Differing lateralized perceptual-motor patterns in schizophrenic and non-psychotic children.

A neuropsychological assessment stressing lateralized perceptual-motor and cognitive abilities was administered to two groups of hospitalized child and adolescent psychiatric patients, 25 schizophrenics and 25 non-psychotics. The findings included an increased incidence of crossed eye-hand dominance in schizophrenics, poorer tactile sensory function in the right hands of schizophrenics than in the left hands, and lower Vocabulary and Similarities WISC subtest scores than Block Design and Object Assembly scores for schizophrenics. Right-left confusion was associated with finger agnosia for schi…

Benchmarking Semantic Segmentation Models via Appearance and Geometry Attribute Editing.

Semantic segmentation takes a pivotal role in various applications such as autonomous driving and medical image analysis. When deploying seg … variety of semantic segmentation models, spanning from conventional close-set models to recent open-vocabulary large models. We have several key findings: 1) advanced open-vocabulary models do not exhibit greater robustness compared to closed-set methods under geometric variations; 2) traditional data augmentation techniques, such as CutOut and CutMix, are l …

Family Environmental Dynamics Differentially Influence Spoken Language Development in Children With and Without Hearing Loss.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether families of children with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) are organized similarly to those of typically developing, typically hearing (TH) children and whether the dimensions of family dynamics and environment are related to spoken language development similarly in children with and without SNHL. METHOD: Primary caregivers of children with SNHL (n = 63) or TH (n = 65) completed the Family Environment Scale-Fourth Edition (FES-4) to assess multiple dimensions of family environment. Children's receptive vocabulary was assessed with the Pe…

Comparing phonological skills and spelling abilities in children with reading and language impairments.

BACKGROUND: Bishop and Snowling (2004) proposed that children with language impairments (LI) and children with reading difficulties (RD) can … ildren with LI; some of these children had poorer phonological skills than predicted from receptive vocabulary, supporting the severity hypothesis. The other group showed a profile with concurrent impairments in vocabulary and phonological skills, in line with the dyslexia-plus hypothesis. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that a subgroup of children with L …

Adolescents Activate Phonology When Reading Familiar Words.

PURPOSE: A central debate in reading research is how phonology functions in written word recognition. There are different perspectives, from the idea that phonology is automatically engaged to access word meaning (prelexical coding) to the opposing view that phonology plays no role in meaning activation (postlexical coding). To tease apart these perspectives, we employed a newly developed written word version of the visual world paradigm (VWP) to measure the real-time activation of phonology during familiar-word reading in adolescents. METHOD: A total of 30 monolingual adolescents aged 11-14

Rehabilitation of spelling in a participant with a graphemic buffer impairment: the role of orthographic neighbourhood in remediating the serial position effect.

Graphemic Output Buffer (GOB) disorder is defined as difficulty with the serial output of a sequence of letters in the output stage of the spelling process. In their rehabilitation study with a GOB patient, Sage and Ellis ( 2006 ) found that improvement on treated words generalised to untreated words from the same orthographic neighbourhoods as treated items, but not to other unrelated words. GOB patients frequently show a bow-shaped accuracy curve across letter positions, where letters at the middle positions are most error-prone. It may be that consistent letters at these middle letter posit

List context manipulation reveals orthographic deficits in Italian readers with developmental dyslexia.

We tested the influence of list context on word frequency and length effects on the reading aloud of Italian developmental dyslexics and skilled peers. The stimuli were presented either in mixed blocks (alternating words and nonwords) or in pure blocks. The analyses based on the rate-and-amount model ( Faust et al., 1999 ) indicated that group differences in reaction times between dyslexic and skilled readers (a) were well accounted for in terms of global components and (b) were modulated by context in the case of words but not in the case of nonwords. ANOVAs on z-transformed reaction time dat

Ameliorating children's reading-comprehension difficulties: a randomized controlled trial.

Children with specific reading-comprehension difficulties can read accurately, but they have poor comprehension. In a randomized controlled … ntion and follow-up. The OL and COM groups also demonstrated significant improvements in expressive vocabulary compared with the control group, and this was a mediator of the improved reading comprehension of the OL and COM groups. We conclude that specific reading-comprehension difficulties reflect (at least partly) underlying oral-language weaknesses that …

Rapid naming deficits in dyslexia: a stumbling block for the perceptual anchor theory of dyslexia.

According to a recent theory of dyslexia, the perceptual anchor theory, children with dyslexia show deficits in classic auditory and phonological tasks not because they have auditory or phonological impairments but because they are unable to form a 'perceptual anchor' in tasks that rely on a small set of repeated stimuli. The theory makes the strong prediction that rapid naming deficits should only be present in small sets of repeated items, not in large sets of unrepeated items. The present research tested this prediction by comparing rapid naming performance of a small set of repeated items

Intensive instruction affects brain magnetic activity associated with oral word reading in children with persistent reading disabilities.

Fifteen children ages 7 to 9 years who had persistent reading difficulties despite adequate instruction were provided with intensive tutorial interventions. The interventions targeted deficient phonological processing and decoding skills for 8 weeks (2 hours per day) followed by an 8-week, 1-hour-per-day intervention that focused on the development of reading fluency skills. Spatiotemporal brain activation profiles were obtained at baseline and after each 8-week intervention program using magnetoencephalography during the performance of an oral sight-word reading task. Changes in brain activit

Children's naming and word-finding difficulties: descriptions and explanations.

PURPOSE: There is a substantial minority of children for whom lexical retrieval problems impede the normal pattern of language development and use. These problems include accurately producing the correct word even when the word's meaning is understood. Such problems are often referred to as word-finding difficulties (WFDs). This article examines the nature of naming and lexical retrieval difficulties in these and other groups of children. METHOD: A review of the relevant literature on lexical access difficulties in children with word-finding difficulties was conducted. Studies were examined i
