Even though few technological advancements have occurred in Orthodontics recently, the search for more efficient treatments continues. This paper analyses how to accelerate and improve one of the most arduous phases of orthodontic treatment, i.e., correction of the curve of Spee. The leveling of a deep curve of Spee can happen simultaneously with the alignment phase through a method called Early Vertical Correction (EVC). This technique uses two cantilevers affixed to the initial flexible archwire. This paper describes the force system produced by EVC and how to control its side effects. The E

BACKGROUND: Management of Class III malocclusion is one of the most challenging treatments in orthodontics, and several methods have been advocated for treatment of this condition. A new treatment protocol involves the use of an alternating rapid maxillary expansion and constriction (Alt-RAMEC) protocol, in conjunction with full-time Class III elastic wear and coupled with the use of temporary anchorage devices (TADs). The aim of this study was to evaluate the dento-skeletal and profile soft tissue effects of this novel protocol in growing participants with retrognathic maxilla.
METHODS: Four

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this investigation was to study the relationship between third molar agenesis-including the number of ageneses-and craniofacial structure growth.
METHODS: We reviewed 305 clinical histories of patients treated at the Orthodontics Unit of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Valencia in Spain. This included radiographic records of optimal quality. Of these, 40 patients who had agenesis of at least 1 third molar were included in the study group. A control group was formed with another 40 patients with all 4 third molars present. For both groups, a

INTRODUCTION: It is widely accepted that there is a relationship between the cranial base and the development of the nasomaxillary complex (NMC). The objective of the present study was to investigate the morphological relationship between these two anatomical units in skulls that have intentionally been subjected to one of two types of artificial deformity of the cranial vault [artificially deformed skulls (ADS)].
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A geometric morphometry study was performed on lateral cephalometric X-rays of three groups of crania: 32 with anteroposterior (AP) deformity, 17 with circumfe

AIM: to evaluate the effects of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in a group of OSAS preschool children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Lateral cephalograms of 15 OSAS children (8 boys and 7 girls, age mean ± SD: 5.94 ± 1.64 years) were analysed at the start of treatment with RME (T0). All subjects were revaluated after a mean period of 1.57 ± 0.58 years (T1). At this time the sample was divided into 2 groups according to the change in the respiratory disturbance index (RDI): an improved group (I: 8 subjects) and a stationary/worsened group (SW: 7 subjects). Differences between I and SW children with r

The aims of this study were (1) to establish standards for Arnett soft tissue cephalometric analysis of Anatolian Turkish young adults and (2) to identify possible gender differences between males and females. After analysing the cephalometric radiographs of 350 individuals, 133 subjects (67 males, mean age 22.6 +/- 2.2 years, and 66 females, mean age 22.1 +/- 2.6 years) with normal antero-posterior and vertical skeletal relationships were selected. The true vertical line was established. The landmarks were marked and soft tissue facial analysis was performed. For statistical evaluation, an in

The objectives of this study were to investigate if a relationship exists between dental arch width and the vertical facial pattern determined by the steepness of the mandibular plane, and to examine the differences in dental arch widths between male and female untreated adults. Lateral cephalograms and dental casts were obtained from 185 untreated Caucasians (92 males, 93 females) between 18 and 68 years of age with no crossbite, minimal crowding, and spacing. The angle of the mandibular plane (MP) to the anterior cranial base (SN) was measured on cephalograms of each patient. Dental casts we

To determine whether tooth shape and position are constant within tooth types, dental casts of 68 Indians (age range, 10-32 years; mean, 18.72 years) were analyzed. The casts were selected from a larger sample and met the following criteria: Class I molar and canine relationships; overjet and overbite within normal limits; well-related vertical, transverse, and anteroposterior relationships with pleasing profiles and well-aligned arches; and no supernumerary teeth or large restorations. None of the subjects had received orthodontic treatment, and all were in good health and exhibited normal gr

Dentoskeletal morphology was assessed in 191 untreated and unselected children with a hyperdivergent (high-angle) mandibular plane (ML/NSL > or =40 degrees) by analyzing lateral roentgenographic cephalograms. The subjects were divided into mixed dentition and permanent dentition groups, and further divided into subgroups based on the amount of overbite (OB) as a measure of dentoalveolar compensation of jaw base hyperdivergency: OB < 0 mm (openbite) = insufficient/no compensation; OB 0 to 4 mm (normal overbite) = acceptable compensation; OB > 4 mm (deepbite) = overcompensation. Openbite was obs

Palatal expansion in adults has traditionally been performed on a very limited basis. The expansion has been thought to be limited in scope and stability and to be associated with unacceptable complications. Instead, surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SA-RME) has been advocated. Five adults with transverse arch deficiency are presented to illustrate the feasibility of nonsurgical expansion using the Haas appliance. Transmolar expansions of 3.9 to 7.5 mm, sufficient to correct the malocclusions, were achieved. Limiting the rate of appliance activation is thought to be important to a

Craniofacial morphology was compared in 10 patients with unilateral cleft lip and alveolus (UCLA), 33 with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP), and 14 patients with isolated cleft palate (CP). Serial lateral and posteroanterior cephalograms, obtained just before lip repair at 4 months or palatoplasty at 2 years, and at 4 and 8 years of age, were analyzed through comparisons with the means and growth increments of craniofacial dimensions. Facial forms at 8 years of age were compared with those of 33 noncleft subjects. Wider upper facial width before lip repair in the UCLP patients d

Three-dimensional surface reconstruction imaging from CT scans was used to study the deformity of the mandible in six patients with mandibular asymmetry. High-resolution axial CT scans of the mandible were obtained using Somatom-DR3 (Siemens). COSMOZONE-2SA (Nikon) with PC-9801VX21 (NEC) was used to reconstruct the three-dimensional images. The six patients were divided into two groups. One group was classified as unilateral hybrid forms and the other group was classified hemimandibular elongation on the diagnostic criteria of Obwegeser and Makek (1986). In the three-dimensional surface recons
