Comparisons of musculoskeletal disorders among ten different medical professions in Taiwan: a nationwide, population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: Medical personnel are at risk of musculoskeletal disorders but little is known whether the risk of musculoskeletal disorders were different among various medical professions. Therefore, this study compared the risk of musculoskeletal disorders among personnel of 10 different medical professions in Taiwan using a nationwide health claims database. METHODS: Data from the 2000-2010 Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database were used to identify personnel of 10 different medical professions. Randomized trial testing a worksite sun protection program in an outdoor recreation industry.

Health communication campaigns intended to reduce chronic and severe exposure to ultraviolet radiation in sunlight and prevent skin cancer are a national priority. Outdoor workers represent an unaddressed, high-risk population. Go Sun Smart (GSS), a worksite sun safety program largely based on the diffusion-of-innovations theory, was evaluated in a pair-matched, group-randomized, pretest-posttest controlled design enrolling employees at 26 ski areas in Western North America. Employees at the intervention ski areas were more aware of GSS (odds ratio [OR] = 8.27, p < .05) and reported less sunbu

Therapists' experiences with implementing new documentation practices for low back pain in electronic health care records: an interview study.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical practice is constantly changing with new guidelines being published, changes in patients' preferences but also by new qualitative requirements for therapists and institutional surveys on delivered care. Electronic health records (EHR) are used for all these purposes. We involved physiotherapists and occupational therapists in an intervention to change documentation practice in their electronic health record for low back pain (LBP) and later evaluated the feasibility of the new health records. The aim of the present study was to explore therapists' experiences working with t

Neurologic illness associated with occupational exposure to the solvent 1-bromopropane--New Jersey and Pennsylvania, 2007-2008.

1-Bromopropane (1-BP) (n-propyl bromide) is a solvent increasingly used as a substitute for ozone-depleting chloro-fluorocarbons and similar regulated compounds. 1-BP is used in vapor and immersion degreasing operations and other manufacturing processes, and as a solvent in industries using aerosol-applied adhesives. In some states, 1-BP is used as a solvent in dry cleaning because of restrictions on use of perchloroethylene (tetrachloroethylene), a possible human carcinogen. Published studies of workers exposed to 1-BP have raised concerns about occupational health risks associated with expos

Beyond risk factors: A capacity framework for cancer survivorship research.

Cancer survivorship research has identified numerous biological, behavioral, psychosocial, health care, and structural factors that influence recovery. However, these factors are typically studied as separate determinants rather than interacting influences. This commentary proposes available survivorship capacity as a unifying framework that explains how these diverse determinants collectively shape recovery and survivorship outcomes. Concepts from geroscience, health care delivery, rehabilitation, occupational therapy, and human factors science were synthesized to develop a conceptual framewo

Socioeconomic Inequalities in the Transition to Nursing Home Care: Longitudinal Evidence from a Population Based Study in Switzerland.

Lower socioeconomic status (SES) is linked to earlier nursing home admission, but it is unclear if this remains true after accounting for health needs. This study examines SES-related inequalities in nursing home admission, controlling for health needs in an area of Switzerland with universal home-based care for older adults. Data were from the Lausanne Cohort 65+ study, including 3650 participants. SES was measured by education level, occupational class, and receiving means-tested benefits (a proxy for low income). Health needs were assessed with a set of physical and mental health variables.

Reactive nitrogen and human health: acute and long-term implications.

Reactive-nitrogen (Nr) has a wide variety of beneficial and detrimental effects on human health. The most important of the beneficial effects are increasing global and regional food supplies and increased nutritional quality of available foods. However, lack of adequate dietary intake of amino acids and proteins is a serious cause of malnutrition when food supplies are inadequate because of poverty, drought, floods, wars, and displacements of people as refugees. There is sufficient, though limited, quantitative data indicating that increased circulation of Nr in the environment is responsible

Exploring suicide among immigrant farmworkers in the United States: evidence from the National Violent Death Reporting System.

BACKGROUND: Agricultural workers face some of the highest suicide rates in the United States, yet limited research has examined suicide among immigrant and migrant farmworkers (IMFs), a population recognized as particularly vulnerable within occupational health surveillance priorities. This study examined circumstances contributing to suicide among IMFs and compared these to circumstances among U.S.-born farmworkers using National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) data. METHODS: This multiple methods study used NVDRS data from 2013 to 2023, restricted to decedents in agricultural worker

Identify perceived strategies for promoting happiness among nurses: Protocol for a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Enjoyment at work and overall happiness are essential elements of a thriving workforce, particularly in high-pressure environments like healthcare. Nurses frequently experience occupational burnout and stress due to the demanding nature of their profession, which can adversely affect their performance, job satisfaction, and overall well-being. Understanding the factors that contribute to happiness in nursing is crucial, as fostering a positive work environment can lead to improved patient care, reduced turnover rates, and enhanced mental health among healthcare professionals. Influence of work intensity on acute kidney injury risk during simulated occupational heat stress.

Violation of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) heat stress recommendations by exceeding the allowable wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) for a given work intensity and work-rest ratio augments acute kidney injury (AKI) risk. Here, we tested the hypothesis that exceeding the allowable work intensity at a given WBGT and work-rest ratio would also worsen AKI risk. Twelve healthy adults completed two NIOSH recommendation compliant trials and one noncompliant trial consisting of a 4 h (half workday) exposure. Work-rest ratio was fixed at 30 min of walking and 30 min of

The United States Navy and Employees with Cancer: The Time for Change Is Now.

The US Navy, including the US Marine Corps and Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP), has a robust radiological protection and monitoring program meeting (and typically exceeding, in the name of conservatism) federal law requirements. The program covers the variety of ways in which the Navy produces and uses ionizing radiation and radioactive sources: in medicine, nuclear ship propulsion and repair, industrial and aircraft radiography, and myriad other unique uses in carrying out its vital mission. In executing these programs, thousands of people across the world are employed as active-duty

Preparation, certification and interlaboratory analysis of workplace air filters spiked with high-fired beryllium oxide.

Occupational sampling and analysis for multiple elements is generally approached using various approved methods from authoritative government sources such as the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as consensus standards bodies such as ASTM International. The constituents of a sample can exist as unidentified compounds requiring sample preparation to be chosen appropriately, as in the case of beryllium in the form of beryllium oxide (BeO). Bacterial and fungal aerosols in indoor environment in Central and Eastern European countries.

Studies of indoor bioaerosols conducted in Central and Eastern European countries, as a result of the scarcity of funding, mostly do not attain the level presented by similar studies in Northern America and Western Europe. For socio-economic reasons, most of the intense studies on indoor bioaerosols in Central and Eastern European countries were carried out in industrial facilities and have contributed significantly to occupational health science. In contrast, until recently, insufficient of studies have been conducted on bioaerosols of residential and communal premises (dwellings, offices, sc

A 1982-1992 surveillance programme on Danish pottery painters. Biological levels and health effects following exposure to soluble or insoluble cobalt compounds in cobalt blue dyes.

This paper provides a short overview of cobalt-related diseases with particular reference to the potential carcinogenicity of cobalt compounds, and a review of a 10-year surveillance programme on plate painters exposed to cobalt in two Danish porcelain factories. Clinical experience and epidemiological studies have demonstrated that cobalt exposure may lead to severely impaired lung function, i.e. hard metal lung disease and occupational cobalt-related asthma, contact dermatitis and cardiovascular effects. However, the evidence for the carcinogenicity of cobalt and cobalt compounds is consider

Geriatricians and occupational therapists' perspectives on the role of occupational therapy in delirium care in long-term care settings: a multi-site study.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a frequent and serious condition in older adults in long-term care (LTC), often underdiagnosed and insufficiently addressed despite its significant impact on morbidity and mortality. Occupational therapists (OTs) may play a key role in non-pharmacological prevention and treatment approaches, yet their specific contribution may remain unclear and undervalued in clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: This study explored the perceptions of geriatricians and OTs regarding the role of OT in delirium care in LTC settings across three European countries. METHODS: A qualitative, multi

Bridging the Gap Between Rehabilitation and Return to Work: A Qualitative Evaluation of a Workplace Intervention for Low Back Pain.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) can lead to disability and sick leave, impacting work participation and overall health. Given the complex and multifactorial nature of LBP, Belgium's Federal Agency for Occupational Risks (FEDRIS) promotes a secondary prevention strategy for LBP among workers engaged in ergonomically demanding tasks. This strategy includes multidisciplinary-based rehabilitation and an optional workplace intervention (WPI), initiated upon employer request. The WPI component consists of a half-day ergonomic risk analysis at the workplace conducted by an external occupational healt
