While most experimental models of acute renal failure (ARF) involve ischaemic or toxic damage to the kidney in non-infected animals, a surprisingly large proportion of patients with ARF exhibit signs of septicaemia or systemic reaction to local infections. This clinical observation suggests an important role of infection-related mediator mechanisms in the genesis of ARF. Distraction osteogenesis as per Ilizarov was used to lengthen the canine mandible. In this study, physiological and ultrastructural examination of the inferior nerve was performed. Using the nose of growing rabbits as an experimental model, the effects on nasal growth of various Killian-type partial resections of the cartilaginous septum were studied. Larger resections in young animals caused decreased height and length of the nose in the adult stage. When infected with cultures of plague microbe reared at 28 C the experimental fleas showed no reliable differences in the mortality as compared to control ones. By contrast, the infection with agent cultures reared at 37 C as well as the infection on agonizing white mice caused a statistically reliable increase in the mortality in insects of both sexes. In the groups of fleas infected on white mice the most intensive mortality was observed during the first 24 hours after the infectious feeding that, apparently, is connected with the effect of toxins present in the blood of agonizing animals.

A patient is described in whom migration of an endotracheal tube into the right main bronchus was suspected when end-tidal carbon dioxide suddenly decreased from 28 to 22 mm Hg. Acute changes with migration of the endotracheal tube into the main bronchus were also studied in an animal experimental model. End-tidal carbon dioxide decreased and tracheal (inflation) pressure increased, with no change in tidal volume. Arterial blood gases showed time-dependent decreases in pH and oxygen tension and an increase in carbon dioxide tension.

The aim of this paper was to investigate the effect of glycerol on experimental endolymphatic hydrops in guinea-pigs. The right endolymphatic sac and duct were obliterated through an extradural posterior fossa approach. To investigate the pathological changes of hyperphonated vocal folds 15 cats were used and over-cry was induced by mechanical stimuli. The longest experiment time was 15 weeks. All of the larynges were taken and the vocal folds were examined grossly and microscopically. The results were as follows: 1) liquid exudate accumulation beneath the epithelium developed in all of the experimental animals; 2) thickening of the epithelium was noticed in cats which had hyperphonated for more than 4 weeks; 3) acute laryngitis occurred in three cats.

The diffuse peritonitis is a syndrome during the course of which biochemical reactive chains are activated according to a cascade principle. Most of these biochemical reactive chains develop within an acid environment. The solutions applied for abdominal lavage so far had neutral pH value. The present acute peritonitis experiment has shown that a peritoneal pH increase during lavage therapy stopped the septic reactive chain and thus improved significantly the rate of survival in the test animals. These experimental findings ar now subject for clinical examination.

Thousands of children are born each year with alcohol-related birth defects. However, despite comparable levels of prenatal alcohol exposure, some children are affected less severely than others, whereas others do not appear to be affected at all. Epidemiological investigations and experimental studies in animals suggest that maternal or fetal genetic factors, maternal age or parity, and pattern of drinking are important risk factors affecting alcohol's actions on the embryo/fetus. Identifying these and other risk factors may provide a means for cost-effective prevention efforts.
