The small molecule cyclotriazadisulfonamide (CADA) down-modulates the human CD4 receptor, an important factor in T cell activation. Here, we addressed the immunosuppressive potential of CADA using different activation models. BACKGROUND: T-lymphocytes are involved in tumor progression and regression. Actinic keratoses (AK) are atypical proliferations of keratinocytes of the skin. Some AK progress into invasive cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCC). Keratoacanthomas (KA) are either classified as a cSCC subtype or a benign tumor with histologic resemblance to well-differentiated cSCC as it is supposed to regress spontaneously. A patient suffering from common variable immunodeficiency is described, who developed a myelitis under treatment with glucocorticosteroids. Later on, autoimmune complications had to be treated with azathioprine. An exacerbation of the myelitis, retinitis, encephalitis and colitis was observed and a cytomegalovirus infection diagnosed. This infection does not represent a typical complication of common variable immunodeficiency. A functional NK cell defect was detected that may contribute to susceptibility for cytomegalovirus infection in addition to immunosuppressive therapy.
