SNP-based selection strategies reveal antagonistic and favorable genetic architectures between milk production and fertility traits in dairy cattle: A simulation study.

This study evaluated genetic responses to selection based on single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) subsets with different effect directions on milk production and fertility in dairy cattle. A population of 1000 individuals was simulated using 50,000 SNP markers sampled from the Illumina BovineSNP50 BeadChip panel to represent a realistic genomic architecture. SNP effects were derived from previously published genome-wide association study (GWAS) results, in which the direction of SNP effects was inferred from reported test statistics (t-values). Five selection scenarios were evaluated over 50 g

Effects of Newer Veterinary Macrolide Antimicrobials on the CYP3A-Dependent Metabolism in Cattle Liver Microsomes: Potential Metabolic Drug-Drug Interaction with Monensin.

Traditional macrolide antimicrobials are inhibitors of cytochrome P4503A (CYP3A) in cattle liver. Monensin (MON), an ionophore with a narrow safety margin, undergoes CYP3A-dependent O-demethylation, and its incompatibility with macrolides is well recognized in livestock animals. This study evaluated the effects of newer macrolides-tilmicosin (TIL), tulathromycin (TUL), and gamithromycin (GAM)-on CYP3A-dependent metabolism in bovine liver microsomes and examined how these drugs influence MON hepatic metabolism. Molecular docking studies were also performed to predict their interactions with CYP

Divergent Gut Microbiota Configurations Are Associated with Contrasting Physiological Profiles in Grazing Yaks and Introduced Feedlot Holstein Cattle Under High-Altitude Conditions.

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau presents extreme environmental challenges, including hypobaric hypoxia and nutritional scarcity, to which indigenous yaks (Bos grunniens) are remarkably adapted, whereas introduced Holstein cattle (Bos taurus) often exhibit severe maladaptation. This study compared the gut microbiota of grazing yaks (n = 20) and feedlot Holstein cattle (n = 20) under high-altitude conditions using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing (for community composition) and shotgun metagenomic sequencing (for direct functional profiling of CAZy, COG, and KEGG pathways), combined with in vitro fer

The Impact of Heat Stress on Dairy Cattle: Effects on Milk Quality, Rumination Behaviour, and Reticulorumen pH Response Using Machine Learning Models.

Heat stress has a major impact on dairy cow health and productivity, especially during early lactation. Conventional heat stress monitoring methods frequently rely on single indicators, such as the temperature-humidity index (THI), which may miss subtle physiological and metabolic responses. This study presents a novel threshold-based classification framework that integrates biologically meaningful combinations of environmental, behavioural, and physiological variables to detect early-stage heat stress responses in dairy cows. Six composite heat stress conditions (C1-C6) were developed using r

In silico design of novel multi-epitope peptide vaccine against Neospora caninum induced cattle abortion targeting extracellular GRA2 and Nc-p43 protein.

Neospora caninum (NC) is a protozoan infection causing neosporosis, a disease that leads to substantial economic loss in livestock, especially in cattle, sheep, and goats. Unfortunately, there is presently no viable vaccination or authorized therapy available. Our research applied a bioinformatics approach to design a multi-epitope peptide (MEP) vaccine aimed at the pathogenic proteins GRA2 and Nc-p43 of NC, which are critical in parasite-mediated antigenicity and host interactions. Consequently, our research employs an in-silico methodology, including protein sequence retrieval, epitope predi

Resistance to acaricides in the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae) from dairy farms in the Triângulo Mineiro region, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Rhipicephalus microplus is a major ectoparasite of cattle in tropical and subtropical regions and poses a serious threat to animal welfare and productivity. Chemical acaricides remain the main method of control in Brazil. Nevertheless, resistance to these compounds has become increasingly widespread. Minas Gerais is the leading milk-producing state in Brazil, yet data on acaricide resistance in one of its key dairy-producing region, the Triângulo Mineiro, remain scarce. This study evaluated the resistance of R. microplus populations from 15 dairy farms from nine municipalities in the Triângulo

Identification and distribution of Rhipicephalus microplus in selected high-cattle density districts in Uganda: signaling future demand for novel tick control approaches.

BACKGROUND: Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini, 1888), the Asian blue tick, is a highly invasive and adaptable ectoparasite. This tick species has successfully established itself in most regions of the world, with movement of cattle being a major driver for its spread. In the recent past, R. microplus ticks have been reported in three districts of Uganda. Information on its spread and distribution are vital in deepening our understanding of the ecological scenarios that lead to tick persistence and in the formulation of control strategies. This is especially important in the cattl

A novel Bayesian Latent Class Model (BLCM) evaluates multiple continuous and binary tests: A case study for Brucella abortus in dairy cattle.

Bovine brucellosis, primarily caused by Brucella abortus, severely affects both animal health and human well-being. Accurate diagnosis is crucial for designing informed control and prevention measures. Lacking a gold standard test makes it challenging to determine optimal cut-off values and evaluate the diagnostic performance of tests. In this study, we developed a novel Bayesian Latent Class Model that integrates both binary and continuous testing outcomes, incorporating additional fixed (parity) and random (farm) effects, to calibrate optimal cut-off values by maximizing Youden Index. We tes

Supplementing a Phytogenic Feed Additive Modulates the Risk of Subacute Rumen Acidosis, Rumen Fermentation and Systemic Inflammation in Cattle Fed Acidogenic Diets.

Feeding with high-concentrate diets increases the risk of subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA). This experiment was conducted to evaluate whether supplementing a phytogenic feed additive based on L-menthol, thymol, eugenol, mint oil (Mentha arvensis) and cloves powder (Syzygium aromaticum) (PHY) can amend the ruminal fermentation profile, modulate the risk of SARA and reduce inflammation in cattle. The experiment was designed as a crossover design with nine non-lactating Holstein cows, and was conducted in two experimental runs. In each run, cows were fed a 100% forage diet one week (wk 0), and we
