[The variation of the vestibular response vs. the variations of the auditory threshold after administration of glycerol in patients with Meniere's disease].

Vestibular and auditory functions after glycerol intake were assessed correlated in twenty-eight patients diagnosed as menieric according to AAOO criteria. All patients had unilateral Ménière's disease confirmed by monolateral hypoacusia and labyrinthine hypofunction. Hearing thresholds were tested by tone-audiometry, according to the standard glycerol test. Variation in vestibular response were assessed comparing the VOR during the rotatory sinusoidal test as well as the caloric test, before glycerol intake and 2 hours after drug administration. Slow phase angolar velocity, directional prepon

Motor mechanisms relevant to auditory-vocal interactions in songbirds.

Vocal learning through imitation underlies both human speech acquisition and song acquisition in oscine birds; both processes depend on auditory information. In songbirds, a specialized forebrain pathway is responsible for producing the learned temporal and acoustic features of vocalizations, and auditory input reaches every level of this pathway. Nucleus robustus archistriatalis (RA) is the source of the final common output from this pathway; RA is topographically organized into subregions that control the syringeal, respiratory and other effectors involved in vocal production. The acoustic f

Effects of electrical brainstem stimulation on tinnitus.

The primary aim of the auditory brainstem implant (ABI), an investigational device, is to restore auditory sensations in neurofibromatosis-2 patients deafened by bilateral acoustic neuroma surgery. An electrode is placed on the dorsal cochlear nucleus after the tumor is removed through the translabyrinthine approach. This procedure was performed on 18 patients: 13 were completely deafferentated after bilateral tumor removal and had received the ABI during surgery on the second-sided tumor; 5 were implanted at first-sided tumor removal. Three of these 5 patients had usable hearing remaining on

The contribution of ultrasonography to the differential diagnosis of breast cancer.

Overall consecutive breast abnormalities (259 carcinomas, 1820 benign) examined with breast ultrasonography (US) are reported. US sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive value were 67.6, 97.7 and 81.0%, resp. (the corresponding values were 57.9, 97.9 and 77.2% for palpation, 79.9, 93.5 and 73.7% for mammography, and 97.6, 92.6 and 87.6% for cytology). US sensitivity was unaffected by age, whereas it was strongly influenced by tumor size (pT1-76.1%; pT2-87.1%) and histologic type (intraductal-7.4%; invasive ductal/lobular-83.4%; invasive special types-64.1%). The features of the lesion

[Sound frequency analysis for identification of venous air embolism].

Air emboli occurring during surgery are considered to be life-threatening incidents. With the aim of achieving acoustic identification of venous air emboli, a frequency analysis of the sounds induced by an air embolism (millwheel murmurs) as well as of all other unusual sounds, was undertaken during 20 operations, and in experiments with animals. The frequency spectra of the sounds induced by air emboli are characterised by an increase in the amplitudes in the frequency range 1,100 to 3,000 Hz, while the amplitudes of normal heart sounds continuously decrease with increasing frequency. The fre

The effect of conductive hearing loss on the masking-level difference: insert versus standard earphones.

Previous studies have indicated that the masking-level difference is reduced in listeners having conductive hearing loss, even when sensation level is controlled. According to the crosstalk hypothesis, this deficit can be explained in terms of reduced binaural cues at the level of the cochleas, due to acoustic contributions from the bone conduction route. It is possible that such a deficit can be overcome through the use of insert earphones, because such transducers provide a high degree of interaural attenuation. In this study, NoSo and NoS tau thresholds were measured in normal-hearing subje

Video-enhanced DIC images of the noise-damaged and regenerated chick tectorial membrane.

Exposure of the chick cochlea to acoustic overstimulation results in a loss of hair cells and a disruption of the tectorial membrane. With time, new hair cells are produced to replace those that are lost and, concurrently, a new tectorial membrane is regenerated. Previous studies of tectorial membrane regeneration examined tissues that were fixed and processed for scanning and transmission electron microscopy. This processing results in a considerable shrinkage of the membrane, and, therefore, it was unclear how the noise damage and subsequent regeneration affected the unfixed, in situ structu

A guide to the effective use of otoacoustic emissions.

Otoacoustic emission test instruments are now entering routine audiological practice. Two general classes of technique are in use in laboratory work--those employing spectrum analysers to observe the continuous generation of OAEs, both stimulated or unstimulated, and those using transient stimulation and waveform averaging to extract a delayed OAE or "cochlear echo" waveform from ear canal sound. Both methods have particular advantages in clinical applications. The transient OAE type of method has proved very effective in screening applications, particularly in neonates. It is possible to perf

Retrolabyrinthine surgery: anatomy and pathology.

Retrolabyrinthine surgery is done to expose the cerebellopontine angle directly through the ear. It is indicated when the hearing in the ear to be operated upon is useful. The surgical technique entails four steps: complete mastoidectomy, extended posterior exposure of the sigmoid sinus, exposure of the posterior fossa dura, and exposure of the cerebellopontine angle. Retrolabyrinthine exposure of the cerebellopontine angle is indicated in tic douloureux, atypical facial pain, and hemifacial spasm. Recently, this approach has been used for sectioning the vestibular nerve, exploration of the po

Infant cry: a clue to diagnosis.

It has been postulated that the infant cry is a reflection of complex neurophysiologic functions and that analysis of the infant cry can be utilized to assess the infant's status. To test this hypothesis a model of cry production was developed utilizing a computer-based signal processing system that enabled the observer to relate closely the acoustic properties of the cry to the anatomic and physiologic characteristics of the infant producing the cry. The cries of 87 infants were analyzed following a standardized pain stimulus. Cry features were grouped into eight evaluative tests. Only seven

Spiral ganglion neuron loss following organ of Corti loss: a quantitative study.

The packing density of spiral ganglion neurons was measured in 2.5- and 13-15-month-old guinea pigs, in guinea pigs at various times after drug-deafening or acoustic trauma, and in Waltzing guinea pigs of various ages. Analysis of variance and Duncan's new multiple range tests were used to determine significant differences between treatment/survival groups. Spiral ganglion neurons in young and old normal ears did not have significantly different packing densities. Drug-deaf guinea pigs showed a significant loss of neurons by 2 weeks following treatment, a further significant loss by 2 months,

BATSY4-PRO: an open-source multichannel ultrasound recorder for field bioacoustics.

A variety of behavioural studies of echolocation and acoustic communication in free-flying bats depend on multichannel ultrasonic recordings. However, access to these methods remains geographically uneven: tropical and subtropical regions harbour much of the world's bat diversity yet remain underrepresented in experimental behavioural bioacoustics. Conventional systems often depend on costly audio interfaces, laptops, and specialist expertise. Although instrumentation is only one contributor to this disparity, a compact, affordable, openly documented platform can reduce a practical barrier to …

[Management of Neurofibromatosis Type 2].

Surgical and radiotherapeutic interventions for vestibular schwannomas in patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) generally yield less favorable outcomes than in sporadic unilateral cases, often hindering hearing preservation. Managing NF2 entails a lifelong series of complex decisions, repeatedly weighing functional preservation against impairment and surveillance against invasive therapeutic interventions. For both patients and their physicians, a critical issue lies in how to maximize functional preservation while simultaneously securing long-term survival. Auditory reconstruction usin

Secondary trigeminal neuralgia due to vestibular schwannoma.

Secondary trigeminal neuralgia is an infrequent accompaniment of vestibular schwannoma occurring in <1% instances. Multiple theories have been proposed to account for this, including secondary infliction of neurovascular conflict by displacement of trigeminal nerve or vessel by the tumor, direct tumor-related compression of the nerve, arachnoid adhesions or brainstem distortion. Microsurgical resection of vestibular schwannoma, and careful inspection and treatment of any associated neurovascular conflict affords the best outcomes for both tumor control and pain control. Neurovascular conflict

Pathology and tumor microenvironment of vestibular schwannoma.

Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are WHO Grade 1 tumors arising from the vestibule-cochlear nerve and account for 8% of all intracranial neoplasms. In recent years, there has been a dramatic evolution in how the pathology of these tumors is regarded, and there is emerging interest in the role of the tumor microenvironment. In this chapter, we provide a comprehensive description of the pathology and microenvironment of VS, with a particular focus on the interlinked processes of immune cell infiltration and angiogenesis. Improved understanding of the pathophysiology of these tumors has already yielde

Guiding Patients Through Decision-Making in Management of Sporadic Vestibular Schwannoma.

Decision-making in management of sporadic vestibular schwannoma aims to identify the most appropriate options based on tumor characteristics, symptoms, health, and goals for each patient. Advances in knowledge of tumor natural history, improvements in radiation techniques, and achievements in neurologic preservation with microsurgery have shifted emphasis toward maximizing quality of life using a personalized approach. To empower patients to make informed decisions, we present a framework to help match patient values and priorities with reasonable expectations from modern management options. I

A systematic review and meta-analysis of stereotactic radiosurgery as a primary treatment in fast-growing vestibular schwannomas.

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic radiosurgery has been shown to be an effective method of managing vestibular schwannomas. The primary aim here is to establish the impact of pre-treatment fast-growing vestibular schwannomas on the efficacy of stereotactic radiosurgery. METHODS: PubMed, Medline and Embase databases were used. The ROBINS-I ('Risk Of Bias In Non-randomised Studies - of Interventions') tool was utilised to assess for risk of bias. Proportionate meta-analysis and sub-analysis for fast-growing tumours were performed to explore the success rate of stereotactic radiosurgery in stabilising or

Directional and amplitude characteristics of pulsed call sequences in captive free-swimming Pacific white-sided dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obliquidens).

We investigated the directional properties and gain control of a pulsed call sequence that functions as a contact call in Pacific white-sided dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obliquidens). The pulsed call sequences were stereotyped patterns composed of three or more pulsed call elements and were collected from two dolphins, separated into adjacent pools, and allowed to swim freely. Eight hydrophones and an overhead camera were used to determine the positions and directions of the participants. The mean peak frequency and source levels were 8.4 ± 4.4 (standard deviation)-18.7 ± 12.7 kHz and 160.8 ± 3.8
