Cellular and subcellular optogenetic approaches towards neuroprotection and vision restoration.

Optogenetics is defined as the combination of genetic and optical methods to induce or inhibit well-defined events in isolated cells, tissues, or animals. While optogenetics within ophthalmology has been primarily applied towards treating inherited retinal disease, there are a myriad of other applications that hold great promise for a variety of eye diseases including cellular regeneration, modulation of mitochondria and metabolism, regulation of intraocular pressure, and pain control. Supported by primary data from the authors' work with in vitro and in vivo applications, we introduce a novel

Fixational eye movements enable robust edge detection.

Human vision relies on mechanisms that respond to luminance edges in space and time. Most edge models use orientation-selective mechanisms on multiple spatial scales and operate on static inputs assuming that edge processing occurs within a single fixational instance. Recent studies, however, demonstrate functionally relevant temporal modulations of the sensory input due to fixational eye movements. Here we propose a spatiotemporal model of human edge detection that combines elements of spatial and active vision. The model augments a spatial vision model by temporal filtering and shifts the in

Conjoint measurement of perceived transparency and perceived contrast in variegated checkerboards.

One fundamental question in vision research is how the retinal input is segmented into perceptually relevant variables. A striking example of this segmentation process is transparency perception, in which luminance information in one location contributes to two perceptual variables: the properties of the transparent medium itself and of what is being seen in the background. Previous work by Robilotto et al. (2002, 2004) suggested that perceived transparency is closely related to perceived contrast, but how these two relate to retinal luminance has not been established. Here we studied the rela

Catastrophe optics theory unveils the localised wave aberration features that generate ghost images.

Monocular polyplopia (ghost or multiple images) is a serious visual impediment for some people who report seeing two (diplopia), three (triplopia) or even more images. Polyplopia is expected to appear if the point spread function (PSF) has multiple intensity cores (a dense concentration of a large portion of the radiant flux contained in the PSF) relatively separated from each other, each of which contributes to a distinct image. We present a theory that assigns these multiple PSF cores to specific features of aberrated wavefronts, thereby accounting optically for the perceptual phenomenon of

Association between keratoconus, ocular allergy, and sleeping behavior.

PURPOSE: To compare the severity and laterality of keratoconus according to allergic rhinitis, scratching and sleeping habits, and manual dexterity. METHODS: Objective assessments regarding allergic rhinitis, eye itching, and slee-ping position among patients with keratoconus (diagnosed based on corneal tomography) were conducted. Diagnostic criteria and classification were based on the Amsler-Krumeich classification. RESULTS: Ocular pruritus was reported by 29 of 34 participants (85.29%). Eighteen participants (62.07%) reported equal scratching of both eyes, six (20.69%) more on the right e

Optimizing Deeper Spiking Neural Networks for Dynamic Vision Sensing.

Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) have recently emerged as a new generation of low-power deep neural networks due to sparse, asynchronous, and binary event-driven processing. Most previous deep SNN optimization methods focus on static datasets (e.g., MNIST) from a conventional frame-based camera. On the other hand, optimization techniques for event data from Dynamic Vision Sensor (DVS) cameras are still at infancy. Most prior SNN techniques handling DVS data are limited to shallow networks and thus, show low performance. Generally, we observe that the integrate-and-fire behavior of spiking neuron

Exploration of dynamic text presentations in bilateral central vision loss.

PURPOSE: Dynamic text presentation methods may improve reading ability in patients with central vision loss (CVL) by eliminating the need for accurate eye movements. We compared rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) and horizontal scrolling text presentation (scrolling) on reading rate and reading acuity in CVL observers and normally-sighted controls with simulated CVL (simCVL). METHODS: CVL observers' (n = 11) central scotomas and preferred retinal loci (PRL) for each eye were determined with MAIA microperimetry and fixation analysis. SimCVL controls (n = 16) used 4° inferior eccentric vie

Visual hallucinations in psychiatric, neurologic, and ophthalmologic disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recent studies have increased our understanding of the biochemical and structural bases of visual hallucinations in patients with a variety of underlying causes. RECENT FINDINGS: Visual hallucinations may be related to disruption of functional connectivity networks, with underlying biochemical dysfunction such as decreased in cholinergic activity. Structural abnormalities in primary and higher order visual processing areas also have been found in patients with visual hallucinations. The occurrence of visual hallucinations after vision loss, the Charles Bonnet syndrome, may

Role of visual and non-visual cues in constructing a rotation-invariant representation of heading in parietal cortex.

As we navigate through the world, eye and head movements add rotational velocity patterns to the retinal image. When such rotations accompany observer translation, the rotational velocity patterns must be discounted to accurately perceive heading. The conventional view holds that this computation requires efference copies of self-generated eye/head movements. Here we demonstrate that the brain implements an alternative solution in which retinal velocity patterns are themselves used to dissociate translations from rotations. These results reveal a novel role for visual cues in achieving a rotat

Multi-Cue Integration: How Female Mosquitoes Locate a Human Host.

To reproduce, the female yellow fever mosquito has to find a human host. There are many potential cues available to guide such navigation: exhaled carbon dioxide, a plethora of skin odors, the host's visual and heat signatures and, close by, moisture. Recent work is shedding new light on how these are integrated by the mosquito in targeting a human host.

Do we have an internal model of the outside world?

Our phenomenal world remains stationary in spite of movements of the eyes, head and body. In addition, we can point or turn to objects in the surroundings whether or not they are in the field of view. In this review, I argue that these two features of experience and behaviour are related. The ability to interact with objects we cannot see implies an internal memory model of the surroundings, available to the motor system. And, because we maintain this ability when we move around, the model must be updated, so that the locations of object memories change continuously to provide accurate directi

Developmental dyslexia: the difficulties of interpreting poor performance, and the importance of normal performance.

This paper provides a selective review of data on phonology, audition, vision, and learning abilities in developmental dyslexia, with a specific focus on patterns of normal alongside poor performance. Indeed we highlight the difficulties of interpreting poor performance, and we criticize theories of dyslexia that are exclusively suited to explaining poor performance, at the risk of overgeneralizing and predicting deficits in many more situations than are observed. We highlight a number of tasks and conditions where individuals with dyslexia seem to show perfectly normal performance, and we dis

Position of the head is not associated with changes in horse vision.

It has become accepted that the horse cannot see directly in front when the nose is lowered and must therefore rely on the rider. We tested the hypothesis that this conclusion would be correct only if the horse did not adjust the eyeball horizontal axis to changes of the head position. The results of the present study suggest that it is unlikely that horses have limited vision in relation to their head position when driven by the rider, and that the horse maintains the optimal horizontal eyeball position regardless of head position relative to the ground.

Parietal neglect and visual awareness.

The last decade has seen a resurgence of interest in the neural correlates of conscious vision, with most discussion focused on the 'blindsight' that can follow damage to primary visual cortex, in the occipital lobe. We suggest that new insights into the neural basis of visual awareness may be gleaned from a different neuropsychological phenomenon, namely visual 'neglect' after injury to regions in the parietal lobe. Neglect provides several revealing contrasts with occipital blindsight. Here we summarise four key findings. First, unlike the deficits caused by damage to primary visual cortex,

A two-dimensional analog VLSI circuit for detecting discontinuities in early vision.

A large number of computer vision algorithms for finding intensity edges, computing motion, depth, and color, and recovering the three-dimensional shape of objects have been developed within the framework of minimizing an associated "energy" or "cost" functional. Particularly successful has been the introduction of binary variables coding for discontinuities in intensity, optical flow field, depth, and other variables, allowing image segmentation to occur in these modalities. The associated nonconvex variational functionals can be mapped onto analog, resistive networks, such that the stationar

Comparison of associated heterophoria measurements using the Mallett test for near vision and the Sheedy Disparometer.

The Mallett test for near vision and the Sheedy Disparometer are compared in terms of their ability to measure associated heterophoria. Twenty-two asymptomatic subjects were used. With the Disparometer, ten of these subjects, familiar with making prism vergence measurements, exhibited stable forced vergence fixation disparity curves, and the associated heterophoria values using both instruments were not significantly different. However, the twelve subjects not familiar with making such measurements generated fluctuating, unstable fixation disparity curves, and the associated heterophoria value
