Human mpox (formerly monkeypox) disease has recently been reported in a number of European countries among individuals with no history of international travel or animal contact, causing global epidemic concerns. We describe the demographic, clinical characteristics, and laboratory data of four male patients with mpox disease, three of whom were human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive, and one who was HIV-negative but had type 1 diabetes mellitus and a recent history of urological surgery. The HIV-negative patient attracted interest because he had no history of suspected sexual contact; how

BACKGROUND/AIM: Tau is a microtubule-associated protein involved in the assembly and stabilization of microtubules. In human medicine, hyperphosphorylation of tau is associated with microtubule instability and is considered to play a role in the progression of multiple sclerosis (MS). MS is an autoimmune neurological disease that shares many characteristics, including pathological mechanisms, with canine meningoencephalitis of unknown etiology (MUE). With this background, this study investigated the presence of hyperphosphorylated tau in dogs with MUE and experimental autoimmune encephalomyeli

Mycoplasma genitalium is a newly emerged sexually transmitted disease pathogen and an independent risk factor for female cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease. The clinical symptoms caused by M. genitalium infection are mild and easily ignored. If left untreated, M. genitalium can grow along the reproductive tract and cause salpingitis, leading to infertility and ectopic pregnancy. Additionally, M. genitalium infection in late pregnancy can increase the incidence of preterm birth. M. genitalium infections are often accompanied by co-infection with other sexually transmitted pathogens (Chl

People living with human immunodeficiency virus have an increased cardiovascular risk due to higher prevalence of traditional risk factors, such as smoking, dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, or obesity, and particular risk factors, such as inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and antiretroviral therapy. Thus, people living with human immunodeficiency virus can develop accelerated atherosclerosis. The incidence of coronary artery disease in these patients may be twice as high compared with that of HIV-negative individuals with similar characteristics. "Porcelain aorta" is a term used to d

BACKGROUND: UV exposure continues to induce many health issues, though commercial sunscreens are available. Novel UV filters with high safety and efficacy are urgently needed. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) could be a suitable platform for UV filter development, due to their tunable optical, electrical, and photoelectric properties by precise controlled synthesis.
RESULTS: Herein, four zinc-based MOFs with various bandgap energies were chose to investigate their optical behaviors and evaluate their possibility as sunscreens. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) was found to possess the h

Moellerella wisconsensis is an Enterobacteriaceae with unclarified dispersion and pathogenicity. During an ongoing investigation about antimicrobial resistance in Greece, the occurrence of M. wisconsensis was evaluated among wild birds and humans. A total of 445 wild bird and 2000 human fecal samples were collected and screened for the presence of the organism. Subsequently, all M. wisconsensis strains were phenotypically and molecularly characterized regarding their antimicrobial resistance characteristics. Four M. wisconsensis were isolated from a common pheasant (Phasianus colchicus), two E

Interventions to mitigate long-term neurodevelopmental deficits such as memory and learning impairment in preterm infants are warranted. Manipulation of the gut microbiome affects host behaviors. In this study we determined whether early maturation of the infant microbiome is associated with neurodevelopment outcomes. Germ free mice colonized at birth with human preterm infant microbiomes from infants of advancing post menstrual age (PMA) demonstrated an increase in bacterial diversity and a shift in dominance of taxa mimicking the human preterm microbiome development pattern. These characteri

The role of CD4 T regulatory cells is well established in peripheral tolerance and the pathogenesis of the murine model and human autoimmune diseases. CD4 T regulatory cells (CD4 Tregs) have been investigated in common variable immunodeficiency (CVID). Recently, additional members have been added to the club of regulatory lymphocytes. These include CD8 T regulatory (CD8 Tregs), B regulatory (Bregs), and T follicular helper regulatory (TFR) cells. There are accumulating data to suggest their roles in both human and experimental models of autoimmune disease. Their phenotypic characterization and

Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease that was once endemic in west and central Africa caused by monkeypox virus. However, cases recently have been confirmed in many nonendemic countries outside of Africa. WHO declared the ongoing monkeypox outbreak to be a public health emergency of international concern on July 23, 2022, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The rapidly increasing number of confirmed cases could pose a threat to the international community. Here, we review the epidemiology of monkeypox, monkeypox virus reservoirs, novel transmission patterns, mutations and mechanisms of viral i

PURPOSE: To establish normal reference values for the human Tympanic Ring (TR) during prenatal development, and to describe and interpret its growth dynamics.
METHODS: Fifty spontaneously aborted human fetuses aged 12-37 weeks with normal external characteristics were evaluated. The parameters measured in the TR were the cephalocaudal and dorsoventral axes, total area, thickness, height, and length and angle of the notch of Rivinus (NR). Data were subjected to statistical analysis.
RESULTS: The following values were obtained at the end of fetal development: cephalocaudal and dorsoventral axe

OBJECTIVES: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is characterized by a specific transcriptome. Since the DCM molecular network is largely unknown, the aim was to identify specific disease-related molecular targets combining an original machine learning (ML) approach with protein-protein interaction network.
METHODS: The transcriptomic profiles of human myocardial tissues were investigated integrating an original computational approach, based on the Custom Decision Tree algorithm, in a differential expression bioinformatic framework. Validation was performed by quantitative real-time PCR.
RESULTS: Ou

The role of fusion genes and cancer driver genes in malignant transformation has traditionally been explored using transgenic or chimeric mouse models. It has been challenging to develop models that fully resemble the characteristics and morphology of human cancers. This applies to anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL), a malignancy classified as a peripheral T-cell lymphoma. It is still unclear at which stage of T-cell development ALCL can occur, as well as the early molecular events required for malignant transformation. In this issue of Cancer Research, Pawlicki and colleagues introduced th

Arecoline N-oxide (ANO), an oxidative metabolite of the areca nut, is a predictable initiator in carcinogenesis. The mechanisms of arecoline metabolites in human cancer specimens is still limited. This present study aims to estimate the oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) inductive activity between arecoline metabolites in human cancer specimens/OSCC cells. We have collected 22 pairs (tumor and non-tumor part) of patient's specimens and checked for clinical characteristics. The identification of arecoline and its metabolites levels by using LC-MS/MS. The human eye has a unique immune architecture and behavior. While the conjunctiva is known to have a well-defined lymphatic drainage system, the cornea, sclera, and uveal tissues were historically considered "alymphatic" and thought to be immune privileged. The very fact that the aqueous outflow channels carry a clear fluid (aqueous humor) along the outflow pathway makes it hard to ignore its lymphatic-like characteristics. The development of novel lymphatic lineage markers and expression of these markers in aqueous outflow channels and improved imaging capabilities has sparked a renewed inte

There are >120 forms of non-syndromic deafness associated with identified genetic loci. In particular, mutation of the gap junction beta 2 gene (GJB2), which encodes connexin (CX)26 protein, is the most frequent cause of hereditary deafness worldwide. We previously described an induction method to develop functional CX26 gap junction-forming cells from mouse-induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and generated in vitro models for GJB2-related deafness. However, functional CX26 gap junction-forming cells derived from human iPSCs or embryonic stem cells (ESCs) have not yet been reported. In this

Infertility is a complex multifactorial disease that affects up to 10% of couples across the world. However, many mechanisms of infertility remain unclear due to the lack of studies based on systematic knowledge, leading to ineffective treatment and/or transmission of genetic defects to offspring. Here, we developed an infertility disease database to provide a comprehensive resource featuring various factors involved in infertility. Features in the current IDDB version were manually curated as follows: (i) a total of 307 infertility-associated genes in human and 1348 genes associated with repr

Because of the low self-healing capacity of articular cartilage, cartilage injuries and degenerations triggered by various diseases are almost irreversible. Previous studies have suggested that human chondrocytes cultured in vitro tend to dedifferentiate during the cell-amplification phase and lose the physiological properties and functions of the cartilage itself, which is currently a critical limitation in the cultivation of cartilage for tissue engineering. Recently, numerous studies have focused on the modulation of chondrocyte redifferentiation. Researchers discovered the effect of variou

Significance: Scar formation is a natural result of mammalian wound healing. In humans and other mammals, however, deep dermal wounds and thermal injuries often result in formation of hypertrophic scars, leading to substantial morbidity and lending great importance to development of therapeutic modalities for burn scars. Clinical Issues: Thus, preclinical burn wound models that adequately simulate processes underlying human burn-induced wound healing, particularly those processes leading to chronic inflammation and development of hypertrophic scars, are critical to developing further treatment
