Multi-slice real-time MRI of temporomandibular joint dynamics.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this work was to improve the clinical versatility of high-speed real-time MRI studies of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dynamics by simultaneous recordings of multiple MRI movies in different sections. METHODS: Real-time MRI at 3 T was realized using highly undersampled radial FLASH acquisitions and image reconstruction by regularized nonlinear inversion (NLINV). Multi-slice real-time MRI of two, three or four slices at 0.75 mm resolution and 6 to 8 mm thickness was accomplished at 50.0 ms, 33.3 ms or 25.5 ms temporal resolution, respectively, yielding simultaneous m

Prosthetic joint infections due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis: A retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: Tuberculous prosthetic joint infection (PJI) is uncommon and often diagnosed late. The objective here is to describe the management of tuberculous PJI at an osteoarticular infection referral center. METHODS: A single-center retrospective study of patients managed between 1987 and 2016 was performed. RESULTS: We identified 9 patients with a median age of 80 years. The hip was involved in all 9 patients. A known history of tuberculosis was noted in 2 patients and tuberculosis was present at other sites in 4 patients (lung, n = 3; urinary tract and scrotum, n = 1; and spine, n = 1).

[Pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia presenting with bone and joint pain].

We report on three cases of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia presenting with bone pain and arthralgia as initial symptoms. At the first visit, their primary signs were recurrent bone pain and arthralgia, without significant peripheral blood abnormalities. It took 2-4 months to confirm the diagnosis from the onset of arthralgia due to this atypical presentation of the disease. Definitive diagnosis was obtained by bone marrow examination, and in all cases, complete remission was achieved by chemotherapy. As a feature of imaging, MRI exhibited diffuse bone marrow signal changes in T1-weight

[Effects of Tongbi capsule on joint lesions in rabbits with rheumatoid arthritis].

The purpose of this experiment is to observe the effects of Tongbi capsule on joint lesions in rabbit with rheumatoid arthritis induced by ovalbumin and explore the mechanism in order to provide reference for clinical application of Tongbi capsule. Rheumatoid arthritis in rabbits was induced by subcutaneous injection of emulsions of ovalbumin and Freund's complete adjuvant and intra articular injection of ovalbumin. After successful modeling, 30 New Zealand rabbits with arthritis were randomly divided into model control group, the high, medium and low dose groups of Tongbi capsule (90, 45, 22.

Nonlinear association structures in flexible Bayesian additive joint models.

Joint models of longitudinal and survival data have become an important tool for modeling associations between longitudinal biomarkers and event processes. The association between marker and log hazard is assumed to be linear in existing shared random effects models, with this assumption usually remaining unchecked. We present an extended framework of flexible additive joint models that allows the estimation of nonlinear covariate specific associations by making use of Bayesian P-splines. Our joint models are estimated in a Bayesian framework using structured additive predictors for all model

Intra-articular synovial sarcoma in the ankle joint: A case report.

Intra-articular primary soft tissue sarcomas are extremely rare. The present case report describes a case of intra-articular synovial sarcoma of the ankle joint. A 51-year-old man presented with complaints of swelling and progressive pain in the right ankle. Lateral radiographs of the ankle revealed lytic invasion of the anterior and posterior parts of the talus. Computed tomography imaging revealed a low-density lesion with calcifications around the ankle joint. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed that the diffuse lesion was isointense on T1-weighted images and hypointense to hyperintense on

Neglected Iatrogenic Elbow Joint Dislocation. Didactic Case Report.

We present a case of a neglected dislocation of the elbow joint. A 28-year-old patient suffered elbow joint dislocation with fracture of the radial head after a fall from a considerable height. Following a failed attempt at manual repositioning, the dislocation was reduced surgically and free fragments of the radial head were removed without stabilisation with a Kirschner wire. The joint was immobilised for 6 weeks in an arm-to-hand plaster cast, followed by two weeks during which an elbow joint orthosis with adjustable flexion was worn. The patient then attended rehabilitation. The first foll

Vascularized second metatarsophalangeal joint transfer for radial deficiency - an update.

Vascularized second metatarsophalangeal joint transfer offers a possibility to reconstruct the radial support which is lacking in radial dysplasia. Our experience from 1987 to 2017 with 34 congenital radial club hand reconstructions have allowed a possibility for long-term evaluation of the method. Compared with conventional methods, second metatarsophalangeal joint transfer results in better wrist mobility and does not restrict typical ulnar growth. The balance of the wrist remains good until age 11. Thereafter, the growth of the vascularized bone graft transfer matches only partially the dis

A Pulsed Electrical Joint Stimulator for the Treatment of Osteoarthritis of the Hand and Wrist.

The hand is commonly affected by osteoarthritis (OA). The development and progression of OA are believed to involve inflammation, even in the early stages of the disease. Inflammatory and proinflammatory cytokines have also been shown to be elevated in the flexor tenosynovium of idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). A large percentage of patients with hand OA also have a concomitant CTS. This study evaluated the results of a pulsed electrical joint stimulator in patients who had hand OA with or without CTS. Pain, tenderness, and swelling; grip strength and pinch force; and Patient and Physi

A study of the reproducibility and reliability of the musculo-articular stiffness of the ankle joint.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the reproducibility, reliability and usefulness of the musculo-articular stiffness (MAS) of the ankle joint, measuring it by the free vibration technique. Seventeen (nine males and eight females) healthy university students were included in the study. Force (f), MAS (k) and unitary MAS (ku) (defined as the ratio between the value of stiffness k obtained in the test (absolute terms) and the value of force (f)) were obtained. A test-retest protocol was designed and performed on the same day to determine the short-term reproducibility of f, k and ku. Sho

Hand and wrist joint procedures in patients with scleroderma: a systematic review.

We aimed to examine if joint procedures in hands and wrists of patients with scleroderma could be performed without major morbidity and conducted a systematic review of the literature to assess this hypothesis. Studies were identified in four different databases; soft tissue procedures in scleroderma patients were excluded, and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines were followed. Seven studies out of an initial total of 203 articles were included. One-hundred and twelve scleroderma patients with a total of 402 joint procedures in the hand and wrist were

Temporomandibular joint anomalies in pediatric craniofacial Gorham-Stout disease.

PURPOSE: Gorham-Stout disease (GS) is a rare and little understood bone disease that leads to the progressive replacement of the affected bone by fibrous tissues. The mandible is the most commonly affected craniofacial bone, but there is no report to date of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) lesions in this condition. We aimed to characterize the involvement of the TMJ in this uncommon bone disorder. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively included all patients managed for craniofacial forms of GS in our pediatric institution over a period of 12 years. We collected clinical data on TMJ function

Decompressive laminectomy without fusion for lumbar facet joint cysts.

Lumbar synovial facet joint cysts cause nerve root compression and radiculopathy. Excision of these cysts is often performed for patients with significant symptoms. There is uncertainty regarding the need for performing a concomitant arthrodesis to prevent spinal instability. This study was performed to assess the rate of postoperative spinal instability with patients undergoing laminectomy without fusion for treatment of lumbar facet joint cysts. Patients who had received a decompressive laminectomy for excision of lumbar spinal cyst(s) without fusion from 2000 to 2015 were reviewed. Their pr
