The homeless are amongst the most vulnerable groups in developed regions, suffering from high rates of poorly controlled chronic disease, smoking, respiratory conditions, and mental illness, all of which render them vulnerable to new and resurgent disease processes associated with climate change. To date, there have been no papers reviewing the impacts of climate change on the homeless population. This paper provides a framework for understanding the nature of such an impact. We review four pathways: increased heat waves, increased air pollution, increased severity of floods and storms, and th

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the selective vulnerability of specific neuronal populations, the molecular signatures of which are largely unknown. To identify and characterize selectively vulnerable neuronal populations, we used single-nucleus RNA sequencing to profile the caudal entorhinal cortex and the superior frontal gyrus-brain regions where neurofibrillary inclusions and neuronal loss occur early and late in AD, respectively-from postmortem brains spanning the progression of AD-type tau neurofibrillary pathology. We identified RORB as a marker of selectively vulnerable ex

Power outages can impact health, and certain populations may be more at risk. Personal preparedness may reduce impacts, but information on power outage preparedness and risk perception among vulnerable populations is limited. We examined power outage preparedness and concern among New York City residents, including vulnerable populations defined as older adults (≥ 65 years), and respondents with household members who require assistance with daily activities or depend on electric medical devices. A random sample telephone survey was conducted during November-December 2016. Preparedness was defi…

Migrants do not only acquire HIV in their home countries; a significant proportion acquire HIV postmigration. Newly arrived Asian-born gay migrants in Australia have been identified as having low HIV risk but still being vulnerable to HIV. In this paper, we qualitatively examine their postmigration HIV vulnerability embedded within migrant networks, drawing from race-conscious conversations with 11 newly arrived Asian-born gay migrants in Queensland. The formation, composition and power dynamic in their migrant networks reveal the centrality of Whiteness, as a dominant cultural capital rooted

PROBLEM: Positive health behaviours during pregnancy are essential for maternal, fetal, and child wellbeing but can be compromised by poor maternal mental health. Pregnancy-related anxiety (PRA) - including concerns about bodily changes across pregnancy, childbirth fears, and worries about fetal/infant health - reduces positive health behaviours in studies of mostly low-risk women.
QUESTIONS: It is unclear whether this relation between PRA and positive health behaviours exists in lower-income women with barriers to engaging in positive health behaviours, or how it is influenced by other menta

OBJECTIVE: Postoperative hand therapy is important for recovery and enhanced functional outcomes following hand surgery. Access to this essential care is limited in Alabama, however, particularly for vulnerable populations in rural areas where public transportation is scarce. These challenges are further amplified for patients who are unable to drive due to their injuries. This study aimed to quantify disparities and barriers to certified hand therapy access in Alabama.
METHODS: Certified hand therapists in Alabama were identified through the Hand Therapy Certification Commission directory. P…

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being integrated into healthcare systems and has the potential to improve health outcomes. In Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), however, concerns remain that AI may either reduce or exacerbate existing health inequities depending on how it is developed, governed, and implemented. This scoping review aimed to map and synthesise the existing evidence on the implications of AI for health equity among marginalised populations in Sub-Saharan Africa. PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and selected grey literature sources were searched between February and March 2026

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative illness with a profound impact on quality of life (QOL). While palliative care has demonstrated benefits in PD, reach and evidence of effectiveness in underserved populations remain limited. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of a novel palliative care intervention on QOL among underserved patients with PD.
METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of data from a stepped-wedge, pragmatic clinical trial (NCT03076671) among 322 participants with PD. We created an "underserved demographic" composite variable

Coastal environments, particularly those adjacent to Superfund sites, are at increased risk of contaminant release during natural disasters, posing serious threats to nearby communities. To investigate this issue, we employed an advanced laboratory flood simulator to impose arsenic-contaminated sediments to turbulent flooding events. We further monitored changes in arsenic collocation and solid-phase speciation using advanced synchrotron radiation-based techniques to understand the impacts of flooding on arsenic mobility. Our results demonstrate that turbulent conditions significantly enhance

BACKGROUND: Stimulant use has been increasing globally over the past decade. People using drugs are now most often using both opioids and stimulants. In Canada, stimulants were involved in 68% of overdose deaths from 2020 to 2024. The overdose crisis has disproportionately impacted people experiencing homelessness. People experiencing homelessness are more likely to experience an overdose and stimulants are more likely to contribute directly to an overdose death in this population. Despite the growing need, a comprehensive and effective treatment program for people experiencing homelessness wh

BACKGROUND: Latin America faces multiple barriers to healthcare access, particularly affecting the pediatric population. Factors such as socioeconomic vulnerability, armed conflicts, disasters, and insufficient healthcare spending contribute to these difficulties. The barriers include financial, bureaucratic, and geographical issues, which negatively impact the well-being and development of children.
OBJECTIVE: To identify the barriers to healthcare access in the vulnerable pediatric population of Latin America and recognize effective strategies to overcome these barriers.
METHODS: A scoping

For every patient, the MR safety evaluation should include the assessment of risks in three key areas, each corresponding to a specific hazard posed by the electromagnetic fields generated by the MR scanner: ferromagnetic attraction and displacement by the static field; stimulation, acoustic noise, and device interaction by the gradient fields; and bulk and focal heating by the radiofrequency field. MR safety guidelines and procedures are typically designed around the "average" patient: adult, responsive, and of typical habitus. For this type of patient, we can safely expect that a detailed hi

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a life-threatening condition. Given the nature of the disease and associated complications with high mortality and morbidity rates, it is imperative that patients are diagnosed in early infancy, are established with specialists and general pediatric care immediately, and receive continuity in care. A percentage of patients diagnosed with SCD fall within a vulnerable, at-risk population. This population may face greater social barriers that lead to missed or late diagnosis and therefore delayed management, significantly increasing the risk of morbidity and mortality

BACKGROUND: Orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) are a high-risk group for HIV infection, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa.
PURPOSE: This study aims to portray the socioeconomic profile of OVC and examine the association of household and parent/guardian characteristics with the HIV status of OVC.
METHODS: For this quantitative retrospective study, we obtained data from ICAP/DRC for a total of 1,624 OVC from households enrolled for social, financial, and clinical services between January 2017 and April 2020 in two provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haut-Katanga and Kinshasa. We

This paper analyses the relationship between health and socioeconomic disadvantage by adopting a dynamic approach accounting for spatial and temporal changes across ten domains including social isolation, environment, financial hardship and security. As a first step we develop a measure of overall multidimensional deprivation and undertake a decomposition analysis to explore the role of breadth and duration of deprivation on shaping the deprivation gradient in health. Subsequently, we employ unconditional quantile regression to conduct a distributional analysis of the gradient to understand ho

Bacterial dysentery (BD) brings a major disease burden to developing countries. Exploring the influence of temperature and its interaction with other meteorological factors on BD is significant for the prevention and early warning of BD in the context of climate change. Daily BD cases and meteorological data from 2008 to 2018 were collected in all nine prefecture-level cities in Jilin Province. A one-stage province-level model and a two-stage city-specific multivariate meta-pooled level distributed lag non-linear model were established to explore the correlation between temperature and BD, the

Introduction: Recent increases in population movements have created novel health challenges in many areas of the World, and health policies have been adapted accordingly in several countries. However, screening guidelines for infectious diseases are not standardized and generally do not include comprehensive screening for parasitic infections.Areas covered: Malaria, Chagas disease, leishmaniasis, amebiasis, filariases, strongyloidiasis, and schistosomiasis are reviewed, focusing on the challenges posed for their diagnosis and management in vulnerable populations such as migrants. The methodolo…
