Postnatal development of masseteric motoneurons in congenital hypothyroid rats.

It has been known that an intact thyroid hormone is obligatory for the attainment of the normal masticatory function at the time of weaning. … results suggest that neonatal thyroid hormone deficiency considerably postponed the development of feeding behavior from sucking to chewing and biting.

Differential expression of orexin receptors 1 and 2 in the rat brain.

Orexins (hypocretins) are neuropeptides synthesized in the central nervous system exclusively by neurons of the lateral hypothalamus. Orexin-containing neurons have widespread projections and have been implicated in complex physiological functions including feeding behavior, sleep states, neuroendocrine function, and autonomic control. Two orexin receptors (OX(1)R and OX(2)R) have been identified, with distinct expression patterns throughout the brain, but a systematic examination of orexin receptor expression in the brain has not appeared. We used in situ hybridization histochemistry to exami…

The costs of infant carrying in captive cotton-top tamarins.

Marmosets and tamarins have a communal rearing system in which all group members help to care for the twin infants characteristic of this family of primates. Helpers are likely to incur time and energy costs by contributing to infant care. Predictions that cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus) helpers would change their behavior when carrying infants because of reduced mobility and/or a need for increased vigilance were tested in a captive colony. Tamarins carrying an infant spent significantly less time feeding, foraging, moving, or engaging in social activities such as grooming than they did

Activity and State-Dependent Modulation of Salt Taste Behavior Via Pharyngeal Neurons in Drosophila melanogaster.

Sodium, which is present in NaCl (Sodium Chloride), is a vital nutrient required for numerous physiological processes. In animals, including Drosophila, low-salt concentrations induce attraction and high-salt concentrations trigger aversive behavior. Although the analysis of low and high salt concentrations in Drosophila has been described at the cellular level, the mechanisms governing high salt consumption and taste modulation remain unclear. Our study examined the neural basis of high NaCl consumption in adult Drosophila, focusing on how dietary adaptation influences salt acceptance. Our fi

Tomato secondary metabolites as natural regulators of Bemisia tabaci behavior and performance: current applicability and prospects.

The sweetpotato whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) is one of the most damaging insect pests of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), often causing severe yield losses and transmitting viral pathogens such as Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus. Although chemical insecticides are commonly used for whitefly management, the rapid development of insecticide resistance in B. tabaci poses a major challenge to sustainable control. In contrast, wild tomato genotypes exhibit superior resistance, primarily attributed to the production of secondary metabolites (SMs), such as terpenoids, phenolic compounds, and acylsugars. The

Evolutionary Background of Precise Vocal-Respiratory Temporal Coordination in Human Infants.

Human infants acquire speech through prolonged postnatal development. Sequential vocalizations, including speech, can be viewed as motor patterns consisting of alternating sound and silence. This temporal structure depends on the coordination of respiratory airflow and laryngeal activity, yet relatively little attention has been paid to how such timing control develops in infancy. In this review, we examine the development of vocal timing across two contexts: spontaneous vocalizations produced in nonsocial settings and vocal exchanges during face-to-face interactions. We highlight a developmen

A Hybrid Modeling Framework for Predictive Digital Twins of CHO Cell Culture.

Digital twins of mammalian cell cultures hold great potential for predictive bioprocess modeling, yet their development is challenged by the nonlinear dynamics and metabolic complexity of these systems. We present a hybrid computational framework that integrates mechanistic and data-driven modeling to construct predictive digital twins for Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell cultures producing monoclonal antibodies. The framework couples ordinary differential equation (ODE) models with constraint-based metabolic modeling and machine learning components trained on Bayesian-estimated metabolic rate

Rational Design, Synthesis, and Aphicidal Activity of Novel Insect Short Neuropeptide Analogs as Potential Aphid Control Agents.

Short neuropeptide F (sNPF) is a peptide unique to insects, characterized by a C-terminal phenylalanine and a conserved RLRFa motif, and plays key roles in controlling feeding behavior, growth, circadian rhythms, and water-salt homeostasis. We previously identified an sNPF analog, I-3, with aphidicidal activity. In this study, 10 sNPF analogs with aromatic or nonaromatic modifications at the N-terminus were designed based on I-3, using molecular docking and peptidomimetic strategies to investigate the role of N-terminal residues. Aphicidal activity showed that A-1 has stronger activity than I-…

From Structure to Function: Development of Relaxin-3 Analogs and their Role in RXFP3 Signaling.

Relaxin-3 is a two-chain neuropeptide of the insulin/relaxin superfamily and the cognate ligand for the G protein-coupled receptor RXFP3. Since its discovery, the relaxin-3/RXFP3 signaling system has emerged as a key regulator of feeding behavior, stress responses, arousal, addiction, and cognitive function. Recent structural studies, including the first cryo-electron microscopy structures of RXFP3 bound to relaxin-3 and small molecules, have provided significant insights into ligand-receptor interactions. Together with mutagenesis and pharmacological studies, these advances have facilitated t…

Comparative transcriptome analysis reveals aggravated damage on rice plants by brown planthoppers under elevated CO2.

The increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration will inevitably affect the photosynthesis of C3 plants, thus affecting herbivorous insects. Pr … s fed on rice plants grown under eCO2, resulting in stronger energy metabolism, thus enhancing that feeding behavior to attain sufficient nutrients. Therefore, both the weaken of defense in rice plants and enhancement of piercing and sucking ability of BPHs were presumed to cause the aggravated damage on rice plants by BPHs under eCO2.

Lorcaserin: Worthy of Further Insights? Results from Recent Research.

Lorcaserin is a 3-benzazepine that binds 5-HT2C serotonin receptors in the hypothalamus, where it mediates lack of hunger and/or satiety, and in the ventral tegmental area, the site of origin of the mesolimbic and mesocortical dopaminergic projections, which mediate pleasure and reward. The drug has been first developed for the treatment of obesity, where it has shown efficacy, and subsequently trialed to counter substance use (mostly cocaine, cannabis, opioids, and nicotine) and craving, but showed inconsistent effects. Since 2020, the US Food and Drug Administration obtained that the drug wa

Enhanced photodegradation of p-arsanilic acid by oxalate in goethite heterogeneous system under UVA irradiation.

The widespread used organoarsenicals have drawn attention for decades due to their potential environment risks. In this study, a heterogeneous system of goethite/oxalate irradiated using UVA light (λ = 365 nm) was applied for the removal of ASA, a kind of organoarsenicals used in animal feeding operations as additives, from the aqueous phase through photodegradation. Results showed that the presence of 5 mM of oxalate significantly enhanced the photodegradation efficiency of ASA in the 0.1 g/L of goethite suspended system from 28 to ~100% within 180 min reaction at pH 5. Acid conditions favore

Tick hemocytes have pleiotropic roles in microbial infection and arthropod fitness.

Uncovering the complexity of systems in non-model organisms is critical for understanding arthropod immunology. Prior efforts have mostly focused on Dipteran insects, which only account for a subset of existing arthropod species in nature. Here, we describe immune cells or hemocytes from the clinically relevant tick Ixodes scapularis using bulk and single cell RNA sequencing combined with depletion via clodronate liposomes, RNA interference, Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats activation (CRISPRa) and RNA-fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). We observe molecular alt

The 5α-reductase inhibitor finasteride reduces opioid self-administration in animal models of opioid use disorder.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) has become a leading cause of death in the United States, yet current therapeutic strategies remain highly inadequate. To identify potential treatments for OUD, we screened a targeted selection of over 100 drugs using a recently developed opioid self-administration assay in zebrafish. This paradigm showed that finasteride, a steroidogenesis inhibitor approved for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia and androgenetic alopecia, reduced self-administration of multiple opioids without affecting locomotion or feeding behavior. These findings were confirmed in rats…
