimpaired older adults. We identified three distinct multivariate pattern modes using canonical correlation analysis that map correspondence between memory and brain…

Using Coding to Improve Executive Functioning in Children with Sickle Cell Disease: A Multiple-Baseline Single-Case Study.

Executive function (EF) impairments are common in children with intellectual and developmental disabilities and have a significant impact on learning and daily life. Cognitive training programs aimed at strengthening EFs may show limited feasibility and generalization. However, recent studies suggest that ecological, curriculum-embedded problem-solving activities may be more promising. This multiple-baseline single-case study tested the feasibility and efficacy of a short computational thinking and coding intervention based on problem-solving for children with sickle cell disease, a hemoglobin

Long-lasting improvement of memory after targeted cognitive remediation in temporal epilepsy: A randomized control study.

BACKGROUND: Memory deficits are a major burden in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), contributing to the impaired quality of life of patients. Short- and long-term efficacy of memory remediation in TLE is still debated. The aim of our study was to assess the short- and long-term efficacy of a cognitive remediation program, COMETE (COgnitive Rehabilitation of MEmory in Temporal Epilepsy), targeting specifically episodic memory in patients with TLE. METHODS: In this prospective randomized single-blinded trial, patients from different French epilepsy centers were randomly assigned in a 2:4 ratio, via

Impaired communication ability in SOX11 syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Speech and language skills are important for social interaction and learning. This study characterised the communication abilities of verbal individuals with SOX11 syndrome using a standardised parent/carer questionnaire, the Children's Communication Checklist (CCC-2). METHOD: Thirteen parent/carers of verbal individuals (aged 5-19 years) diagnosed with SOX11 syndrome completed the CCC-2. In order to contextualise findings, responses were compared to norms and to data from Noonan syndrome, a relatively well-known genetic diagnosis associated with communication impairment. RESULTS

Augmentation of working memory training by transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS).

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) can modulate working memory (WM) performance. However, evidence regarding the enhancement of WM training, its sustainability and transferability is ambiguous. Since WM functioning appears to be lateralized in respect to stimulus characteristics, this study examined the difference between task-congruent (spatial-right, verbal-left), task-incongruent (spatial-left, verbal-right) and sham tDCS in regards to the efficacy of WM training. In a randomized, sham-controlled experiment, 71 healthy adults trained

Emotional and pain-related factors in neuropsychological assessment following mild traumatic brain injury.

A critical issue in the field of clinical neuropsychology is the idea that emotional or pain-related factors may compromise the validity of neuropsychological assessment. In this study, 53 individuals suffering from mild traumatic brain injury related to motor vehicle accident injury completed commonly used measures of emotional and pain-related functioning. A battery of commonly used neuropsychological tests, assessing attention, learning and memory, language, visuospatial and visuomotor functions, speeded processing, fine-motor skill, and symptom validity, was administered concurrently. A model-based study of learning and memory following transient global amnesia attacks.

Verbal learning and forgetting were studied in patients one month after an episode of Transient Global Amnesia and in normal control subjects by means of a two-stage stochastic model, which allows independent measurements of encoding, storage and forgetting. We preliminarily ascertained both the necessity and the sufficiency of the model to account for several performance scores of the two experimental groups, and then compared the learning and forgetting functions between groups. In spite of the analytical power of the statistical method adopted. Transient Global Amnesia was not found to enta…

Speech intelligibility and childhood verbal apraxia in children with Down syndrome.

Many children with Down syndrome have difficulty with speech intelligibility. The present study used a parent survey to learn more about a specific factor that affects speech intelligibility, i.e. childhood verbal apraxia. One of the factors that affects speech intelligibility for children with Down syndrome is difficulty with voluntarily programming, combining, organising, and sequencing the movements necessary for speech. Historically, this difficulty, childhood verbal apraxia, has not been identified or treated in children with Down syndrome but recent research has documented that symptoms

Repeated presentation of a word list in a consistent order increases differences in total words recalled between those with and without Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) are known to have difficulty utilizing semantic strategy to remember items from a list, such as during word list recall tasks. However, it is unclear if presenting words in the same order as compared to shuffling across trials of a list-learning test confers an advantage in terms of word recall in individuals with AD. METHOD: To address this issue, we leveraged data from 10,504 participants over five studies across four AD Research Centers that administered the Consortium to Establish a Registry for AD Word List Memory Test in either a stan

Brain volumes as predictors of tDCS effects in primary progressive aphasia.

The current study aims to determine the brain areas critical for response to anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in PPA. Anodal tDCS and sham were administered over the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), combined with written naming/spelling therapy. Thirty people with PPA were included in this study, and assessed immediately, 2 weeks, and 2 months post-therapy. We identified anatomical areas whose volumes significantly predicted the additional tDCS effects. For trained words, the volumes of the left Angular Gyrus and left Posterior Cingulate Cortex predicted the additional t
