Prevalence and Outcomes of Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Multinational Study Across Asia.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) frequently coexists with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). PSC is a progressive disease that may lead to end-stage liver failure requiring liver transplantation (LT). Although PSC-IBD has been extensively studied in Western populations, data from Asia remain limited. We conducted an international multicenter study across Asia to investigate the prevalence of PSC in IBD patients and evaluate its impact on clinical outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients with IBD from 25 hospitals in 6 Asian countries. The prim

Reporting of participant race and ethnicity from COVID-19 randomized controlled drug and biologicals trials: a scoping review.

Racial and ethnic minorities have been disproportionally burdened by hospitalization and death due to COVID-19. Participation of individuals of diverse races and ethnicities in clinical trials, according to study-level characteristics of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that test effectiveness of COVID-19 drugs, could be insightful for future researchers. Our objective for this scoping review was to describe the frequency of race and ethnicity reported as demographic variables and specific reporting of race and ethnicity according to COVID-19 RCT characteristics. We conducted comprehensive

The P4 Study: 6 months postpartum body composition in normotensive vs hypertensive pregnancies.

OBJECTIVES: Increased postpartum weight retention, a risk factor for long-term obesity and cardiometabolic diseases, is greater following hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), possibly mediated by body composition (BC) changes. However, normative postpartum BC data are lacking. This study aimed to: (1) construct a reference range for BC in normotensive women 6 months postpartum for Caucasian and Asian populations, (2) compare BC 6 months postpartum between women who had a normotensive pregnancy (NP), gestational hypertension (GH) and preeclampsia (PE) in pregnancy, and (3) explore predict

Osteoporosis Epidemiology, Diagnosis, and Management Across Race and Ethnicity in the United States.

Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease of reduced bone strength that leads to an increased risk of fragility fracture. Osteoporosis epidemiology, diagnosis, and management all are influenced by race and ethnicity. Studies have found approximately 40% to 50% lower fracture rates in Black and Asian as compared to White women. Hispanic women have generally been shown to have lower fracture rates than White women, but the magnitude of difference is uncertain. Studies in men are fewer. Substantial differences in bone density and structure contribute to these differences in fracture rates. The

Validation of the Updated Alternate Fistula Risk Score for Prediction of Postoperative Pancreatic Fistula After Pancreatoduodenectomy.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) remains a significant challenge following pancreatoduodenectomy (PD), contributing to morbidity and mortality. Various risk assessment models have been established to predict the likelihood of POPF. An updated alternate fistula risk score (ua-FRS) has been recently refined and validated within European cohorts. However, the validation of this score in South Asian cohorts remains relatively unexplored. This study aims to validate the applicability of ua-FRS for the prediction of POPF in patients undergoing PD in the South Asian populat

Genetic associations and parent-of-origin effects of PVRL1 in non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate across multiple ethnic populations.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the associations of PVRL1 gene variants with non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) by evaluating transmission distortion and parent-of-origin (POO) effects in multiple ethnic populations. METHODS: We conducted allelic and genotypic transmission disequilibrium tests (TDT) on 10 single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) in PVRL1 using data from 142 Korean families with an affected child. POO effects were analyzed using the POO likelihood ratio test, comparing transmission rates of maternally and paternally inherited alleles. To assess generali

DETECTION OF ELEPHANT ENDOTHELIOTROPIC HERPESVIRUS 1A IN ARCHIVAL TISSUE USING RNASCOPE® IN SITU HYBRIDIZATION.

Hemorrhagic disease due to elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus infection (EEHV-HD) is an important cause of calf mortality in managed and free-ranging Asian (Elephas maximus) and African elephant (Loxodonta spp.) populations. Consequently, infection has profound implications for elephant population growth and sustainability. The mechanisms of disease caused by EEHV (i.e., infection, dissemination, shedding, latency) are relatively undefined, in part because of a lack of robust validated assays for detecting viral gene products in relevant samples. To address this issue, we used RNAscope® in

Clozapine ultrarapid metabolism during weak induction probably exists but requires careful diagnosis. A literature review, five new cases and a proposed definition.

During weak induction (from smoking and/or valproate co-prescription), clozapine ultrarapid metabolizers (UMs) need very high daily doses to reach the minimum therapeutic concentration of 350 ng/ml in plasma; clozapine UMs need clozapine doses higher than: 1) 900 mg/day in patients of European/African ancestry, or 2) 600 mg/day in those of Asian ancestry. Published clozapine UMs include 10 males of European/African ancestry, mainly assessed with single concentrations. Five new clozapine UMs (two of European and three of Asian ancestry) with repeated assessments are described. A US double-blind

Association between transforming growth factor-beta 1 polymorphisms and risk of pre-eclampsia: a meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Pre-eclampsia (PE) is a common pregnancy-specific disorder characterized by hypertension and proteinuria. Previous studies have generated conflicting results regarding the association of transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) gene polymorphisms (+869 T/C, -509 C/T, +915 G/C, and -800 G/A) with PE risk. Therefore, we conducted this meta-analysis to more precisely assess the role of TGF-β1 gene polymorphisms in PE. METHODS: Eligible studies were retrieved from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Elsevier Science Direct, and several Chinese databases. The pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95

The Contribution of Deleterious Rare Alleles in ENPP1 and Osteomalacia Causative Genes to Atypical Femoral Fracture.

CONTEXT: Atypical femoral fractures (AFFs) are very rare atraumatic or mild trauma fractures in the subtrochanteric region or femoral shaft. Some unique genetic variants in Asian populations might confer susceptibility to AFF, since the incidence of AFFs is higher in Asian populations. OBJECTIVE: Because rare variants have been found to be causative in some diseases and the roles of osteomalacia causative genes have not been reported, we investigated rare variants in genes causing abnormal mineralization. METHODS: Exome sequencing was performed to detect variants in gene coding and boundary
