In situ scarless skin healing of a severe human burn wound induced by a hCTLA4Ig gene-transferred porcine skin graft.

Preventing fibrosis or hypertrophic scar formation following tissue damage is still a big challenge despite the numerous approaches clinicians currently use. Hitherto, no written account was available of a successful case of scarless skin healing after a severe burn injury. Here, we report the first case of the "perfect regenerative healing" of a severe burn wound with no hypertrophic scar formation in which a postage stamp skin autograft was covered with human cytotoxic-T-lymphocyte associated antigen4-immunoglobulin (hCTLA4Ig) gene-transferred pig skin. We also discuss the mechanisms involve

Source apportionment of PM2.5 using PMF combined online bulk and single-particle measurements: Contribution of fireworks and biomass burning.

Fireworks (FW) could significantly worsen air quality in short term during celebrations. Due to similar tracers with biomass burning (BB), the fast and precise qualification of FW and BB is still challenging. In this study, online bulk and single-particle measurements were combined to investigate the contributions of FW and BB to the overall mass concentrations of PM2.5 and specific chemical species by positive matrix factorization (PMF) during the Chinese New Year in Hong Kong in February 2013. With combined information, fresh/aged FW (abundant 140K2NO3+ and 213K3SO4+ formed from 113K2Cl+ dis

Fine-Tuning the Endcap Chemistry of Acrylated Poly(Ethylene Glycol)-Based Hydrogels for Efficient Burn Wound Exudate Management.

Most commercial dressings with moderate to high exudate uptake capacities are mechanically weaker and/or require a secondary dressing. The current research article focuses on the development of hydrogel-based wound dressings combining mechanical strength with high exudate absorption capacities using acrylate-endcapped urethane-based precursors (AUPs). AUPs with varying poly(ethylene glycol) backbone molar masses (10 and 20 kg mol-1 ) and endcap chemistries are successfully synthesized in toluene, subsequently processed into UV-cured hydrogel sheets and are benchmarked against several commercia

Characterization of the Basal and mTOR-Dependent Acute Pulmonary and Systemic Immune Response in a Murine Model of Combined Burn and Inhalation Injury.

Severe burn injury leads to a cascade of local and systemic immune responses that trigger an extreme state of immune dysfunction, leaving the patient highly susceptible to acute and chronic infection. When combined with inhalation injury, burn patients have higher mortality and a greater chance of developing secondary respiratory complications including infection. No animal model of combined burn and inhalation injury (B+I) exists that accurately mirrors the human clinical picture, nor are there any effective immunotherapies or predictive models of the risk of immune dysfunction. Our earlier w

Dissemination and Genetic Relatedness of Multidrug-Resistant and Extensively Drug-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii Isolates from a Burn Hospital in Iraq.

Acinetobacter baumannii is an aggressive opportunistic bacterial pathogen that causes severe nosocomial infections, especially among burn patients. An increasing number of hospitals-acquired infections have been reported all over the world. However, little attention has been paid to the relatedness between A. baumannii isolates from different hospital environments and patients. In this study, 27 isolates were collected from the Burn and Plastic Surgery Hospital of Al Sulaymaniyah City, Iraq, from January through December 2019 (11 from patients and 16 from the wards environment), identified to

Koebner Phenomenon: Café-au-Lait Spots Developing after a Secondary-Degree Burn in a Patient with Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

An 18-year-old woman with an established history of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) presented for her 1-year dermatologic follow-up. Physical examination revealed two subcutaneous nodules on her right arm, axillary freckling, scattered café-au-lait macules (CALMs) on the trunk, and a 12 cm × 17 cm hyperpigmented rectangular region on her right flank (Figure 1). The pigmented patch contained numerous new CALMs that were morphologically consistent with CALMs identified on prior examinations; neither the patch nor the CALMs within it were present at prior examinations. Interestingly, the appearan

Targeting HMGB1-NFκb Axis and miR-21 by Glycyrrhizin: Role in Amelioration of Corneal Injury in a Mouse Model of Alkali Burn.

Corneal neovascularization (CNV) is a sight-threatening condition usually associated with various inflammatory settings including chemical injury. High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is identified as an inflammatory alarmin in diverse tissue damage. Here, we evaluate the expression of HMGB1 and the consequences of its inhibition through its selective inhibitor glycyrrhizin (GLY) in alkali burn-induced corneal inflammation and neovascularization. GLY effectively attenuated alkali burn-induced HMGB1 expression at both mRNA and protein levels. Furthermore, slit-lamp analysis, ink perfusion, H&E sta
