Wistar rats were for 2 weeks exposed to vibrations of 18 Hz (acceleration of 2.3 G applied for 5.8 hrs a day for as long as 58 hrs) and 30 Hz (acceleration of 9.6 G applied for 5.1 hrs a day for as long as 56 hrs). The weight gain of experimental animals was less than that of control rats. Static endurance measured in terms of the time, during which the rats stayed on the vertical pole, decreased in the controls as their weight grew. Static endurance of the experimental rats remained essentially unchanged in spite of their growth. This may be associated with the stimulating effect of vibration

We have previously shown by chronic implantation of round window electrodes, that after the experimental induction of endolymphatic hydrops by surgical blockade of the endolymphatic canal, in the guinea pig, there is a low/mid-frequency fluctuant hearing loss, followed by a very high frequency loss and after a few months the audiogram is flat. This evolution reproduces exactly that observed in Meniere's patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the evolution of one aspect of vestibular function in parallel with audiogram changes. The nystagmic responses in the dark were tested every m

The authors described the results of distant field registration of evoked responses from the vestibular part of acoustic nerve. The investigations were carried out as a preliminary pilot study and were successful in obtaining the repeatable responses in guinea pigs. The detailed informations about the stimulation, reception and average technique equipment were enumerated. The variant proposition of the extraction of side motor disturbances was done.

Coriolis, cross-coupled angular acceleration stimulation readily induces motion sickness under terrestrial conditions. Nevertheless, the Skylab astronauts, when tested with such stimulation in-flight, were insusceptible even though each had been susceptible pre-flight. It is unclear whether this decreased susceptibility was the consequence of in-flight adaptation or in part the result of immediate changes in sensory-motor and vestibulo-motor function that occur during exposure to microgravity conditions. To evaluate this issue, we have tested individuals both in the high and low force phases o

The otologic surgeon must have a clear understanding of the anatomy of the seventh and eighth cranial nerves from the labyrinth to the brain stem, as seen from the postauricular approach. The surgical anatomy of the seventh and eighth cranial nerves was studied in 64 transcochlear eighth-nerve sections and 33 retrolabyrinthine vestibular neurectomies. Analysis indicates the nerves rotate 90 degrees in their course from the ear to the brain. The key relationship is that the cochlear nerve is always the most inferior, rotating from anterior (medial) near the labyrinth to posterior (lateral) near

Meniere's disease (idiopathic endolymphatic hydrops) was studied in human temporal bone histology sections. Measurements were made of the area, length, width, angle, position, and external aperture of the vestibular aqueduct in 27 temporal bones of individuals with this disease. These measurements were compared with measurements of the same parameters in 88 normal temporal bones. It was found that small vestibular aqueducts were more often observed in the temporal bones of patients with Meniere's disease than in temporal bones from individuals without this disorder. The difference in size of t

The development of motion sickness appears intimately related to the visual system. The Sensory Rearrangement Theory states that situations which promote motion sickness are characterized by a condition in which the motion signals transmitted by the eyes, vestibular system, and the nonvestibular proprioceptors are at variance as to what was expected previously. The evolutionary significance of motion sickness rests in its linkage to an early warning system to avoid poisoning. Vision is capable of aiding in the development of suppression of motion sickness. Therapy of motion sickness includes p

Two experiments were performed to evaluate the influence of vision on susceptibility to motion sickness during exposure to constant patterns of vestibular stimulation. The motion profile involved accelerating subjects at 20 degrees/s2 to 300 degrees/s, maintaining them at that constant velocity for 30 s, and decelerating them to a rapid stop in about 1.5 s. The number of stops tolerated by a subject before reaching the motion sickness endpoint served as his score. In Experiment 1, subjects were tested twice with their eyes open and twice with their eyes blindfolded. They tolerated fewer sudden

An ususual complication after stapedectomy for otosclerosis is reported. After two vain attempts elsewhere, the tympanic cavity was opened for the third time. Since the incus was missing, a malleovestibuloplasty was undertaken, using the Schuknecht wire prosthesis. Hearing was very good. One day after the operation, a facial paralysis developed, and increased over the following days. After 18 days, the nerve was found to be oedematous and swollen above the fenestra ovale upto the level of the promontory and had forced the prosthesis out of the fenestra ovale. Six weeks later, nerve function wa
