Crossing over: drug network characteristics and injection risk along the China-Myanmar border.

Border areas are important locations for understanding HIV transmission. This study examines individual and network correlates of border crossing and equipment sharing among methadone maintenance clients in Ruili City, a Chinese city on the Myanmar border. Data are from 298 clients enrolled in the Ruili Methadone Treatment Center. Clients were interviewed about drug use, HIV/AIDS knowledge, treatment motivation, and their social networks. Multinomial and logistic regression analysis were performed. Thirty percent of clients reported injecting in Myanmar. Compared to drug networks that usually

Developmental trajectories of boys' and girls' delinquency: sex differences and links to later adolescent outcomes.

This study examined gender differences in trajectories of delinquent behaviors over a 6-year period in adolescence and differential outcomes of these diverse developmental pathways. Participants were 754 children who were part of a longitudinal study of the development of early starting conduct problems. Four trajectory patterns were identified across grades 7-12: increasing, desisting, chronic, and nonproblem groups. Although the proportion of boys and girls varied across the pathways, both genders were represented on these trajectories. Boys were more represented on the chronic and desisting

Injecting risk behaviour and related harm among men who use performance- and image-enhancing drugs.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Performance- and image-enhancing drugs have the potential to be a significant public health issue. Detailed data on PIEDs injection are difficult to obtain because of the illicit and unsupervised way in which many PIEDs are used, and the hidden nature of the group. Our study examines the patterns of use, risk behaviours and related harm associated with PIEDs injection. We also report the ways in which PIEDs users currently seek injecting equipment and harm-reduction advice. DESIGN AND METHOD: Data were obtained via a structured questionnaire administered in face-to-face

Setting the stage: early child and family characteristics as predictors of later loneliness in children with developmental disabilities.

Children with developmental disabilities often report having few friends. Researchers have tended to focus on social skill deficits, neglecting other potent predictors of children's feelings of loneliness. In a sample of 82 children with developmental disabilities, we examined characteristics of the child at age 3 (i.e., the conclusion of early intervention services) as well as family income and emotional climate as predictors of children's reported feelings of loneliness at school during middle childhood (age 10). Children with lower levels of externalizing behavior problems at age 3 and from

Social isolation and sexual abuse among women who smoke crack.

The purpose of this study was to explore the prevalence of social isolation and its relationship to sexual trauma in a sample of Black women who smoke crack cocaine. Using a convenience sample of 115 Black women with a history of smoking crack cocaine, participants were interviewed for 2 to 4 hours and asked a variety of questions about their health, relationships, sexuality, and drug use. Bivariate and multivariate logistical regressions were used to predict whether the women reported being socially isolated. While social isolation was not necessarily a common experience among the sample, it

The chippers, the quitters, and the highly symptomatic: A 12-month longitudinal study of DSM-5 opioid- and cocaine-use problems in a community sample.

BACKGROUND: Individual trajectories of drug use and drug-related problems are highly heterogeneous. There is no standard taxonomy of these trajectories, but one could be developed by defining natural categories based on changes in symptoms of substance-use disorders over time. METHODS: Our study was conducted in a community sample in Baltimore, Maryland. At baseline, all participants were using opioids and/or cocaine, but none were in treatment. Drug use and symptomatology were assessed again at 12 months (N = 115). RESULTS: We defined Quitters as participants who had not used for at least 3

Do incest, depression, parental drinking, serious romantic relationships, and living with parents influence patterns of substance use during emerging adulthood?

This study examined how incest, depression, parental drinking, relationship status, and living with parents affect patterns of substance use among emerging adults, 18 to 25 years old. The study sample included (n = 11,546) individuals who participated in Waves I, II, and III of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). The study used separate latent class analysis for males and females to determine how patterns of substance use clustered together. The study identified the following three classes of substance use: heavy, moderate, and normative substance use patterns. M

To tell or not to tell: negotiating disclosure for people living with HIV on antiretroviral treatment in a South African setting.

Disclosure of HIV status occurs for a variety of reasons and in various contexts, such as to sexual partners to enable safer sexual choices, to health-care workers to access treatment and care services and to family and community members to gain various forms of support. The reasons for disclosure or non-disclosure are shaped by the relationships, needs and circumstances of people living with HIV (PLHIV) at the time of disclosure. The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the act and experience of disclosure in order to understand how these experiences of disclosure impact on t

Mothering an extremely low birth-weight infant: a phenomenological study.

Mothers of preterm infants are reported to experience heightened levels of psychological stress, greater than mothers of full-term infants during the neonatal period. The purpose of this study is to describe the lived experience of what it is like to be a mother of an extremely low birth-weight infant during their stay with their infants in the NICU. Interpretive phenomenology articulated by Benner and Diekelmann is the method of qualitative research employed. Thematic analysis is the method of narrative analysis that is used to capture and describe the lived experience with emerging themes, p

Prevalence of Work-Related Pain or Discomfort Among Urologists in the State of Florida: Results From the Florida Urologic Society Task Force on Ergonomic Challenges Experienced by Its Members.

BACKGROUND: Pain and work-related musculoskeletal disorders are commonly seen in surgeons, significantly impacting quality of life and burnout. A questionnaire-based study was conducted to further investigate the nature and etiology of work-related pain among urologists in the state of Florida. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to quantify the number of urologists who reported work-related musculoskeletal disorders >25% of the time. METHODS: The Florida Urologic Society Task Force developed a survey based on the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire, with additional input from Cornell's ergonomic s

Social cognition in women with eating disorders: Differences between the restrictive and purgative profiles.

INTRODUCTION: Difficulties in interpersonal interactions have been related to Social Cognition (SC) impairments in eating disorders (EDs). However, results do not account for differences between restrictive (rED) and purgative (pED) profiles and are just based on decoding tasks. This study assessed SC by Theory of Mind (ToM) abilities in ToM decoding and inference tasks between rED and pED patients and healthy women and its relationship with clinical variables. METHOD: 37 rED patients, 42 pED patients and 34 controls were evaluated using the Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC)

Human emotion processing accuracy, negative biases, and fMRI activation are associated with childhood trauma.

INTRODUCTION: Emerging literature suggests that childhood trauma may influence facial emotion perception (FEP), with the potential to negatively bias both emotion perception and reactions to emotion-related inputs. Negative emotion perception biases are associated with a range of psychiatric and behavioral problems, potentially due or as a result of difficult social interactions. Unfortunately, there is a poor understanding of whether observed negative biases are related to childhood trauma history, depression history, or processes common to (and potentially causative of) both experiences. Acuity, Diagnosis, and Community Factors in Virtual and In-Person Treatment: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of virtual psychotherapy, making videoconferencing a vital tool for maintaining c … perspective of both client and clinician. It is understood that critical domains such as community, interpersonal relationships, and clinicians' use of clinical skills are affected by the medium of care, and key factors such as clinical presentation (ie, acuity and diagnosis) must be accounted for when choosing a particular mode of care for a client.

Adaptation of the socioecological model to address disparities in engagement of Black men in prostate cancer genetic testing.

BACKGROUND: Black men consistently have higher rates of prostate cancer (PCA)- related mortality. Advances in PCA treatment, screening, and hereditary cancer assessment center around germline testing (GT). Of concern is the significant under-engagement of Black males in PCA GT, limiting the benefit of precision therapy and tailored cancer screening despite longstanding awareness of these disparities. To address these critical disparities, the Socioecological Model (SEM) was employed to develop comprehensive recommendations to overcome barriers and implement equitable strategies to engage Black

The effects of a long-term care walking program on balance, falls and well-being.

BACKGROUND: The effects of a regular and graduated walking program as a stand-alone intervention for individuals in long-term care are unclear. Exercise and fall prevention programs typically studied in long-term care settings tend to involve more than one exercise mode, such as a combination of balance, aerobic, strengthening, and flexibility exercises; and, measures do not always include mental health symptoms and behaviors, although these may be of even greater significance than physical outcomes. METHODS/DESIGN: We are randomly assigning residents of long-term care facilities into one of

Restraining orders: a frequent marker of adverse maternal health.

OBJECTIVE: Women with histories of interpersonal violence are poorly identified because of barriers in self-disclosure. This study identified differences on maternal health and child behavior between women who report filing a restraining order (RO) and those who do not among a nonreferred sample of women living in high-crime neighborhoods. METHODS: During a maternal interview mothers were asked whether they ever filed a RO, the victim/defendant relationship, the number of times, and the year of the filing. Four types of violence were coded independently based on maternal narratives: verbal ha

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Among Homicidally Bereaved Individuals: A Systematic Review and Bayesian Meta-Analysis.

Homicidal bereavement combines the loss of a close person with exposure to intentional interpersonal violence, yet its posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) burden has not been quantitatively synthesized. This systematic review identified 35 reports, of which nine independent, non-treatment-selected samples (N = 1,389) contributed to a Bayesian random-effects meta-analysis. Categorical and continuous PTSD outcomes were harmonized using a latent-threshold framework. The pooled latent-z estimate was -0.50 (95% credible interval [-1.08, 0.09]), corresponding to a threshold-equivalent PTSD prevalen
