Central nervous system diseases include brain or spinal cord impairments and may result in movement disorders almost always manifested by paralyzed muscles with preserved innervations and therefore susceptible to be activated by electrical stimulation. Functional electrical stimulation (FES)-assisted cycling is an approach mainly used for rehabilitation purposes contributing, among other effects, to restore muscle trophism. FES-assisted cycling has also been adapted for mobile devices adding a leisure and recreational benefit to the physical training. In October 2016, our teams (Freewheels and

We study external electrical perturbations and their responses in the brain dynamic network of the Caenorhabditis elegans soil worm, given by the connectome of its large somatic nervous system. Our analysis is inspired by a realistic experiment where one stimulates externally specific parts of the brain and studies the persistent neural activity triggered in other cortical regions. In this work, we perturb groups of neurons that form communities, identified by the walktrap community detection method, by trains of stereotypical electrical Poissonian impulses and study the propagation of neural

Electrode mounts are being developed to improve electrical stimulation and recording. Some are tight-fitting, or even re-shape the nervous structure they interact with, for a more selective, fascicular, access. If these are to be successfully used chronically with human nerve roots, we need to know more about the possible damage caused by the long-term entrapment and possible compression of the roots following electrode implantation. As there are, to date, no such data published, this paper presents a review of the relevant literature on alternative causes of nerve root compression, and a disc

Mechanomyography (MMG) measures both muscular contraction and stretching activities and can be used as feedback in the control of neuroprostheses with Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES). In this study we evaluated the correlation between MMG features and passive knee angular movement of rectus femoris and vastus lateralis muscles acquired from healthy volunteers (HV) and spinal cord injured volunteers (SCIV). Twelve HV and thirteen SCIV were submitted to passive and FES elicited knee extensions and in each extension, eleven windows of analysis with 0.5s length were inspected. Temporal (RM

Recently, we found that mitragynine, a major constituent of Mitragyna speciosa, has an opioid agonistic activity, but its weak potency could not explain the opium-like effect of this plant. In the present study, bioassay-guided fractionation of the crude extract of the leaves of M. speciosa was carried out to search for potent opioid agonists other than mitragynine. Opioid agonistic activities were evaluated using twitch contraction induced by electrical stimulation in guinea-pig ileum. The crude extract of M. speciosa inhibited the twitch contraction in a concentration-dependent manner. The i

Previously, we reported that Ca(2+) influx through nicotinic acetylcholine (ACh) receptors (nAChRs) activates a fulfenamic acid (FFA)-sensitive inward current, presumably a Ca(2+)-activated nonselective cation current (I(CAN)), in mesencephalic dopamine (DA) neurons. This current exhibited a negative slope conductance in the voltage range between -80 and -40mV and its activation led to a dramatic change in the responses to a transient application of glutamate, from single spikes to burst discharges. In this study, to examine the effect of activation of the FFA-sensitive current on EPSPs, we ap

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) enables restoration of movement in individuals with spinal cord injury. FES-based devices use electric current pulses to stimulate and excite the intact peripheral nerves. They produce muscle contractions, generate joint torques, and thus, joint movements. Since the underlying neuromuscular-skeletal system is highly nonlinear and time-varying, feedback control is necessary for accurate control of the generated movement. However, classical feedback/closed-loop control algorithms have so far failed to provide satisfactory performance and were not able to g

The objective of this study was to investigate in vitro abomasal motility in dairy cows diagnosed with displaced abomasum. Longitudinal muscle myenteric plexus preparations originating from the abomasal antrum of control cows, and cows diagnosed with left displaced abomasum (LDA), right displaced abomasum (RDA) or abomasal volvulus (AV) were used. In control preparations electrical field stimulation evoked an immediate cholinergic contractile response exceeding amplitude of basal contractions by 60%. In contrast, contractile activity was significantly inhibited during electrical stimulation in

We examined the effects of an aconitine-like compound, TJN-505 (1alpha-16beta-dimethoxy-20-ethyl-14alpha-(4-methox ybenzoyloxy)-aconitan-8,13-diol hydrochloride), on canine arrhythmias provoked by digitalis, two-stage coronary ligation, adrenaline, programmed electrical stimulation, or aconitine. TJN-505 (2-2.5 mg/kg i.v.) suppressed digitalis-, two-stage coronary ligation- and adrenaline-induced ventricular arrhythmias. The antiarrhythmic plasma concentrations (IC50) of TJN-505 for these arrhythmia models were 1.26, 0.94 and 1.31 microg/ml, respectively. TJN-505 (2 mg/kg i.v. followed by the

We investigated the effects of epithelial cells on excitatory cholinergic neurotransmission in dog trachea, to shed more light on the role of airway epithelial cells in regulating airway responsiveness. Airway epithelial cells were prepared by an enzymatic dissociation of the tracheal mucosa using protease-free collagenase. Tracheal smooth muscle contractions evoked by electrical field stimulation (EFS) or acetylcholine (ACh) were measured before and after the application of epithelial cells. Isolated and dispersed epithelial cells (3 x 10(5) cells/ml) suppressed the amplitude of the twitch-li

1. In urethane or ketamine-anaesthetized rats, salivary secretion was observed when local brain sites or trunk skin were stimulated thermally or electrically. 2. Salivary secretion was facilitated by bilateral local brain warming. Sensitive sites were restricted to the preoptic area and anterior hypothalamus, but in a region distinct from a previously reported sensitive site for producing saliva-spreading behaviour. 3. Unilateral warming of the preoptic area produced greater salivary secretion from the ipsilateral submandibular/sublingual salivary glands than from the contralateral glands. Ele

Under general anaesthesia, 5 dogs underwent sectioning of the right recurrent nerve followed by implantation of the phrenic nerve into the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle. Some 6-7 months later the dogs were sacrificed after registration of vocal cord motility. Still photographs and movie film of the larynx were taken during quiet and forced respiration and at electrical stimulation of the implanted phrenic nerve. The PCA and vocal muscles were removed for histochemical studies. We found practically no abductory movement of the vocal cord on the reinnervated side, either during quiet or

Electromyographic potentials of fasciculations were studied in ten patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The EMG recordings were made from the extensor digitorum brevis muscle. The EMG recording was so selective that only one motor unit potential appeared on maximal voluntary effort and on supramaximal electrical stimulation of the peroneal nerve. In a series of fasciculations, the shapes of the EMG potentials varied, while in a series of voluntary twitch activations of electrical nerve stimulations the EMG potentials were mainly constant. Fasciculations were followed by antidromi

Earlier studies have shown that the hippocampal rhythmical slow activity (RSA or theta) which may occur during behavioral immobility (IRSA) is abolished by systemically administered atropine (is atropine-sensitive), although the RSA which accompanies movements, such as walking, running or swimming (MRSA) is atropine-resistant. This study was designed to manipulate brain cholinergic activity in ways other than through the use of postsynaptic receptor antagonists, and to determine the effects of such manipulations on IRSA and MRSA. The IRSA elicited by electrical stimulation of the reticular for

Clinical evidence indicates that phenothiazines, specifically chlorpromazine (CPZ), used extensively in the treatment of patients with mental and/or neurologic disorders produce an ileus characterized by pseudoobstruction with an extended barium transit time of eight to ten days. Postoperatively, these patients have a protracted ileus, lasting from ten to fourteen days. In our present study we investigated the mechanism of action by which phenothiazines block gastrointestinal tract function as well as the possible reversal of this effect by pharmacologic agents. Guinea pigs were injected intra

The distribution of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor subunits such as GABAAR-gamma 1 and GABAAR-gamma 2, and alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) type receptor subunits such as GluR-1, GluR-2/3 and GluR-4, and N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) type subunits such as NR1 were investigated by immunocytochemistry. Furthermore, the roles of these amino acids, GABA and glutamate, on salivation were analyzed in the rat submandibular and sublingual glands. Some similarities were observed in the distribution patterns of GABAA type receptors and AMPA receptors. In the sub

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent and debilitating illness. While standard treatment with pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy may be effective, approximately 20 to 30% of patients remain symptomatic. These individuals experience depression, anxiety, and elevated rates of suicide. For treatment-resistant patients, there is a growing interest in the use of neuromodulation therapies, including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and deep brain stimulation (DBS). We conducted a systematic review on the use of neuromodulation str

OBJECT: The authors of previous studies have demonstrated that local adenosine efflux may contribute to the therapeutic mechanism of action of thalamic deep brain stimulation (DBS) for essential tremor. Real-time monitoring of the neurochemical output of DBS-targeted regions may thus advance functional neurosurgical procedures by identifying candidate neurotransmitters and neuromodulators involved in the physiological effects of DBS. This would in turn permit the development of a method of chemically guided placement of DBS electrodes in vivo. Designed in compliance with FDA-recognized standar

Over the past decade, piezoelectric biomaterials have emerged as powerful platforms for tissue repair and regeneration by enabling self-generated, minimally invasive bioelectric stimulation. Among them, skin wound healing has become a prominent area of research due to the tissue's accessibility and clinical relevance. Specifically, the microcurrents powered by piezoelectric biomaterials closely mimic the endogenous electrical cues present in healthy skin. These bioelectrical signals regulate multiple stages of wound healing, including cell migration and proliferation, angiogenesis, extracellul…

Exudate management and cell activity enhancement are vital to complicated wound healing. However, current exudate management dressings indiscriminately remove exudate, which is detrimental to cell activity enhancement. Herein, a novel class of electroactive bilayer (cMO/PVA) dressing is developed by constructing manganese oxide nanoneedle-clusters decorated commercial carbon cloth (MO), in situ casting polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel, and finally charging. Benefitting from the hierarchical nanoneedle-cluster structure of MO, abundant active sites are sufficiently exposed to achieve high area-
