A numerical model applied to the simulation of cardiovascular hemodynamics and operating condition of continuous-flow left ventricular assist device.

The mathematical modeling of the cardiovascular system is a simple and noninvasive method to comprehend hemodynamics and the operating mechanism of the mechanical circulatory assist device. In this study, a numerical model was developed to simulate hemodynamics under different conditions and to evaluate the operating condition of continuous-flow left ventricular assist device (LVAD). The numerical model consisted of a cardiovascular lumped parameter (CLP) model, a baroreflex model, and an LVAD model. The CLP model was established to simulate the human cardiovascular system including the left h

Pulmonary Nocardiosis with Superior Vena Cava Syndrome in a HIV-Infected Patient: a Rare Case Report in the World.

Pulmonary nocardiosis is a common disease in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)infected patients. In most cases, the disease progresses slowly. Here, we have presented a case of pulmonary nocardiosis that rapidly progressed. A 35-year-old woman with acquired immune deficiency syndrome and superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome, who was previously lost to follow-up, presented to our hospital chronic non-productive cough. Her CD4 count was 33 cells/µL (4%). Chest X-ray revealed opacity in the right upper lobe of the lung, and the results of sputum acid-fast staining were negative. Anti-tuberculosis a

Enhanced insular/prefrontal connectivity when resisting from emotional distraction during visual search.

Previous literature demonstrated that the processing of emotional stimuli can interfere with goal-directed behavior. This has been shown primarily in the context of working memory tasks, but "emotional distraction" may affect also other processes, such as the orienting of visuo-spatial attention. During fMRI, we presented human subjects with emotional stimuli embedded within complex everyday life visual scenes. Emotional stimuli could be either the current target to be searched for or task-irrelevant distractors. Behavioral and eye-movement data revealed faster detection of emotional than neut

Stria terminalis, amygdala, and temporoparietal junction networks facilitate efficient emotion processing under expectations.

Rapid emotion processing is an ecologically essential ability for survival in social environments in which threatening or advantageous encounters dynamically and rapidly occur. Efficient emotion recognition is subserved by different processes, depending on one's expectations; however, the underlying functional and structural circuitry is still poorly understood. In this study, we delineate brain networks that subserve fast recognition of emotion in situations either congruent or incongruent with prior expectations. For this purpose, we used multimodal neuroimaging and investigated performance

Acute and long-term effects of electroconvulsive therapy on human dentate gyrus.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the most effective treatment for severe depression, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Animal studies have consistently shown that electroconvulsive stimulation induces neuroplastic changes in the dentate gyrus. To date, few studies have investigated the effect of ECT on human hippocampal subfields. In the current study, structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was conducted in 25 patients with major depressive episodes at 3 time points: before ECT (TP1), after 1 week of the last ECT (TP2) and after 3 months of the last ECT (TP3). Twenty he

Human subpulmonary infundibulum has an endocardial network of specialized conducting cardiomyocytes.

BACKGROUND: The right ventricular outflow tract is the most common source of ventricular arrhythmias in nonstructural heart disease. Most of these arrhythmias are of endocardial origin, but their morphologic substrate is mostly unknown. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to identify potential morphologic substrates for such arrhythmias originating within the right ventricular outflow tract. METHODS: Three adult human hearts that had been fixed in 4% formaldehyde were examined. In 2 of the hearts, which were obtained subsequent to necropsies, the base of the anterior papillary muscle of

Development of a finite element model of the ligamentous cervical vertebral column of a Great Dane.

Cervical spondylomyelopathy (CSM), also known as wobbler syndrome, affects mainly large and giant-breed dogs, causing compression of the cervical spinal cord and/or nerve roots. Structural and dynamic components seem to play a role in the development of CSM; however, pathogenesis is not yet fully understood. Finite element models have been used for years in human medicine to study the dynamic behavior of structures, but it has been mostly overlooked in veterinary studies. To our knowledge, no specific ligamentous spine models have been developed to investigate naturally occurring canine myelop

Computed tomographic and radiographic bronchial collapse may be a normal characteristic of forced expiration in dogs.

Tracheobronchomalacia has been diagnosed using radiography or bronchoscopy to confirm bronchial changes in luminal diameter during the respiratory cycle. However, studies in healthy humans suggest that some degree of bronchial collapse may be observed during the normal respiratory cycle. In this analytical study, the luminal diameter of the bronchus to each of the six pulmonary lobes and the mean percentage of expiratory collapse from end inspiratory, end expiratory, and two forced expiratory phases (10 and 15 ml/kg) were determined via computed tomography (CT) and radiography in 22 healthy Be

Syphilitic uveitis misdiagnosed as viral retinitis-a misleading history.

BACKGROUND: Syphilitic uveitis is an infective uveitis and a great mimicker. Misdiagnosis can lead to delay in the specific treatment resulting in deterioration of uveitis and loss of vision. FINDINGS: A 38-year-old unmarried female presented with pain, redness, and blurring of vision in the left eye for the last 5 days. She denied history of any sexual exposure in the past. Anterior segment examination of the right eye was normal and the left eye showed keratic precipitates with anterior chamber cells and iris pigments on anterior lens capsule. Fundus examination of the right eye showed a hy

Calcium Tartrate Tetrahydrate, Case Report of a Novel Human Kidney Stone.

Background: Calcium tartrate tetrahydrate has been reported as the main mineral in urinary stones in rats that have significant tartrate in their diet, but in humans, there has been only one mention of calcium tartrate stones in the form of bladder stone, and that case was in Africa. Case Presentation: Patient is a 34-year-old Caucasian male who presented with typical symptoms of nephrolithiasis. CT abd/pelvis (renal stone protocol) revealed a 2 cm nonobstructing stone of the right renal pelvis. Patient underwent an uncomplicated right percutaneous nephrolithotomy and was noted to be stone fre

Avoidant Responses to Interpersonal Provocation Are Associated with Increased Amygdala and Decreased Mentalizing Network Activity.

When intentionally pushed or insulted, one can either flee from the provoker or retaliate. The implementation of such fight-or-flight decisions is a central aspect in the genesis and evolution of aggression episodes, yet it is usually investigated only indirectly or in nonsocial situations. In the present fMRI study, we aimed to distinguish brain regions associated with aggressive and avoidant responses to interpersonal provocation in humans. Participants (thirty-six healthy young women) could either avoid or face a highly (HP) and a lowly (LP) provoking opponent in a competitive reaction time

The Poggendorff illusion driven by real and illusory contour: Behavioral and neural mechanisms.

The Poggendorff illusion refers to the phenomenon that the human brain misperceives a diagonal line as being apparently misaligned once the diagonal line is interrupted by two parallel edges, and the size of illusion is negatively correlated with the angle of interception of the oblique, i.e. the sharper the oblique angle, the larger the illusion. This optical illusion can be produced by both real and illusory contour. In this fMRI study, by parametrically varying the oblique angle, we investigated the shared and specific neural mechanisms underlying the Poggendorff illusion induced by real an

A preliminary evaluation of myoelectrical energy distribution of the front neck muscles in pharyngeal phase during normal swallowing.

Pharyngeal phase is a central hub of swallowing in which food bolus pass through from the oral cavity to the esophageal. Proper understanding of the muscular activities in the pharyngeal phase is useful for assessing swallowing function and the occurrence of dysphagia in humans. In this study, high-density (HD) surface electromyography (sEMG) was used to study the muscular activities in the pharyngeal phase during swallowing tasks involving three healthy male subjects. The root mean square (RMS) of the HD sEMG data was computed by using a series of segmented windows as myoelectrical energy. An

Prednisolone increases neural reactivity to negative socio-emotional stimuli in healthy young men.

Exogenous glucocorticoids are known to trigger affective changes, but these are highly variable across individuals. A better understanding of how synthetic glucocorticoids impact the processing of negative emotions in the human brain might help to predict such changes. In the present functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, we sought to uncover the slow effects of a synthetic glucocorticoid infusion on the neural response to socio-emotional scenes using a within-participant, double-blind, placebo-controlled design. In two separate sessions, 20 young males were given either an intrav

Numbers are not like words: Different pathways for literacy and numeracy.

Literacy and numeracy are two fundamental cognitive skills that require mastering culturally-invented symbolic systems for representing spoken language and quantities. How numbers and words are processed in the human brain and their temporal dynamics remain unclear. Using MEG (magnetoencephalography), we find brain activation differences for literacy and numeracy from early stages of processing in the temporal-occipital and temporal-parietal regions. Native speakers of Spanish were exposed to visually presented words, pseudowords, strings of numbers, strings of letters and strings of symbols w

Impaired development of left anterior heart field by ectopic retinoic acid causes transposition of the great arteries.

BACKGROUND: Transposition of the great arteries is one of the most commonly diagnosed conotruncal heart defects at birth, but its etiology is largely unknown. The anterior heart field (AHF) that resides in the anterior pharyngeal arches contributes to conotruncal development, during which heart progenitors that originated from the left and right AHF migrate to form distinct conotruncal regions. The aim of this study is to identify abnormal AHF development that causes the morphology of transposition of the great arteries. METHODS AND RESULTS: We placed a retinoic acid-soaked bead on the left o
