Brain parenchymal arterioles (PAs) are high-resistance vessels that branch off pial arteries and perfuse the brain parenchyma. PAs are the target of cerebral small vessel disease and have been shown to have greater pressure-induced tone at lower pressures than pial arteries. We investigated mechanisms by which brain PAs have increased myogenic tone compared with middle cerebral arteries (MCAs), focusing on differences in vascular smooth muscle (VSM) calcium and ion channel function. The amount of myogenic tone and VSM calcium was measured using Fura 2 in isolated and pressurized PAs and MCAs.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether nitroxyl (HNO), a redox variant of the radical gasotransmitter nitric oxide (NO) with therapeutically promising properties, affects colonic ion transport. The recovery of the fluorescence intensity showed a good linear relationship with the concentration of Pb(2+) added from 0.05 to 6 μmol L(-1). A detection limit of 0.02 μmol L(-1) was achieved. Detailed protocols for the preparation of CdSe nanocrystals coated with a multishell structure of ZnS and their surface modification based on the successive ion layer adsorption and reaction method are described. The first phase of the synthesis produces a hydrophobic surface consisting of a TOPO/HDA ligand mixture. This is followed by a surface modification of the quantum dots (QDs) with 3-mercaptopropionic acid by the phase transfer method. The modified QDs become soluble in aqueous systems such as water or buffers for further biological applications.

Thin carbonized polydopamine (C-PDA) coatings are found to have similar structures and electrical conductivities to those of multilayered graphene doped with heteroatoms. Greatly enhanced electrochemical properties are achieved with C-PDA-coated SnO(2) nanoparticles where the coating functions as a mechanical buffer layer and conducting bridge.
