Neuropsychological functioning in opioid use disorder: A research synthesis and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Research has demonstrated that patients with opioid use disorders (OUD; including both opioid abuse and/or dependence) have poorer neuropsychological functioning compared to healthy controls; however, the pattern and robustness of the findings remain unknown. OBJECTIVES: This study meta-analyzed the results from previous research examining the neuropsychological deficits associated with opioids across 14 neurocognitive domains. METHOD: Articles comparing patients with OUD to healthy controls were selected based on detailed inclusion/exclusion criteria and variables of interest we

Measurement tools of autism syndrome severity and selected neurocognitive processes in individuals with ASD.

According to the latest theories explaining the pathomechanism and course of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), this disorder is characterized by abnormalities in the development of neurocognitive processes, such as executive functions, "theory of mind", cognitive style, or sensory integration processes. The structure of these processes is not homogenous, which has implications for measurement methodology. The type of indicators of the course and development level of neurocognitive processes analyzed by a researcher entails the need to choose an appropriate measurement tool. The behavioral indica

Olfactory and cognitive functioning in patients with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a complex syndrome characterized by chronic musculoskeletal pain. Previous research has found impaired olfactory function and cognitive deficits in patients with fibromyalgia. In non-clinical population (middle-aged and elderly populations) an association has been found between olfactory function and cognitive impairment. Therefore, olfactory impairment identification could be considered as a reliable and early marker predicting the decline of cognitive function in mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Nevertheless, the relationship between cog

Vascular Cognitive Impairment through the Looking Glass of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.

In the last years, there has been a significant growth in the literature exploiting transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with the aim at gaining further insights into the electrophysiological and neurochemical basis underlying vascular cognitive impairment (VCI). Overall, TMS points at enhanced brain cortical excitability and synaptic plasticity in VCI, especially in patients with overt dementia, and neurophysiological changes seem to correlate with disease process and progress. These findings have been interpreted as part of a glutamate-mediated compensatory effect in response to vascular

Cognitive development in preterm infants: multifaceted deficits reflect vulnerability of rigorous neurodevelopmental pathways.

Prematurity remains the major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality, with 15 million preterm births occurring worldwide in 2010. Infants born less than 37 weeks gestation are at high risk of abnormal neurodevelopmental outcomes, given that the central nervous system is extremely sensitive to an abnormal intra- and extra-uterine environment. Children born preterm have multiple neurodevelopmental sequelae involving dynamic and complex cognitive deficits. Former preterm infants have difficulty with each domain of cognition, including executive function, language, learning and memory, complex

Cognitive dysfunction and functional magnetic resonance imaging in systemic lupus erythematosus.

Cognitive dysfunction is a common aspect of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and is increasingly reported as a problem by patients. In many cases the exact cause is unclear. Limited correlations between specific autoantibodies or structural brain abnormalities and cognitive dysfunction in SLE have been reported. It may be that the most appropriate biomarkers have yet to be found. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a technique used in many other conditions and provides sensitive measures of brain functionality during cognitive tasks. It is now beginning to be employed in SLE stud

Do depression and anxiety mediate the relationship between meta-cognitive beliefs and psychological dimensions of auditory hallucinations and delusions in schizophrenia?

We investigated if depression and anxiety mediate the relationship between meta-cognitive beliefs and psychological dimensions of delusions and hallucinations in schizophrenia subjects (n=74). Depression, but not anxiety, mediated the relationship between certain dysfunctional meta-cognitive beliefs and psychological dimensions of delusions. Although direct effects between hallucination dimensions and certain meta-cognitive beliefs were found, anxiety and depression did not serve as mediators in this relationship. The results suggest a significant pathway from meta-cognition to delusions throu

Challenges of long-term nutrition intervention studies on cognition: discordance between observational and intervention studies of vitamin B12 and cognition.

Conducting long-term nutrition intervention studies on cognition can be challenging. The gaps in current methodology are addressed via a case study of the relationship between vitamin B(12) and cognition in people aged 60 and older. There is robust evidence from many observational studies, both cross-sectional and longitudinal, showing that a deficit of the vitamin is associated with poor or declining cognition in this age group, but supplementation of the vitamin in trials does not bring about improved cognition. The evidence from observational studies as well as clinical trials is reviewed h

Immediate and delayed effects of cognitive interventions in healthy elderly: a review of current literature and future directions.

BACKGROUND: Research on the potential effects of cognitive intervention in healthy elderly has been motivated by (1) the apparent effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients; (2) the face validity of bolstering skills eventually burdened by disease; (3) interest in low-cost/noninvasive methods of preventing or delaying onset of disease; (4) the epidemiologic research suggesting protective effects of educational attainment and lifelong participation in cognitively stimulating activities; (5) the burgeoning industry of brain training products and requisite medi

Effects of demographic and environmental variables on cognitive performance in a rural community sample of elderly people living in Southern Italy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The aim of our study was to understand how demographic and environmental factors may be associated with cognitive functions in a rural population of Southern Italy, with a very high percentage of elderly persons with little formal education. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From the population registry of San Marcellino (province of Caserta), out of 1089 persons aged over 60 years, a random sample of 300 residents received a door-to-door visit. Two hundred and twenty-six subjects were judged as not having significant cognitive impairment, on the basis of their personal history and

Pharmacotherapy of dementia with Lewy bodies.

The syndrome of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is characterised by the clinical triad of fluctuating cognitive impairment, recurrent visual hallucinations and spontaneous motor features of Parkinsonism. In an attempt to define DLB as a distinct clinical syndrome separate from Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) with dementia, a consensus workshop in 1995 established a new set of diagnostic criteria. Dementia that precedes or accompanies the onset of spontaneous (i.e., not neuroleptic-induced) Parkinsonism is termed DLB. In addition, fluctuations in alertness, cognition and f

Cognitive deficits in patients with daytime sleepiness.

A chief complaint of subjects with daytime sleepiness is the disturbance of cognitive functions like concentration, learning and memory. Since sleepiness interferes with the regulation of vigilance, one may assume that a disturbance of this basic dynamic variable causes deficiencies in information processing which in turn reduce the capacity for learning and memory. In two studies the time course of vigilance was measured by means of the critical flicker fusion (CFF) test in patients with narcolepsy or with an obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). The CFF test was applied at 15 min interval

Transdiagnostic behavioral and sociodemographic influences on the cognitive-adaptive functioning gap in neurodivergent children.

Adaptive functioning typically aligns with cognitive ability in the general population, but this relationship appears more complex in neurodivergent populations. Individuals with autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) frequently show a discrepancy between cognitive ability and adaptive functioning. However, the behavioral and sociodemographic factors associated with this cognitive-adaptive functioning gap remain unclear. Data were collected from the Province of Ontario Neurodevelopmental Disorders Network (POND) and included 902 partici

Cognitive Remediation in Bipolar (CRiB2): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial assessing efficacy and mechanisms of cognitive remediation therapy compared to treatment as usual.

BACKGROUND: A substantial proportion of people with bipolar disorder (BD) experience persistent cognitive difficulties associated with impairments in psychosocial functioning and a poorer disorder course. Emerging evidence suggests that cognitive remediation (CR), a psychological intervention with established efficacy in people with schizophrenia, can also benefit people with BD. Following a proof-of-concept trial showing that CR is feasible and potentially beneficial for people with BD, we are conducting an adequately powered trial in euthymic people with BD to 1) determine whether an individ

Oxytocin specifically participates in social memory encoding by exciting stellate neurons in the lateral entorhinal cortex.

INTRODUCTION: Oxytocin (OXT) has emerged as a key neuromodulator of social cognition, yet the precise neural circuits underlying its role in social memory remain poorly defined. In this study, we identify a specific mechanism by which OXT regulates social memory encoding through the lateral entorhinal cortex (LEC), a critical gateway to the hippocampus. METHODS: Using whole-cell patch-clamp recordings in mouse brain slices, we examined the effects of OXT on stellate neurons in the superficial layers of the LEC. Behavioral analyses were performed to determine the role of intra-LEC OXT signalin

Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761 in patients with dementia and a history of cerebral infarction-meta-analysis of pooled data from randomised clinical trials.

INTRODUCTION: Ginkgo biloba leaf extracts belong to the most popular herbal medicines for the treatment of neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) or stroke. EGb 761, a proprietary ginkgo leaf extract, has been shown to improve brain cell energy supply, to enhance neurogenesis and neuroplasticity, to decrease blood viscosity and improve brain perfusion. Thereby it improves cognitive performance, neuropsychiatric symptoms and activities of daily living in patients with dementia or mild cognitive impairment. It has further been shown to be beneficial for patients after ischaem

Identification of an Angiotensin-(1-7)-Producing fusion protein in the brain of transgenic rats Reveals a hypotensive effect mediated through modulation of the GABA-nNOS-NO pathway and highlighting Astrocyte-Neuron crosstalk.

This study explores the anatomical distribution of Angiotensin-(Ang)-(1-7) fusion protein within the central nervous system of the novel transgenic rat model (TG7371). The Ang-(1-7)/Mas pathway of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) plays a key role in cardiovascular regulation and influences higher brain functions, including cognition and emotion. TG7371 expresses a transgenic Ang-(1-7)-producing fusion protein which resulted in a hypotensive phenotype. Here, we assessed the expression of Ang-(1-7) fusion mRNA and protein in primary cortical cells from neonates and identified their distributio

Tau pathology in epilepsy: emerging mechanisms and translational opportunities.

The onset of epilepsy in adulthood occurs most commonly after 55 years of age. Given the ageing global population, this disorder represents an increasing burden on healthcare and society. The bidirectional link between epilepsy and dementia is a focus of intense research with underlying tau pathology highlighted as a potential mechanistic link. In this review, we examine the evidence for tau-related neurodegenerative processes in epilepsy beginning with how changes in biochemical and structural properties of the tau protein can lead to abnormal phosphorylation and pathological aggregation. We
