Long-Read Sequencing for Species-Level Resolution of the Equine Gut Microbiota Reveals the Need for Improved Databases.

Differences in gut microbiota composition related to diet have been reported in horses, but characterization of specific microbial taxa remains limited, particularly at the species level. The objective of this study was to use long-read sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene to provide additional taxonomic insight into the intestinal microbiota in horses. Fecal samples were collected from 12 horses on pasture and from 6 of them after switching to a hay diet. Sequencing yielded low read counts per sample, and the analysis failed to detect statistical differences in alpha- and beta-diversity among diet…

Coexistence of seminoma and leiomyoma in the testis of an Arabian-Barbe stallion: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Testicular tumors are rare in horses, with seminoma being the most frequently described in the literature. In Morocco, many stallions used for Tbourida are intentionally kept intact, as uncastrated horses are traditionally viewed as symbols of prestige and cultural pride. This cultural practice increases the likelihood of detecting testicular pathology in mature stallions. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 15-year-old Arabian-Barbe stallion used in Tbourida was presented for evaluation after the owner noticed a slow, progressive enlargement of the right testis over a period of more than 1 year.…

A mathematical model of metacarpal subchondral bone adaptation, microdamage and repair in racehorses.

Fractures of the distal limb in Thoroughbred racehorses primarily occur because of accumulation of bone microdamage from high-intensity training. Mathematical models of subchondral bone adaptation of the third metacarpal lateral condyles are capable of approximating existing data for Thoroughbred racehorses in training or at rest. To improve upon previous models, we added a dynamic resorption rate and microdamage accumulation and repair processes. Our ordinary differential equation model simulates the coupled processes of bone adaptation and microdamage accumulation, and is calibrated to data …

Equine Brucellosis: Current Understanding and Challenges.

Brucellosis in equines, including horses, donkeys, and mules, is characterized by abscesses in tendons, bursae, and joints. Reproductive disorders, which are common in other animals, are rare in both males and females. Joint breeding of horses, cattle, and pigs was found as the main risk factor for equine brucellosis, with the transmission from equines to cattle or among equines possible, although unlikely. Hence, evaluation of the disease in equines can be considered an indirect indicator of the effectiveness of brucellosis control measures employed for other domestic species. Generally, the …

Frequency of Detection and Prevalence Factors Associated with Common Respiratory Pathogens in Equids with Acute Onset of Fever and/or Respiratory Signs (2008-2021).

A voluntary biosurveillance program was established in 2008 in order to determine the shedding frequency and prevalence factors for common r … followed by S. equi (4.7%), ERVs (2.3%), and EHV-1 (0.7%). Multiple pathogens were detected in 274 horses (2.7%) and no respiratory pathogens in 7836 horses (76.2%). Specific prevalence factors were determined for each of the six respiratory pathogen groups; most differences were associated with age, breed, and use of the horses, while the clinical sign …

Molecular detection of Leishmania spp. in Brazilian cross-border south region mammalian hosts.

Visceral leishmaniasis is an endemic zoonotic disease identified especially in developing territories. Brazil's northeast, southeast and midwest have been endemic for several years; currently, the infection is spreading to the south. Dogs are the main reservoirs; however, other mammal species have also been infected. Herein, we have identified the infecting Leishmania species in dogs and horses from the south of Brazil, a new outbreak of the infection. Blood samples were collected in the urban area of Uruguaiana city. DNA was extracted from peripheral blood, kinetoplast DNA (kDNA) and ribosoma…

Possible canine source of Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus causing meningitis in an infant.

Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus (S. zooepidemicus) is a pathogen that colonizes and causes disease in horses, and less commonly, in other mammals. This zoonotic disease in humans is rare. In the reported human cases, it has caused bacteremia, endocarditis, arthritis and meningitis, and it has been linked to contact with horses or ingestion of unpasteurized dairy products. We report a case of a six-month-old female patient who presented with a one-day history of fevers and neurological symptoms. Blood and cerebrospinal fluid cultures revealed S. zooepidemicus, and brain imaging show…

[Serological survey of animal toxoplasmosis in Senegal].

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate, intracellular, parasitic protozoan within the phylum Apicomplexa that causes toxoplasmosis in mammalian hosts (including humans) and birds. We used modified direct agglutination test for the screening of the animals' sera collected in Senegal. In total, 419 animals' sera have been studied: 103 bovines, 43 sheep, 52 goats, 63 horses, 13 donkeys and 145 dogs. The collection of sera was performed in four different regions of Senegal: Dakar, Sine Saloum, Kedougou and Basse Casamance from 2011 to 2013. We have revealed antibodies in 13% of bovines, 16% of sheep, 15…

[Glanders--a comprehensive review].

Since 1990 the number of glanders outbreaks in race, military and pleasure horses in Asia and South America is steadily increasing. Glanders, which is eradicated in Western Europe, Australia and Northern America, is currently considered a re-emerging disease. Consequently, the disease may be introduced into glanders-free regions by subclinical carriers at any time. The causative agent of glanders, Burkholderia (B.) mallei, is highly contagious and leads to chronic disease in horses whereas in donkeys and mules the disease is acute and often fatal. Occurrence of the disease leads to internation…

Epistaxis related to exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage in south African Thoroughbreds.

This study investigated if environmental factors had an effect on the incidence of epistaxis related to exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH) among racehorses in southern Africa. Data covering the period 1986-2001 and involving 778 532 race runs were analysed. This included the following information: date of race, age, sex, name of breeder, trainer, distance, jockey, state of going, weight carried, racing centre and altitude. Veterinarians employed by the Jockey Club suspended officially entered horses that presented with epistaxis (frank bleeding from the nostrils) after racing. On-co…

Vitamin A, E and D nutrition in mares and foals during the winter season: effect of feeding two different vitamin-mineral concentrates.

The effects of feeding two different vitamin-mineral concentrates on serum levels of vitamins A, E and D and some growth indicators were exa … in winter and increased somewhat during the spring. The decrease in January was more pronounced in horses receiving vitamin concentrates containing less vitamin D. These results are interpreted to indicate that, in Finland, the commonly used amounts of dietary vitamins A and E or their bioavailability in vitamin-mineral concentrates are not sufficient t …

Chronic inflammatory and lymphoproliferative lesions of the equine small intestine.

A retrospective study was made of 20 horses with severe and extensive chronic disease of the small intestine. Many of the animals had clinical evidence of malabsorption, with progressive loss of weight, hypoalbuminaemia and sometimes anaemia. All but two of the horses were Thoroughbreds. The pathology was diverse. Nine of the cases were alimentary lymphomas (Platt, 1986) and five had lymphocytic and eosinophilic infiltrations in the bowel wall which were considered to be probable reactions to parasitic invasion. One had acute thrombosis associated with partial occlusion of the anterior mesente…

Pentobarbital poisoning in Sumatran tigers (Panthera tigris sumatrae).

Three Sumatran tigers (Panthera tigris sumatrae) at the Heidelberg Zoo in Germany presented with severe neurologic signs. Physical examination and diagnostic tests did not reveal a definitive diagnosis. Two days after initial presenting signs, all of the animals appeared clinically normal. An investigation into this outbreak revealed that all animals received horse meat on the evening before the incident. A toxicologic examination was initiated and serum analysis of the affected female tiger cub and the horse meat revealed contamination with pentobarbital.

Resection of the common digital extensor tendon in a gelding.

A four-year-old gelding was lame owing to a chronic septic common digital extensor tendon and sheath. The horse had been treated by open surgical lavage but the sepsis had recurred after three months. Physical, ultrasonographic, cytological and histological examinations confirmed chronic septic tenosynovitis and tendonitis. The entire intrathecal component of the common digital extensor tendon was resected under general anaesthesia and the synovial lining of the sheath was ablated. Postoperatively the horse regained good limb function and became sound.

Tendon lacerations.

Early and appropriate therapy for tendon lacerations can result in a sound, athletic horse in more than 50% of cases. Extensor tendon lacerations have a better prognosis and wound care, immobilization, and protection from flexor dominance are the goals of therapy. Flexor tendon lacerations are more serious because of the loss of support to the limb. Therapy goals include wound care, tendon suturing, and strict immobilization for approximately 6 weeks. This article describes management of horses with tendon lacerations and the outcomes in detail.

Crystalline composition of equine urinary calculi.

X-ray diffraction crystallography was used to determine the crystalline composition of 18 equine urinary calculi, including stones originating in the kidney, bladder and urethra. Calcium carbonate in the form of calcite was found to be the major component in all calculi examined. Other components commonly found included weddellite and substituted vaterite. Urine deposits from a number of normal horses were also examined. The significance of these findings, as well as those from a number of previous reports, are discussed in relation to the possible aetiology of urolithiasis in the horse.
