Functional electrical stimulation as a tool to restore motor control after spinal cord injury: translation to clinical practice.

INTRODUCTION: Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is a therapeutic tool that may augment motor recovery after spinal cord injury/disease (SCI). It involves applying an electrical current to muscles and/or peripheral nerves to facilitate functional movements, such as walking and reaching. Despite the potential therapeutic benefits of FES, and the considerable investment into its research and development, FES is not widely used in clinical practice. AREAS COVERED: In this narrative review, we examine this research-to-practice gap. PubMed and Google Scholar were searched using keywords relat

Conductive hydrogel combined with electrical stimulation remodels the microenvironment for nerve regeneration to promote spinal cord injury repair.

The secondary inflammatory response and disruption of electrical signaling following spinal cord injury (SCI) present significant challenges to neurological recovery. Modulating the inflammatory microenvironment and reconstructing the spinal cord's electrophysiological network are essential for effective SCI repair. To address these challenges, we designed a biomimetic 3D soft scaffold composed of phenylboronic acid-modified sodium alginate(Alg-PBA), dopamine-modified methacrylated gelatin(GelMA-DA), and Zn@EGCG modified MXene. This scaffold demonstrated excellent injectability, with an elasti

Optimal integration of photovoltaic sources and capacitor banks considering irradiance, temperature, and load changes in electric distribution system.

This paper introduces the Efficient Metaheuristic BitTorrent (EM-BT) algorithm, aimed at optimizing the placement and sizing of photovoltaic renewable energy sources (PVRES) and capacitor banks (CBs) in electric distribution networks. The main goal is to minimize energy losses and enhance voltage stability over 24 h, taking into account varying load profiles, solar irradiance, and temperature effects. The algorithm is rigorously tested on standard distribution networks, including the IEEE 33, IEEE 69, and ZB-ALG-Hassi Sida 157-bus systems. The results reveal that EM-BT outperforms established

Introducing electric spring in the voltage frequency regulation of a multi area multi source integrated power system network.

The present work demonstrates the application of an electric spring in a multi-source interconnected power system in which coordinated control of frequency and voltage loop is investigated. A two-area power system is considered with non-linearity for the thermal power system, such as generation rate constraint and governor dead band, so that the developed model is realistic. A novel cascade controller, namely a two-degree-of-freedom proportional-integral-derivative controller cascaded with a proportional-integral-derivative controller (2DOFPID-PID), is utilized for the first time for reducing

A dual switched DC-DC converter with high gain for low-voltage fuel cell stack electric vehicles.

A high-gain, boost-derived, non-isolated DC-DC converter employing dual switches is introduced to supply the 400 V DC link bus voltage required for fuel cell vehicles, featuring a minimal number of passive components and diodes. Additional features of a DC-DC converter employed in fuel cell electric vehicles include minimal input current ripple, attenuated inrush currents, lowered voltage stress, and minimized reverse recovery losses, all contributing to a reduction in the converter's size and weight. The proposed converter achieves the aforementioned characteristics that conventional converte

Dimensionality-reduced multi-objective framework for resilient power systems with electric vehicles and hydrogen-based energy storage.

Modern power systems are becoming increasingly complex and vulnerable, raising concerns about their ability to withstand disruptive events. As a result, resilience has become a key consideration in system planning and operation. This paper proposes a resilience-oriented framework that coordinates distributed energy resources (DERs) with hydrogen-based energy storage (HESS). The framework also integrates planning for transmission lines, electric vehicles (EVs), and flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) to enhance overall system performance. The problem is formulated as a multi-objective opti
