Initial cancer treatment and survival in children, adolescents, and young adults with Hodgkin lymphoma: A population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is a treatable tumor affecting children, adolescents and young adults (AYAs; 15-39 years old). Population-based studies report worse survival for non-White children and AYAs but have limited data on individual therapeutic exposures. This study examined overall and HL-specific survival in a population-based cohort of patients while adjusting for sociodemographic factors and treatment. METHODS: Data for 4807 patients younger than 40 years with HL (2007-2017) were obtained from the California Cancer Registry. Individual treatment information was extracted from t

The change in tumor volume after induction chemotherapy with docetaxel plus cisplatin in 259 nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients.

PURPOSE: To assess the tumor volume change after induction chemotherapy with docetaxel plus cisplatin (DP) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). METHODS: A total of 259 non-metastatic NPC patients who received DP induction chemotherapy were retrospectively reviewed. Gross tumor volume of nasopharynx and lymph nodes (GTVnx and GTVnd) were contoured before and after chemotherapy. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify factors associated with tumor volume reduction. RESULTS: For GTVnx, the mean volume before and after chemotherapy were 43.2 cm3 vs 37.4 cm3 (p < 0.001) and

[Current status of diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer peritoneal metastasis].

Peritoneal metastasis is the most common distant metastasis of gastric cancer. As an end-stage event of gastric cancer, patients with peritoneal metastasis often have lost the chance of radical resection, and even after palliative surgical resection, the long-term outcomes are still not satisfactory. In recent years, with the application and promotion of laparoscopic technology, neoadjuvant intraperitoneal and systemic chemotherapy, hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy and cytoreductive surgery, through perioperative comprehensive treatment strategies by multidisciplinary team, the qualit

Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy (PIPAC): The First Reported Case in Brazil Using Standardized Technique with the Capnopen® Nebulizer Device.

BACKGROUND Peritoneal metastasis is a common progression of abdominal-pelvic cancers, and it is associated with poorer oncological prognosis when compared to other metastasis sites. Its treatment has limited results, mainly because of poor bioavailability of chemotherapy within the abdominal cavity after systemic administration. Pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC) has been proposed as a novel method to deliver chemotherapy directly into the peritoneal surface; it combines the effectiveness and response of an intraperitoneal therapy with benefits of a minimally invasive app

New developments in locally advanced nonsmall cell lung cancer.

Locally advanced nonsmall cell lung cancer, due to its varying prognosis, is grouped according to TNM stage IIIA, IIIB and IIIC. Developments over the last 3 years have been focused on the integration of immunotherapy into the combination treatment of a locally definitive therapy (surgery or radiotherapy) and chemotherapy. For concurrent chemoradiotherapy, consolidation therapy with durvalumab was established. Adjuvant targeted therapy has again gained increasing interest. In order to adapt treatment to the specific stage subgroup and its prognosis, fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomogra

Outcome of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia in lymphoid blastic phase and Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia treated with hyper-CVAD and dasatinib.

BACKGROUND: Dasatinib monotherapy has demonstrated modest clinical activity in chronic myeloid leukemia in lymphoid blastic phase (CML-LBP). The outcome of Philadelphia chromosome (Ph)-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) has dramatically improved with hyperfractionated cyclophosphamide, vincristine sulfate, doxorubicin hydrochloride, and dexamethasone (hyper-CVAD) in combination with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). METHODS: The authors reviewed 85 patients (23 with CML-LBP and 62 with newly diagnosed Ph-positive ALL) who received hyper-CVAD plus dasatinib. RESULTS: In the CML-LBP

Research progress in the treatment of partial platinum-sensitive recurrent ovarian cancer.

Ovarian cancer is a common malignant tumor in gynaecology and its mortality rate is the highest in gynecological cancer. Ovarian cancer patients should face platinum resistance, caused by multiple recurrences. According to the platinum-free interval (PFI), recurrent ovarian cancer can be divided into platinum-resistant (PFI<6 months) and platinum-sensitive (PFI≥6 months). When PFI is 6-12 months, it belongs to the partial platinum-sensitive ovarian cancer. At present, how to prolong the survival of patients with partial platinum-sensitive recurrent ovarian cancer is difficult. Secondary cytore

A medicare database analysis of practice patterns in patients with mantle cell lymphoma.

INTRODUCTION: Although treatment approaches to younger fit patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) are well-described, the optimal treatment of older or less fit patients with varying comorbidities is less clear. The objectives of this study were to examine first-line treatment patterns, and the impact of comorbidities and age on treatment choices and overall survival (OS) in a large, predominantly older, Medicare population. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In Medicare data from 1/1/2007-8/31/2015, 3,008 patients with MCL were identified. Data on age, gender, race, Charlson comorbidities, Charlson com

Real-World Data on Adult T-Cell Leukemia/Lymphoma in Latin America: A Study From the Grupo de Estudio Latinoamericano de Linfoproliferativos.

PURPOSE: Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) is an aggressive disease caused by the human T-cell leukemia virus type 1. Real-world data of ATLL in Latin America are lacking. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed patients with ATLL (acute, lymphomatous, chronic, and smoldering) encountered in 11 Latin American countries between 1995 and 2019. Treatment response was assessed according to the 2009 consensus report. Survival curves were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test. RESULTS: We identified 253 patients; 226 (lymphomatous: n = 122, acute: n = 73, chronic: n = 26, and smo

Timing of Pegfilgrastim: Association with Febrile Neutropenia in a Pediatric Solid and CNS Tumor Population.

Background: While recommended timing of pegfilgrastim administration is ≥24 h after chemotherapy, patient barriers to next day administration, available adult evidence, and pharmacokinetic data have led to earlier administration in some pediatric patients with solid and central nervous system tumors. The purpose of this study was to compare patient outcomes by timing of pegfilgrastim after chemotherapy. Methods: A retrospective chart review examined timing of 932 pegfilgrastim administrations to 182 patients, 0-29 years of age. The primary outcome was febrile neutropenia (FN); the secondary ou

[Cooccurrence of classic Hodgkin lymphoma and multiple myeloma].

Although classic Hodgkin's lymphoma (CHL) sometimes develops after treatment for multiple myeloma (MM), simultaneous diagnosis of both malignancies is extremely rare without previous treatment history. Here we describe a case of a 54-year-old female who complained of left cervical lymphadenopathy. Biopsy specimen from the left cervical lymph node revealed mixed-cellularity CHL. Bone marrow aspirate comprised 10.3% plasma cells. She was diagnosed with MM due to involved: uninvolved serum free light chain ratio of >100. She achieved complete response for CHL after 4 cycles of doxorubicin, bleomy

Response-adapted omission of radiotherapy and comparison of consolidation chemotherapy in children and adolescents with intermediate-stage and advanced-stage classical Hodgkin lymphoma (EuroNet-PHL-C1): a titration study with an open-label, embedded, multinational, non-inferiority, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents with intermediate-stage and advanced-stage classical Hodgkin lymphoma achieve an event-free survival at 5 years of about 90% after treatment with vincristine, etoposide, prednisone, and doxorubicin (OEPA) followed by cyclophosphamide, vincristine, prednisone, and procarbazine (COPP) and radiotherapy, but long-term treatment effects affect survival and quality of life. We aimed to investigate whether radiotherapy can be omitted in patients with morphological and metabolic adequate response to OEPA and whether modified consolidation chemotherapy reduces gonad
