Adaptation and feasibility of a group intervention for parents after the loss of a co-parent to cancer: a mixed-methods study protocol.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: After the loss of a parent, families with minor children face psychosocial stressors. The bereaved parent has to deal with their own grief and at the same time support the children. Providing professional support to the parents can improve well-being of parents, children and the family as a whole. However, such manualised interventions are missing for the German context. This study aims to translate and culturally adapt the parent group 'Resilient Parenting for Bereaved Families' (RPBF) of the Family Bereavement Program for the German context specifically for loss

Pharmacoproteomics in the development of personalised medicine in Age-related Macular Degeneration (PHARPRO-AMD) study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss among people over 55 years of age globally, being neovascular AMD (nAMD) its most aggressive form. Its treatment consists of the use of drugs that block vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF). Proteomics may allow the identification of differentially expressed proteins between responders and non-responders to each anti-VEGF drug. Thus, the objective of Pharmacoproteomics in the development of personalised medicine in Age-related Macular Degeneration (PHARPRO-AMD) is to find new proteom

Randomised controlled trial with parallel process evaluation and health economic analysis to evaluate a nutritional management intervention, OptiCALS, for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating illness that leads to muscle weakness and death usually within around 3 years of diagnosis. People with ALS (pwALS) often lose weight due to raised energy requirements and symptoms of the disease presenting significant challenges to taking adequate oral diet, with those who lose more weight being at a greater chance of earlier death. There is also some evidence to suggest that a higher calorie diet may benefit the disease course in pwALS, but further research is needed. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Two armed, parallel group, superior

Analgesia and sedative effects of a fixed nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture on supragingival scaling patients: a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Pain during supragingival scaling is often uncomfortable for patients, causing varying degrees of fear and anxiety, thus affecting patient comfort and compliance during treatment and reducing the effectiveness of treatment. Nitrous oxide/oxygen mixtures have the advantages of analgesic and sedative effects and are well tolerated. The purpose of this study is to explore the safety and effectiveness of a fixed inhaled nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture analgesia technology in the process of supragingival scaling and to provide empirical evidence for patients to reduce pain and reduce anx

Noradrenaline for progressive supranuclear palsy syndromes (NORAPS): a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover Phase IIb clinical trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of oral atomoxetine for treating cognitive and behavioural changes in people with progressive supranuclear palsy syndromes in the UK.

INTRODUCTION: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a devastating neurodegenerative disease characterised by cognitive, behavioural and motor problems. Motor symptoms are highly disabling, while cognitive and behavioural changes have a major impact on carer burden, quality of life and prognosis. Apathy and impulsivity are very common, often coexistent in PSP, and negatively predict survival. In preclinical models and other diseases, apathy and impulsivity are associated with noradrenergic deficits, which can be severe in PSP. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Noradrenaline for Progressive Supranuclear

NIFTy: near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) imaging to prevent postsurgical hypoparathyroidism (PoSH) after thyroid surgery-a phase II/III pragmatic, multicentre randomised controlled trial protocol in patients undergoing a total or completion thyroidectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Postsurgical hypoparathyroidism (PoSH) is an iatrogenic condition that occurs as a complication of several different procedures with thyroid surgery being the most common. PoSH has significant short- and long-term morbidities. The volume of thyroid surgery is increasing, and PoSH is therefore likely to increase. Some studies have shown promising results using near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) imaging in reducing the risk of PoSH which has the potential to significantly reduce morbidity and costs associated with monitoring and treatment. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: NIFTy is an unblinde

Assessing the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a smart home emergency call system: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial in Germany.

INTRODUCTION: Falls can lead to serious health-related consequences in the older population. If an emergency occurs within the home environment of an older person living alone, the initiation of emergency care can be delayed, leading to even worse outcomes for this population. Smart home emergency call systems (HECSs) can detect falls and automatically trigger an emergency alarm, potentially reducing time to emergency care and improving outcomes. The INES (Intelligentes NotfallErkennungsSystem-smart emergency detection system) study is a prospective randomised controlled trial conducted in thr

Aerobic dance during chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer with cognitive impairment (ADANC): protocol for an assessor-blinded randomised clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Therapeutic exercise has been used to improve cancer-related dysfunction. Recent studies suggest that exercise after chemotherapy can improve cancer-related cognitive impairment. However, the effect of exercise during chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer remains unclear. Aerobic dance is a comprehensive form of aerobic exercise which may be more easily accepted by female patients. The Aerobic Dance Against NeuroCognitive decline (ADANC) trial is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of aerobic dance during chemotherapy on breast cancer-related cognitive impairment. It aim

LymphSens study: the enigma of subjective lymphoedema - how often and why do patients report lymphoedema after breast cancer treatment without an objective measurable swelling? The role of lymphatic and sensory processing problems: a protocol for a multicentre prospective longitudinal study.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer-related lymphoedema (BCRL) at the arm and/or trunk/breast is a highly feared complication following breast cancer treatment and can be objectified using the state-of-the-art criteria based on volume, extracellular water ratio or skin thickness measurements. Although the incidence of objective BCRL is decreasing due to advances in breast cancer treatment, many patients report a sensation of swelling without the presence of objective BCRL, referred to as subjective BCRL. As little is known about the prevalence and the transitions between different BCRL states (no-subj

Perioperative Oral decontamination and ImmunoNuTrition (POINT) to prevent postoperative pulmonary complications in elderly patients scheduled for elective non-cardiac surgeries: protocol for a multicentre, randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Elderly patients are known to be vulnerable to postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs), especially pneumonia. Apart from elder age, preoperative pulmonary diseases, anaemia, malnutrition, dysphagia and frailty may all be contributing factors to PPCs. Poor oral hygiene is a risk factor for PPC as well, as oropharyngeal microflora might be introduced to the lower respiratory tract following endotracheal intubation for general anaesthesia during surgery. Immune regulation, nutrition supplementation and improvement of oropharyngeal microflora might regulate immune and stress res

Effects on recurrence and quAlity-of-life of iliac vein Stenting angioplasTy for patients with Varicose veins combined with severE Iliac veiN compression: a protocol for a prospective, multicentre, randomised clinical trial (EAST-VEIN trial).

INTRODUCTION: Both varicose veins (VV) and iliac vein compression syndrome (IVCS) can cause skin damage and functional impairment in the lower extremities, and these issues often coexist. However, the question of whether IVCS exacerbates VV progression and leads to differences in the surgical outcomes of therapy for VV remains unanswered. Therefore, no high-level evidence-based medical data is available to support the concomitant use of iliac vein stenting in patients with VV and severe IVCS, and treatment protocols vary significantly among different centres. This study will investigate the ef

Gene therapy for disorders of sex development: current applications and future challenges.

Disorders of sex development (DSD) represent a spectrum of congenital conditions where discrepancies exist between chromosomal, gonadal, or anatomical sex. Recent advances in genomic diagnostics and gene-editing technologies have enabled significant progress in the identification of pathogenic variants and the exploration of targeted therapeutic strategies. This review systematically examines the roles of key sex-determining genes-including SRY, SOX9, NR5A1, WT1, FOXL2, and AR-in various DSD subtypes. It further elaborates on gene therapy strategies targeting these loci through the use of CRIS

Prospective study on breastfeeding, lipid profile and cardiovascular risk markers in women with familial hypercholesterolaemia: study protocol for the FH-FEMINA study.

INTRODUCTION: Early and lifelong treatment is essential in patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) due to genetically elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) from the first years of life. In women with FH, lipid-lowering treatment is interrupted during childbearing years due to contraindication of the medication during conception, pregnancy and breastfeeding. However, little is known about the impact of breastfeeding on lipid profile and other risk markers for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in women with FH compared with women without hypercholesterolaemi

Continuous non-invasive electrophysiological monitoring in high-risk pregnancies: study protocol of a cohort intervention random sampling study in a tertiary obstetrical care centre in the Netherlands (NIEM-O study).

INTRODUCTION: Women with high-risk pregnancies (eg, pre-eclampsia, imminent preterm birth) are often hospitalised due to the need for foetal and maternal monitoring. They are monitored for 30-45 min up to three times a day with conventional cardiotocography (CTG). In the meantime, they reside at the hospital, but the foetal status is not monitored. Continuous foetal monitoring is currently not recommended using CTG, due to the potential temperature rise from consistent exposure to ultrasound waves. For safe 24/7 monitoring, newly developed devices using non-invasive electrophysiological cardio
