CONTEXT: Neonatal sepsis is an early infection occurring within 28 days of the postnatal life. It has nonspecific signs and symptoms which make the diagnosis cumbersome. It inflicts an increase in morbidity and mortality among neonates. Procalcitonin (PCT) is yet another acute phase reactant, which is synthesized by the C-cells of thyroid gland.
AIMS: The aim of our study is to evaluate PCT as a diagnostic marker of neonatal sepsis in comparison with C-reactive protein (CRP).
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted at our tertiary care hospital in Puducherry.

Androgen deprivation therapy improves survival of patients with prostate cancer and leads to hypogonadal state. Gonadal hormones are essential for skeletal integrity and hypogonadism constitutes a major risk factor for osteoporosis. To examine the bone loss secondary to androgen deprivation therapy, we reviewed the bone mineral density (BMD) studies of 152 patients with prostate cancer with mean duration of androgen deprivation therapy of 58 months. Sporadic medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) usually presents with a thyroid mass, cervical lymphadenopathy or other local cervical symptoms. Often the diagnosis is unsuspected pre-operatively. We report a unique case of a mixed follicular medullary thyroid carcinoma presenting as a tumour with extreme vascularity. The management of hypervascular thyroid tumours is discussed together with current controversies regarding persistent hypercalcitoninaemia.

Intensive training in a humid and warm environment can cause exertional heat stroke (ExHS) and rhabdomolysis (RBD) in military recruits. The role of capsaicin-sensitive pathways and CGRP in postoperative gastric ileus was investigated. Abdominal surgery was performed under enflurane anesthesia, and 5 min later, the 20-min rate of gastric emptying was measured by the phenol red method in conscious rats. Surgery inhibited gastric emptying by 76-83% compared with rats receiving anesthesia alone. Capsaicin on the celiac/mesenteric ganglia (10-21 days before) reduced gastric ileus by 33 +/- 8%, whereas perivagal capsaicin had no effect.
