Impact of advanced maternal age on adverse infant outcomes: A Japanese population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: The number of births among women of higher age has been rapidly increasing in many countries for several decades. While recent epidemiological studies on the impact of maternal age on infant outcomes in developed countries have evaluated the outcomes of singleton infants, few population-based studies have investigated all deliveries including multiple births. Thus, we aimed to assess the impact of maternal age on adverse infant outcomes using data from all birth certificates, including multiple births, in Shiga prefecture, Japan. STUDY DESIGN: The data from all birth certificates i

A Descriptive Study of Maternal Choices for Labor Pain Relief.

DESIGN: In a setting with a wider than usual variety of available labor pain relief methods, a prospective, descriptive study was conducted of labor pain relief methods desired by low-risk women prenatally, during labor, and at delivery. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Of all women registering for care between 2017 and 2020, a total of 2562 women were screened for low-risk status and then offered study participation, if eligible. Of 1185 eligible women, 512 remained at low risk until admission in labor and completed the study. Pain relief methods chosen were compared with the type of labor, type of deliver

Meta-analysis on prevalence of vaginal group B streptococcus colonization and preterm births in India.

OBJECTIVE: Preterm birth is a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Vaginal colonization of Group B Streptococci (GBS) is associated with increased risk of preterm birth. However, the association of GBS colonization and preterm births in the Indian context remains an unrecognized problem. DATA SOURCES: Data was collected using various online search tools from 36 (1981-2019) Indian studies comprising 9778 cases. METHOD OF STUDY SELECTION: Studies reporting the prevalence of GBS colonization in the Indian population were included. TABULATION, INTEGRATION, AND RESULTS: The prevalenc

[Analysis of risk factors for neonatal death in Chile, 2010-2014].

AIM: To analyze socio-demographic as maternal and newborn factors associated with neonatal mortality in a tertiary hospital in Chile. PATIENTS AND METHOD: A retrospective analysis of case (neonatal death) and control (live births) was performed. A match 1:2 proportion considering year, month of birth and gender was made. By reviewing medical records and existing databases, we analyzed sociodemographic and pathophysiological variables of the mother and their newborn in a period between 2010 and 2014. RESULTS: During the period of study 81 neonatal deaths occurred in the hospital, with an esti

Macrosomic births in the united states: determinants, outcomes, and proposed grades of risk.

OBJECTIVE: We describe maternal risk factors for macrosomia and assess birth weight categories to determine predictive thresholds of adverse outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed linked live birth and infant death cohort files from 1995 to 1997 for the United States with the use of selected term (37-44 weeks of gestation) single live births to mothers who were US residents. We compared macrosomic infants (4000-4499 g, 4500-4999 g, and >5000 g infants) with a normosomic control group of infants who weighed 3000 to 3999 g. RESULTS: Maternal risk factors for macrosomia included nonsmoking, advanc

Factors influencing adolescent birth outcome.

In spite of a growing concern about adolescent pregnancy, factors that influence its birth outcome have remained inadequately defined. Data on sociodemographic variables, maternal health habits, medical and obstetric complications, and neonatal outcome measures were collected between October 1993 and May 1994. A total of 212 (110 adolescent and 102 non-adolescent) mothers and their newborns were included in the study. The data were analyzed using the EPI Info and the Statistical Analysis System softwares. Adolescent pregnancy was found to be associated with significantly higher rates of premat

Vaginal birth after cesarean section: an update on physician trends and patient perceptions.

The increased number of women having a vaginal birth after a cesarean section can be attributed to changing physician trends. Women eligible for vaginal birth after cesarean section include those with previous low vertical incisions, multiple previous incisions and even unknown scars, regardless of the method of closure or previous indication. Limited data suggest that in carefully selected women a current twin gestation, breech presentation, or the presence of fetal macrosomia are not contraindications for a trial of labor, in the presence of a uterine scar. Changing trends in the management

The incidence of histological chorioamnionitis in IVF/GIFT preterm births.

A retrospective case control study was designed to investigate the role of subclinical infection as a risk factor for the high rate of preterm deliveries in IVF/GIFT pregnancies. The cases and the controls were identified from the records of consecutive livebirths of < 35 weeks' gestational age (GA), at King George V Hospital from 1987-1993. Fifty one singleton and 58 twin IVF/GIFT preterm births were matched for GA, year of birth, plurality, maternal age, parity, preclampsia and antepartum haemorrhage. As a marker of subclinical infection, the incidence of histological chorioamnionitis (HCA)

Magnetic resonance imaging in late pregnancy to improve labour and delivery outcomes - a systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides excellent soft tissue visualisation which may be useful in late pregnancy to predict labour outcome and maternal/neonatal birth trauma. OBJECTIVE: To study if MRI in late pregnancy can predict maternal and neonatal outcomes of labour and birth. METHODS: Systematic review of studies that performed MRI in late pregnancy or immediately postpartum. Studies were included if they imaged maternal pelvic or neonatal structures and assessed birth outcome. Meta-analysis was not performed due to the heterogeneity of studies. RESULTS: Eighteen studi

Resilience to maintain quality of intrapartum care in war torn Yemen: a retrospective pre-post study evaluating effects of changing birth volumes in a congested frontline hospital.

BACKGROUND: Fragile and conflict-affected states contribute with more than 60% of the global burden of maternal mortality. There is an alarming need for research exploring maternal health service access and quality and adaptive responses during armed conflict. Taiz Houbane Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Yemen was established during the war as such adaptive response. However, as number of births vastly exceeded the facility's pre-dimensioned capacity, a policy was implemented to restrict admissions. We here assess the restriction's effects on the quality of intrapartum care and birth out

Estimating the Financial Impact of Reducing Primary Cesareans.

INTRODUCTION: Preventing a primary cesarean birth in nulliparous women with term, singleton, vertex pregnancies (NTSV) is recognized as an important strategy to reduce maternal morbidities and risks to the newborn. Multiple professional organizations are supporting approaches to safely reduce NTSV cesarean rates, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists; the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine; and the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses. The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) is leading one such effort as part of its Healthy Birth Initi

Medical abortion and the risk of subsequent adverse pregnancy outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The long-term safety of surgical abortion in the first trimester is well established. Despite the increasing use of medical abortion (abortion by means of medication), limited information is available regarding the effects of this procedure on subsequent pregnancies. METHODS: We identified all women living in Denmark who had undergone an abortion for nonmedical reasons between 1999 and 2004 and obtained information regarding subsequent pregnancies from national registries. Risks of ectopic pregnancy, spontaneous abortion, preterm birth (at <37 weeks of gestation), and low birth we

Strategies for feeding the preterm infant.

According to many experts in neonatal nutrition, the goal for nutrition of the preterm infant should be to achieve a postnatal growth rate approximating that of the normal fetus of the same gestational age. Unfortunately, most preterm infants, especially those born very preterm with extremely low birth weight, are not fed sufficient amounts of nutrients to produce normal fetal rates of growth and, as a result, end up growth-restricted during their hospital period after birth. Growth restriction is a significant problem, as numerous studies have shown definitively that undernutrition, especiall

Factors Influencing Preterm Birth in a Cohort of Predominantly Black Fathers: Preliminary Findings from the Fathers Matter Study.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth remains a leading cause of infant mortality, with rates disproportionately high among Black women in the United States. While maternal risk factors are well-studied, paternal influences, particularly in Black families, remain underexplored. This study examined associations between paternal factors and preterm birth in a predominantly Black sample. METHODS: We analyzed data from 221 fathers in the Fathers Matter study, embedded within the Biosocial Impact on Black Births (BIBB) cohort study. Paternal sociodemographic, health, behavioral and psychosocial data were coll

A Qualitative Study of Perspectives of Black Women on Autonomy and Motivational Interviewing.

PURPOSE: Motivational interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based strategy to modify health behaviors, including some risk factors for adverse birth outcomes. Black women, who have disproportionately high rates of adverse birth outcomes, have reported mixed preferences on MI. This study explored the acceptability of MI among Black women who are at high risk for adverse birth outcomes. METHODS: We conducted qualitative interviews with women with a history of preterm birth. Participants were English-language proficient and had Medicaid-insured infants. We purposively oversampled women whose infants

Prenatal Perceived Stress and Adverse Birth Outcomes Among Puerto Rican Women.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth and low birthweight contribute substantially to the disproportionately high infant mortality rates experienced by Puerto Ricans in the United States. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the timing and pattern of prenatal psychosocial stress increased risk of adverse birth outcomes in this high-risk population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Proyecto Buena Salud was a prospective cohort study conducted from 2006 to 2011 among predominantly Puerto Rican women. Participants (n = 1,267) were interviewed in early, mid-, and late pregnancy. We evaluated associations b
