Carotid Stent Fracture from Stylocarotid Syndrome.

Eagle syndrome is a rare condition resulting from elongation of the temporal styloid process or calcification of its associated stylohyoid ligaments. Although usually presenting with pain or odynophagia, Eagle syndrome has been reported to cause a multitude of neurologic symptoms or vascular complications, some of which can be life-threatening. We present a case in which an endovascularly placed internal carotid artery stent in close proximity to a calcified stylohyoid ligament resulted in stent fracture with subsequent stent and vessel occlusion. We review and discuss the presentation, diagno

Persistent posterolateral rotatory subluxation of the elbow in cubitus varus: a case report.

A 23-year-old woman who had an episode of elbow injury which was treated cast immobilisation in childhood with residual cubitus varus sustained a posterior fracture dislocation of the same elbow. She was treated with closed reduction. Six months later, however, her elbow became stiff, and a persistent posterolateral rotatory subluxation was noted. Operations were performed in two steps; first, the radial head, which was subluxed posteriorly, was reduced and the lateral collateral ligament complex was reconstructed, and second, the stiff elbow was mobilised. Two years after the first surgery, t

Diagnosis of von Recklinghausen neurofibromatosis and the Albright syndrome. Two case reports.

We describe two females who were diagnosed as suffering from the Albright syndrome early in childhood. Both have close relatives with neurofibromatosis; it has been established that one of the two, in fact, has von Recklinghausen neurofibromatosis, while it remains uncertain if the other one also has this disorder. Apart from the pattern of café-au-lait hyperpigmentation, these two patients have several symptoms in common: repeated and spontaneous bone fractures leading to pseudarthrosis, frontal bossing, and kyphoscoliosis. Distinguishing between the two diseases is important for genetic coun

[Reposition of old dislocations or dislocation fractures of the carpal bones using Wagner's distraction apparatus].

In treatment of old traumatic dislocations and fracture dislocations of the carpal bone complex, a careful and exactly dosed pre-extension of the shrunken capsular ligaments can be obtained by the use of Wagner's distraction apparatus. The pre-extension procedure is followed by open or closed reposition. The surgeon's movements are not hindered. Sterile draping of the operating field can easily be performed in contrast to other methods of reposition like hanging up the forearm with a counter-weight or olecranon-metacarpal extension with counter-traction. Up to 10 months after volar dislocation

Traumatic hip dislocation in childhood. A report of 26 cases and review of the literature.

Twenty-six cases of traumatic hip dislocation in children are presented. Although closed reduction was achieved in most instances, open procedures had to be employed in two cases of soft tissue interposition and in a patient with ipsilateral fracture of the femoral shaft. In 16 patients, with a follow-up averaging 14 years, the incidence of complications (avascular necrosis, coxa magna and arthrosis) was significant. Factors predisposing to abnormal results were delayed reduction and severe trauma. Neither the method of immobilization nor the interval without weight-bearing over 4 weeks were o

Incidence and predictors of dorsal comminution in older adults with low-energy distal radius fracture.

PURPOSE: To identify the incidence of dorsal comminution using computed tomography (CT) images and identify predictors of this phenomenon in older adults with low-energy distal radius fractures (DRFs). METHODS: A total of 150 patients aged > 50 years with fall-induced dorsally angulated DRFs were enrolled in this study. Patients were divided into two groups based on the presence of dorsal comminution, defined as a metaphyseal void of greater than one-third of the maximum posterior to anterior depth of the bone on at least three cuts in the sagittal plane on post-reduction CT images. Data on p

Carpal Joint Malalignment With Distal Radius Malunion and Factors in Correction After Distal Radius Osteotomy.

PURPOSE: There is a paucity of data regarding recommendations on when to correct for distal radius malunions and if the initial severity of the radiographic outcomes is correlated with the ability to correct to baseline. We evaluated the effects of distal radius corrective osteotomy on preoperative carpal joint malalignment resulting from distal radius malunions, correlated injury severity and osteotomy timing to radiographic outcomes, and developed a straightforward classification system for predicting radiocarpal and midcarpal maladaptive patterns. METHODS: A retrospective review included 2

Effects of the @ctivehip telerehabilitation program on the quality of life, psychological factors and fitness level of patients with hip fracture.

INTRODUCTION: Telerehabilitation has emerged in the last decade as a promising alternative to conduct the rehabilitation process at home. However, there are no studies testing the effects of telerehabilitation interventions for patients with hip fracture on quality of life nor psychological factors, whereas the evidence on fitness level is scarce. Thus, the aim of this study is to test the effects of the @ctivehip telerehabilitation program on the quality of life, psychological factors and fitness level of patients who had suffered a hip fracture. METHODS: The present study is a non-randomize

Investigation of the Fracture Characteristics of a Cement Mortar Slab under Impact Loading Based on the CDEM.

For brittle and quasi-brittle materials such as rock and concrete, the impact-resistance characteristics of the corresponding engineering structures are key to successful application under complex service environments. Modeling of concrete-like slab fractures under impact loading is helpful to analyze the failure mechanism of an engineering structure. In this paper, simulation models of impact tests of a cement mortar slab were developed, and a continuum-discontinuum element method (CDEM) was used for dynamic analysis. Concretely, the cracking simulations of a mortar slab when considering the

Plate versus Kirschner wire fixation in treatment of fourth and fifth carpometacarpal fracture-dislocations: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Fourth and fifth carpometacarpal fracture-dislocations with unsatisfactory closed reduction commonly require later open reduction and internal fixation. However, the optimal method of internal fixation for these is unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine through objective clinical measures which method is superior for fourth and fifth carpometacarpal fracture-dislocations: a K-wire or a plate. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of hospital records of patients who had received treatment for fourth and fifth carpometacarpal fracture-dislocations at one hospital

Troubleshooting in the Treatment of Pseudoarthrosis After a Humeral Diaphyseal Fracture: A Case Report.

We report a case of a patient with a history of surgery for insufficient pseudoarthrosis after a humeral diaphyseal fracture. Although most humeral nonunions are successfully treated with a single procedure, some humeral nonunions are more difficult to heal and require multiple procedures. A-61-year-old man presented at our hospital with pain and deformity in his left upper arm. The humeral diaphyseal fracture had been previously treated elsewhere with open reduction and internal fixation. Some days prior to his visit at our hospital, he had had pain in his left upper arm, without a particular

Hybrid cadaveric/surrogate model of thoracolumbar spine injury due to simulated fall from height.

A fall from high height can cause thoracolumbar spine fracture with retropulsion of endplate fragments into the canal leading to neurological deficit. Our objectives were to develop a hybrid cadaveric/surrogate model for producing thoracolumbar spine injury during simulated fall from height, evaluate the feasibility and performance of the model, and compare injuries with those observed clinically. Our model consisted of a 3-vertebra human lumbar specimen (L3-L4-L5) stabilized with muscle force replication and mounted within an impact dummy. The model was subjected to a fall from height of 2.2

The effect of osteoporosis on outcomes of operatively treated distal radius fractures.

PURPOSE: We hypothesized that postmenopausal osteoporotic women with distal radius fractures treated with open reduction internal fixation had worse functional outcomes than women without osteoporosis sustaining similar injuries. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed prospectively collected data for 64 postmenopausal women treated with open reduction internal fixation for distal radius fractures between 2006 and 2010 with known bone mineral density measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry at the time of injury (osteopenia, n = 44; osteoporosis, n = 20). Data collected included age, mechani

Surgical site infections after distal radius fracture surgery: a nation-wide cohort study of 31,807 adult patients.

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections (SSI) after distal radius fracture (DRF) surgery have not previously been studied as the primary outcome in a large population with comparative data for different surgical methods. The aims of this study were 1) to compare SSI rates between plate fixation, percutaneous pinning and external fixation, and 2) to study factors associated with SSI. METHODS: We performed a nation-wide cohort study linking data from the Swedish national patient register (NPR) with the Swedish prescribed drug register (SPDR). We included all patients ≥18 years with a registration

Postural stabilizing effect of alfacalcidol and active absorbable algal calcium (AAA Ca) compared with calcium carbonate assessed by computerized posturography.

Sway and postural instability have drawn attention as a risk factor for osteoporotic fracture, in addition to low bone mineral density (BMD) and poor bone quality. In view of the fracture-reducing effect of alfacalcidol and active absorbable algal calcium (AAA Ca) not readily explained by rather mild increases of BMD, attempts were made to evaluate postural stabilizing effect of alfacalcidol, AAA Ca, and calcium carbonate (CaCO(3)) by computerized posturography. Track of the gravity center was analyzed to calculate parameters related to tract length, track range, and track density to express t

A Quality Improvement Project to Measure and Improve the Quality of Below-Knee Ankle Cast Application in Emergency Departments.

Background Ankle fractures are very common injuries seen in an emergency setting. Initial management involves the application of below-knee plaster casts. At our local trauma meetings, we have observed that below-knee casts are often applied incorrectly which can result in suboptimal outcomes for patients and increase the burden on plaster room services if re-application is required. This quality improvement project aimed to assess the quality of below-knee cast applications for ankle fractures in two local district general hospitals (DGHs). Methodology We performed a closed-loop audit utilisi

Stent fracture and embolization: an unusual late complication of neonatal coarctation of aorta stenting with bioresorbable vascular scaffold.

BACKGROUND: Critical neonatal coarctation of the aorta (CoA) may present with cardiogenic shock and severe ventricular dysfunction, rendering immediate surgical repair high risk. In such situations, transcatheter interventions may be used as a temporary stabilizing strategy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-day-old male neonate with critical CoA presented in cardiogenic shock and severe left ventricular dysfunction. Balloon angioplasty resulted in only transient improvement due to elastic recoil, necessitating rescue implantation of a bioresorbable vascular scaffold. This led to rapid haemodynamic sta
