Comparison of five percutaneous pinning methods for unstable extra-articular distal radius fractures: A mechanical study using sawbones.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to mechanically compare five different extra-focal bi-cortical pin configurations (using two and three pins) employed for fixation of a simulated unstable extra-articular distal radius fracture with dorsal comminution using a sawbone model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This in vitro mechanical study was conducted between June 2019 and July 2019. A standard fracture model (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen [AO] type 23-A3.3) was created using a fourth generation composite artificial radius bone. Five groups with two- and three-pin configurations were tested unde

Role of sphingolipid metabolism signaling in a novel mouse model of renal osteodystrophy based on transcriptomic approach.

BACKGROUND: Renal osteodystrophy (ROD) is a skeletal pathology associated with chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) that is characterized by aberrant bone mineralization and remodeling. ROD increases the risk of fracture and mortality in CKD patients. The underlying mechanisms of ROD remain elusive, partially due to the absence of an appropriate animal model. To address this gap, we established a stable mouse model of ROD using an optimized adenine-enriched diet and conducted exploratory analyses through ribonucleic acid sequencing (RNA-seq). METHODS: Eight-week-old male

Efficacy of NHP66 Bioactive Cage on Patients with Cervical Spine Injury in Short-Track Speed Skating.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Short-track speed skating (STSS) is an extreme sport in pursuit of extreme speed and explosive force. In such a sport, once athletes fall down, they are susceptible to serious cervical spine injury (CSI) under the inertia of high-velocity movement. Nanohydroxyapatite/polyamide 66 (NHP66) bioactive cage is a high-tech product of nanotechnology in the medical field in recent years. With a structure similar to that of human cortical bone, NHP66 bioactive cage has extremely high toughness and strength, which tailors to the needs of STSS. OBJECTIVE: This study mainly analyzed the thera…

"Trabecular Bone Score" (TBS): an indirect measure of bone micro-architecture in postmenopausal patients with primary hyperparathyroidism.

BACKGROUND: Patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) generally show reduced bone mineral density (BMD) at cortical sites with relatively preserved trabecular bone. However, the increased fracture risk at all skeletal sites suggests that areal BMD probably is not effective in capturing all the determinants of bone strength. "Trabecular Bone Score" (TBS) has been recently proposed as an indirect measure of bone micro-architecture. Our study was aimed to investigate TBS in patients with PHPT. METHODS: Seventy-three Caucasian postmenopausal women with PHPT and 74 age-matched healthy women

Prevalence and characterization of renal tubular acidosis in patients with osteopenia and osteoporosis and in non-porotic controls.

BACKGROUND: Chronic metabolic acidosis may increase alkali mobilization from the bone and thus promote the development of osteoporosis. The objective of the current study was to compare urinary acidification in patients with reduced bone mineral content with that in control subjects with normal bone density. METHODS: Forty-six subjects (41 females, 5 males) with osteopenia or osteoporosis were studied. In none of the subjects were overt metabolic acidosis, derangement of potassium homeostasis, or renal insufficiency present. Distal tubular acidification was studied by means of oral ammonium c

Biomechanical evaluation of a cemented femoral stem for canine total hip replacement across two breeds.

Cemented total hip replacement (THR) remains an established procedure for restoring hip joint function in dogs with degenerative or traumatic coxofemoral disease; however, limited evidence exists regarding the mechanical integrity and load-transfer characteristics of cemented femoral stem constructs within native canine femora. This study critically evaluated the biomechanical performance of a novel modular cemented femoral stem using cadaveric femora from German Shepherd Dogs (GSDs) and Labrador Retrievers (LABs), emphasizing axial, bending, and torsional behaviors in correlation with radiogr

Accuracy comparison between active robot and freehand techniques in modified mid-segment-first extraction of impacted mandibular third molars: an in vitro study.

This study compared the precision of cortical-window osteotomy and tooth sectioning performed with an active robotic system versus conventional freehand techniques during the modified mid-segment-first (MMSF) extraction of impacted mandibular third molars (M3Ms). The feasibility of applying active robotic technology to alveolar surgery was also assessed. Standardized mandibular replicas containing fully impacted horizontal M3Ms (n = 18 per group) were allocated into two groups: an active robot-assisted group (ARG) and a freehand group (FHG). For all specimens, preoperative CBCT scans were merg

Suppression of astrocyte BMP signaling improves molecular signatures and functional deficits in a fragile X syndrome mouse model.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a monogenic neurodevelopmental disorder with molecular, neuroanatomical, and behavioral changes. In FXS, astrocytes express dysregulated gene and protein networks, therefore identifying upstream pathways mediating astrocyte changes may provide a point of intervention. We focus on the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) pathway, which is upregulated in FXS astrocytes. We generated a conditional KO (cKO) of Smad4 in astrocytes to suppress BMP signaling, finding that this lessens audiogenic seizure severity in male FXS mice. We performed in vivo transcriptomic and proteom

First-trimester fetal neurosonography.

First-trimester ultrasound has evolved beyond basic screening to permit structured neurosonographic assessment of the developing fetal brain. Historically, detailed evaluation of intracranial anatomy was deferred to the mid-trimester, based on assumptions regarding developmental maturity and technical limitations. However, advances in imaging technology, improved understanding of early neuroembryology, and refinement of standardized scanning planes have shifted this paradigm. Major structural anomalies that disrupt early cranial morphology, including acrania-exencephaly sequence, holoprosencep

Radiographic evolution of a dentigerous cyst associated with a deeply impacted mandibular first molar in a pediatric patient: a CBCT-based longitudinal case report with minimal-visit orthodontic management.

A deeply impacted mandibular first molar associated with a dentigerous cyst is an uncommon clinical presentation, particularly in pediatric patients. This case report describes a 9-year-old boy who presented with delayed eruption of the mandibular right first molar. Panoramic radiography revealed a well-defined unilocular radiolucent lesion associated with a deeply impacted tooth, while cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) demonstrated buccolingual cortical expansion and thinning, displacement of the adjacent second molar germ, and close proximity to the inferior alveolar canal. Based on clini
