Anticholinergic drugs inhibit a variety of intrapulmonary events related to airflow obstruction. When administered as an inhaled aerosol, approximately 90 percent of ipratropium bromide (as with beta-adrenergic aerosols) can be assumed to be swallowed. An oral load of beta-carotene (500 mg) was administered to four normal, four hypo and four hyperthyroid subjects. Plasma beta-carotene content was determined at the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th and 24th hour after administration and at every 24th hour thereafter for 5 consecutive days. In a series of cataract operations with a corneal incision PDS 10-0 absorbable sutures were tested. In contrast to deeper PDS sutures, such as are used in corneoscleral incisions, the corneal sutures opened as early as between 13 and 30 days postoperatively in 5 out of 7 cases. Postoperative irritation was more severe and lasted longer than is usual when non absorbable sutures are used. Salicylate intoxication is common. It results in impaired generation of adenosine triphosphate and produces a primary respiratory alkalosis. In adults the clinical manifestations may closely simulate a cerebrovascular event or alcoholic ketoacidosis. Central nervous system dysfunction, fever, glycosuria, ketonuria, respiratory alkalosis with an elevated anion gap, tinnitus, dehydration, hypokalaemia and haemostatic defects are common. In coeliac disease there is an abnormality of the intestinal mucosa which is caused by ingesting gluten. The intestinal lesion affects predominantly the proximal small intestine and the ileum is either normal or less severely involved than the jejunum. In some cases adaptive changes occur in the ileum, producing enhanced absorption in that region when there is malabsorption in the jejunum. Inhibition of glucose transport by phlorizin was examined in man by perfusion of an isolated small bowel segment. Inhibition was similar in normal and lactase deficient subjects. Since the small bowel of lactase deficient subjects contains only very small amounts of phlorizin hydrolase, phlorizin and not a product of enzymatic cleavage is the inhibitor of the small intestinal glucose carrier.

The variable effect of excessive vitamin A intake on alimentary cholesterolemia was investigated in cockerels of strains of White Leghorns and New Hampshires. With the New Hampshire cockerels, the feeding of 0.5% of dietary cholesterol resulted in greater cholesterolemia when the diet contained 1700 I.U. of vitamin A per kilogram than when it contained 22000 I.U. of vitamin A per kilogram.
