Perineal Benign Symmetric Lipomatosis in a Female Patient: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Benign symmetric lipomatosis (BSL), also known as Madelung's disease, is a rare disease generally characterized by fat deposits painlessly and symmetrically distributed in the body. In former studies, the incidence of BSL is highest in male patients and more frequent in the Mediterranean area. Asian females seem to be rarely affected. BSL often occurs in the neck or upper-back of patients, and is related to various metabolic disorders. Unusual clinical appearances may add difficulties in diagnosis. CASE REPORT In this report, we present a case of BSL in a 33-year-old woman's perinea

Effects of Monacolin K in Nondiabetic Patients with NAFLD: A Pilot Study.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common chronic liver condition with significant risk of progression to steatohepatitis and cirrhosis. Therapeutic strategies in NAFLD include lifestyle changes mainly related to dietary interventions and use of drugs or nutritional components that could improve plasma lipid profiles and insulin sensitivity and decrease the local inflammatory response. In this study, we tested the effects of monacolin K, an inhibitor of HMCoA reductase. In a prospective, uncontrolled, open study, we treated 24 patients with NAFLD and mild hypercholesterolemia with

Effects of Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) on Growth and Body Composition Compared to Constitutionally Small Infants.

(1) Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is associated with multiple morbidities including growth restriction and impaired neurodevelopment. Small for gestational age (SGA) is defined as a birth weight <10th percentile, regardless of the etiology. The term is commonly used as a proxy for IUGR, but it may represent a healthy constitutionally small infant. Differentiating between IUGR and constitutionally small infants is essential for the nutritional management. (2) Infants born at <37 weeks of gestation between 2017 and 2022, who underwent body composition measurement (FFM: fat-free mass; FM

Update on the Etiology, Assessment, and Management of COPD Cachexia: Considerations for the Clinician.

Cachexia is a commonly observed but frequently neglected extra-pulmonary manifestation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Cachexia is a multifactorial syndrome characterized by severe loss of body weight, muscle, and fat, as well as increased protein catabolism. COPD cachexia places a high burden on patients (eg, increased mortality risk and disease burden, reduced exercise capacity and quality of life) and the healthcare system (eg, increased number, length, and cost of hospitalizations). The etiology of COPD cachexia involves a complex interplay of non-modifiable

Chronic everolimus treatment of high-fat diet mice leads to a reduction in obesity but impaired glucose tolerance.

Everolimus, which inhibits mTOR kinase activity and is clinically used in graft rejection treatment, may have a two-sided influence on metabolic syndrome; its role in obesity and hyperglycemic in animals and humans, however, has been explored insufficiently. This study further determined how continual everolimus treatment affects glucose homeostasis and body weight control in C57BL6/J mice with obesity. An obesity mouse model was developed by administering a high-fat diet (HFD) to C57BL6/J mice over 12 weeks. The experimental group, while continuing their HFD consumption, were administered eve

Zeolite Improves High-Fat Diet-Induced Hyperglycemia, Hyperlipidemia and Obesity in Mice.

Zeolite, an abundant mineral in the Earth's crust, is utilized in a wide range of fields because of its well-known adsorption properties. Its application as a functional food ingredient resembling dietary fiber is expected, but it has not yet been investigated in the context of prevention of lifestyle-related diseases. The present study was designed to evaluate the availability and safety of a natural zeolite preparation for this purpose. Acute oral toxicity testing showed that the lowest lethal dose of zeolite was more than 2,000 mg/kg body weight for both male and female mice. In a prolonged

Body mass index and waist-to-hip ratio misclassification of overweight and obesity in Chinese military personnel.

BACKGROUND: The rising prevalence of obesity in military personnel has raised great concerns. Previous studies suggest that body mass index (BMI)- and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR)-based obesity classifications in US military personnel and firefighters have high false negative and subsequently cause obesity misclassification. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether BMI and WHR could reflect the fat mass of Chinese military personnel. METHODS: Three hundred fifty-three male Chinese military personnel and 380 age-matched male adults were recruited. Obesity classification was defined by BMI, WHR, and body f

POCU1b, the n-Butanol Soluble Fraction of Polygoni Cuspidati Rhizoma et Radix, Attenuates Obesity, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver, and Insulin Resistance via Inhibitions of Pancreatic Lipase, cAMP-Dependent PDE Activity, AMPK Activation, and SOCS-3 Suppression.

This study investigated the effects of the n-BuOH soluble fraction of Polygoni Cuspidati 80% ethanol extract (POCU1b) on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL), and insulin resistance (IR) to find a safe and more effective agent. HPLC profiling of POCU1b identified seven marker compounds. POCU1b increased glycerol release, cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) level, and inhibited phosphodiesterase (PDE) activity. Seven weeks of POCU1b treatment decreased body weight gain, weight and adipocyte size in fat tissues, serum lipids, and triglyceride and lipid droplets

Adult-Onset Diseases in Low Birth Weight Infants: Association with Adipose Tissue Maldevelopment.

Low birth weight (LBW) infants have higher risk of developing insulin resistance and its comorbidities later in life. The concept of "developmental origins of health and disease" suggests that intrauterine and postnatal environments have an important role in increasing these risks. The risk of such adult-onset diseases in LBW infants might be associated with adipose tissue maldevelopment including altered body composition and increased amount of visceral fat, which is the same mechanism as that in children and adults with metabolic syndrome. However, LBW infants often have different characteri

Methidathion Poisoning.

Although methidathion is an organophosphate insecticide, it is different from the other organophosphates in terms of toxicity. Because of its relatively high fat solubility, the apparent volume of methidathion distribution throughout the body is very high, indicating that hemoperfusion is not effective in removing this organophosphate from the body. Redistribution of methidathion from fat to blood can also occur when plasma levels diminish. Additionally, acetylcholinesterase aging, which is the loss of an alkyl side chain that prevents reactivation by oximes, is very rapid so that the effectiv
