Reye's syndrome is a rare disorder appearing almost always in childhood. It is characterized by acute encephalopathy and fatty degeneration of the viscera. The mortality is high and many survivors have neurologic sequelae. A viral illness, particularly varicella or influenza B, usually precedes the syndrome. It has been associated with the use of aspirin during such infections. The number of cases has declined in countries where there has been a public education campaign and aspirin products have been withdrawn from sale. It is suggested that the same campaign is initiated in Denmark.

Infantile myofibromatosis is a rare mesenchymal disorder of infancy characterized by the formation of tumors in the skin, muscle, viscera, bone and subcutaneous tissue. The etiology of the disorder is unknown. We describe here a newborn with multiple infantile myofibromatosis, peritonitis and intestinal perforation. Six cases of proven herpes simplex infection in newborn babies are reported. Different clinical forms are observed: three babies with multisystem disease that attacked viscera and other three with central nervous system localisation. All six mothers have negative history for being carrier of herpes simplex virus. The babies are treated with Herpesbulin, Pandavir and Zovirax. One of them died with meningoencephalitis. The outcome at the age of three months after birth of the other 5 babies is: 2 babies are healthy, three developed late sequelae.

We present a rare case of left preureteral vena cava associated with partial situs inversus. A 68-year-old woman was referred to our clinic for further study of left hydronephrosis on computerized tomography. The abdominal viscera were in mirror image and the heart was levocardia. The middle portion of the left ureter was dorsal to the left inferior vena cava. The left ureter was reanastomosed ventral to the inferior vena cava. To our knowledge, coexistence of preureteral vena cava and partial situs inversus has not been reported previously in the literature.

A cystic mass arising from the right iliac fossa was an incidental finding at laparotomy and was treated conservatively after a biopsy had shown no evidence of malignancy. Nine years later the patient presented with shock and colonic bleeding. A large cystic lesion arising from the vermiform appendix and invading the sigmoid colon was found and excised. A 6-month-old male rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) was inoculated intravenously and intracutaneously with Mycobacterium leprae obtained from a naturally infected mangabey monkey. The animal developed generalized lepromatous leprosy, and was killed for pathological examination 56 months after inoculation. OBJECTIVE: Peritoneal adhesions are almost ubiquitous following surgery. Peritoneal adhesions can lead to bowel obstruction, digestive problems, infertility, and pain, resulting in many hospital readmissions. Many approaches have been used to prevent or treat adhesions, but none offer reliable results. A method that consistently prevented or treated adhesions would benefit many patients. We hypothesized that an anatomically-based visceral mobilization, designed to promote normal mobility of the abdominal contents, could manually lyse and prevent surgically-induced adhesions.

OBJECTIVE: Pelvic prolapse results from weakness or damage to the normal pelvic-support systems. The main support for the pelvic viscera is provided by the pelvic fascia, which is naturally reinforced by urethra-pelvic ligaments, cardinal ligaments and uterosacral ligaments.
