Auditory hallucinations and the mismatch negativity: processing speech and non-speech sounds in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: In line with emerging research strategies focusing on specific symptoms rather than global syndromes in psychiatric disorders, we examined the functional neural correlates of auditory verbal hallucinations (AHs) in schizophrenia. Recent neuroimaging and behavioural evidence suggest a reciprocal relationship between auditory cortex response to external sounds versus that induced by AHs. METHODS: The mismatch negativity (MMN), a well established event-related potential (ERP) index of auditory cortex function, was assessed in 12 hallucinating patients (HP), 12 non-hallucinating patie

Brain imaging of neuropathic pain.

Many studies have focused on defining the network of brain structures involved in normal physiological pain. The different dimensions of pain perception (i.e., sensory discriminative, affective/emotional, cognitive/evaluative) have been shown to depend on different areas of the brain. In contrast, much less is known about the neural basis of pathological chronic pain. In particular, it is unclear whether such pain results from changes to the physiological "pain matrix". We review here studies on changes in brain activity associated with neuropathic pain syndromes-a specific category of chronic

Effect of low-frequency rTMS on electromagnetic tomography (LORETA) and regional brain metabolism (PET) in schizophrenia patients with auditory hallucinations.

BACKGROUND: Auditory hallucinations are characteristic symptoms of schizophrenia with high clinical importance. It was repeatedly reported that low frequency (<or=1 Hz) repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) diminishes treatment-resistant auditory hallucinations. A neuroimaging study elucidating the effect of rTMS in auditory hallucinations has yet to be published. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the distribution of neuronal electrical activity and the brain metabolism changes after low-frequency rTMS in patients with auditory hallucinations. METHODS: Low-frequency rTMS (0.9 Hz, 100% of

Working memory and long-term memory for faces: Evidence from fMRI and global amnesia for involvement of the medial temporal lobes.

Behavioral studies with amnesic patients and imaging studies with healthy adults have suggested that medial temporal lobe (MTL) structures known to be essential for long-term declarative memory (LTM) may also be involved in the maintenance of information in working memory (WM). To examine whether MTL structures are involved in WM maintenance for faces, and the nature of that involvement, WM and LTM for faces were examined in normal participants via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and in amnesic patients behaviorally. In Experiment 1, participants were scanned while performing a WM

Do psychotherapies produce neurobiological effects?

BACKGROUND: An area of recent interest in psychiatric research is the application of neuroimaging techniques to investigate neural events associated with the development and the treatment of symptoms in a number of psychiatric disorders. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether psychological therapies modulate brain activity and, if so, to examine whether these changes similar to those found with relevant pharmacotherapy in various mental disorders. METHODS: Relevant data were identified from Pubmed and PsycInfo searches up to July 2005 using combinations of keywords including 'psychological therapy',

The prediction of rapid conversion to Alzheimer's disease in mild cognitive impairment using regional cerebral blood flow SPECT.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) comprises a heterogeneous group with a variety of clinical outcomes and they are at risk for developing Alzheimer's disease (AD). The prediction of conversion from MCI to AD using the initial neuroimaging studies is an important research topic. We investigated the initial regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) measurements using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in individuals with 76 amnesic MCI (52 subjects converted to AD and 24 subjects did not convert to AD at 3-year follow-up) and 57 age- and gender-matched controls. We sought functional prof

The clinical syndrome associated with lumbar spinal stenosis.

Lumbar spinal stenosis is well defined in patho-anatomical terms but its clinical features are heterogeneous. We carried out a comprehensive retrospective review of the clinical features, radiological changes and outcome of 75 patients with radiologically diagnosed lumbar spinal stenosis in order to define its clinical spectrum. The presenting complaints were of weakness, numbness/tingling, radicular pain and neurogenic claudication in almost equal proportions. The commonest symptom was numbness or tingling of the legs. Neurogenic claudication eventually occurred in only 61%. Ninety-three per

Neurodevelopmental effects of severe hypoglycemia in children with type 1 diabetes: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is one of the most common chronic autoimmune disorders affecting children and adolescents worldwide. It results from the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic β-cells, leading to a complete lack of insulin. The primary treatment involves lifelong insulin therapy, which must be carefully adjusted to maintain stable blood glucose levels and prevent both high and low blood sugar episodes. Severe hypoglycemia (SH) is one of the most critical acute complications of insulin treatment, especially in young patients who may have a limited ability to recognize

Brain aging patterns among nine neurological disorders: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The difference between neuroimaging-predicted brain age and chronological age, the predicted age difference (PAD), has been studied as a potential biomarker reflecting individual brain health. Although previous large-scale studies have shown that brain age deviations occur across multiple disorders, cross-disorder comparisons of PAD within a unified framework, together with identification of the neuroimaging features associated with these differences and their related gene expression profiles, remain limited. Our aims are to systematically compare brain aging across multiple common

A literature review of dopamine in binge eating.

OBJECTIVE: Binge eating, a core diagnostic symptom in binge eating disorder and bulimia nervosa, increases the risk of multiple physiological and psychiatric disorders. The neurotransmitter dopamine is involved in food craving, decision making, executive functioning, and impulsivity personality trait; all of which contribute to the development and maintenance of binge eating. The objective of this paper is to review the associations of dopamine levels/activities, dopamine regulator (e.g., dopamine transporter, degrading enzymes) levels/activities, and dopamine receptor availability/affinity wi

Functional activity level reported by an informant is an early predictor of Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Loss of autonomy in day-to-day functioning is one of the feared outcomes of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and relatives may have been worried by subtle behavioral changes in ordinary life situations long before these changes are given medical attention. In the present study, we ask if such subtle changes should be given weight as an early predictor of a future AD diagnosis. METHODS: Longitudinal data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) were used to define a group of adults with a mild cognitive impairment (MCI) diagnosis remaining stable across several visits (

Beyond Glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1c): A Systematic Review of Metabolic Interventions, Insulin Resistance, and Cognitive Function Across the Obesity-to-Diabetes Continuum.

Insulin resistance may contribute to cognitive vulnerability before persistent hyperglycemia becomes apparent; however, its clinical relevance as a predictor of cognitive change or therapeutic target remains uncertain. This systematic review with narrative synthesis evaluated the effects of metabolically targeted interventions on insulin resistance and cognitive function in middle-aged and older adults across the obesity-to-type 2 diabetes continuum. MEDLINE via PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) were searched for studies published from Jan
