Prenatal paternal anxiety symptoms predict child DHEA levels and internalizing symptoms during adrenarche.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined (1) whether measures of paternal anxious and depressive symptoms collected prenatally and during a follow-up assessment when the child was in middle childhood, predict child neuroendocrine outcomes, and (2) whether neuroendocrine outcomes are intermediate factors between paternal mental health and child cognitive/behavioral outcomes. Middle childhood coincides with increased autonomy as the child transitions into grade school, and with adrenarche, as the maturing adrenal gland increases secretion of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfated metabolite (DH

The incidence and predictors of depressive and anxiety symptoms in older adults with vision impairment: a longitudinal prospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: Depression and anxiety are highly prevalent in older adults with vision impairment. Because symptoms of depression and anxiety appear to fluctuate, it is important to identify patients who are at risk of developing these symptoms for early diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the incidence of subthreshold depression and anxiety, and to investigate predictors of developing symptoms of depression and anxiety in older adults with vision impairment who had no subthreshold depression or anxiety at baseline. METHODS: A longitudinal prospective cohort s

Age- and Gender-Normalized Coronary Incidence and Mortality Risks in Primary and Secondary Prevention.

Epidemiologic differences in ischemic heart disease incidence between women and men remain largely unexplained. The reasons of women's "protection" against coronary artery disease (CAD) are not still clear. However, there are subsets more likely to die of a first myocardial infarction. The purpose of this review is to underline different treatment strategies between genders and describe the role of classical and novel factors defined to evaluate CAD risk and mortality, aimed at assessing applicability and relevance for primary and secondary prevention. Women and men present different age-relat

Epidemiologic approaches to the study of toxic epidermal necrolysis.

The appropriate epidemiologic strategy for studying the etiology of toxic epidermal necrolysis is determined by the characteristics of the disease, particularly its rarity and the fact that it is caused by numerous drugs. Although information about drugs as risk factors can in principal be obtained from case reports and experimental studies, the former are subject to bias and the latter are impractical because toxic epidermal necrolysis is so rare. Cohort studies are also impractical because of the rarity of the outcome. An automated database, even if based on a large population, can only yiel

A large kindred with 17q-linked breast and ovarian cancer: genetic, phenotypic, and genealogical analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mutation of a specific, but as yet unidentified, gene BRCA1 on chromosome 17q results in increased susceptibility to breast and ovarian cancer. It is important to know the effects of this gene in terms of the age-specific risks of these cancers and the potential interaction of this gene with other known risk factors. PURPOSE: We performed detailed studies on a large multigenerational family, in which there is known 17q-linked breast and ovarian cancer, in order to characterize the effects of the BRCA1 mutation on development of breast and ovarian cancer. METHODS: Data from the Ut

The associations between alcohol intake and cardiometabolic risk in African-origin adults spanning the epidemiologic transition.

BACKGROUND: Cardiometabolic (CM) risk affects approximately 25% of adults globally, and is diagnosed by meeting 3 out of 5 of the following CM risk factors: elevated blood pressure, high triglycerides, elevated blood sugar, low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) level, and abdominal obesity. Adults with CM risk are approximately 22% more likely to have higher mortality rates, and alcohol consumption may be associated with higher CM risk. While previous studies have investigated this potential connection, the majority of them did not include African-origin adults. Therefore, the study aimed to expl

Epidemiology of Large Bowel Carcinoid Tumors in the USA: A Population-Based National Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Prior studies have shown that about 90% of all carcinoid tumors occur in the GI tract. However, epidemiological studies of these tumors have been limited by small sample size. Our aim was to obtain a more robust epidemiologic survey of large bowel carcinoids (LBC), using population-based data in order to more accurately identify risk factors for these tumors. METHODS: We used a commercial database (Explorys Inc, Cleveland, OH) which includes electronic health record data from 26 major integrated US healthcare systems. We identified all patients aged 18 and older who were

Echinococcosis on the Tibetan Plateau: prevalence and risk factors for cystic and alveolar echinococcosis in Tibetan populations in Qinghai Province, China.

Infections by larval stages of tapeworms of the genus Echinococcus (echinococcosis or hydatid disease) are zoonotic infections of major public health importance throughout much of the world. Humans become infected through accidental ingestion of eggs passed in faeces of canid definitive hosts. Tibetan populations of China have some of the highest documented levels of infections by both Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis, the causes of cystic and alveolar echinococcosis, respectively. In this study we measured the prevalence of cystic (CE) and alveolar (AE) echinococcosis disease in

[Epidemiologic and clinico-pathologic study on senile dementia in a Japanese community, Hisayama].

To elucidate a definite prevalence of dementia and its risk factors in the senescence, 887 subjects aged 65 years or over of Hisayama residents (94.6% of the whole population in the same age-range) were examined from May to December, 1985, as to whether he or she has suffered dementia. Karasawa's "Clinical criteria for the severity of dementia", Hasegawa's Dementia Scale and Hachinski's ischemic score were used as a procedure to identify demented persons. Out of 887 examined, 59 subjects were diagnosed to have had dementia (6.7%) with female to male ratio being 1.2. The prevalence rates of dem

Risk factors for nosocomial pneumonia in the elderly.

PURPOSE: Pneumonia is now the second most frequent hospital-acquired infection in acute-care facilities, and recent studies indicate that the incidence rate for nosocomial pneumonia in long-term-care facilities is of similar magnitude. The mortality rate is high, especially in the elderly. With prevention of this complication as an overall priority, this study was designed to determine the risk factors associated with nosocomial pneumonia in the elderly in both acute-care and long-term-care settings. PATIENTS AND METHODS: An epidemiologic case-control study was undertaken to compare patients
