Antimicrobial Evaluation of Chlorophyll-Containing Nettle Extract Both in Free Form and Incorporated into Poly-3-Hydroxybutyrate.

This work is devoted to the electrospinning of biocompatible fibrous matrixes for microbial wound therapy. The problem of treating staphylococcal-infected wounds remains urgent. In this study, we propose a new approach to the use of the chlorophyll (Chl) and poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) composite system in the treatment of infected wounds. The structure and properties of the electrospun polymer matrix based on PHB modified with various concentrations of Chl was investigated by SEM, confocal microscopy, DSC, EPR. The release rate, fluorescence, and antimicrobial activity of Chl incorporated int

Macaque monkeys in Zika virus research: 1947-present.

Zika virus was first isolated in 1947 from an exotic rhesus macaque. Nearly 70 years later, the emergence of Zika virus in the Americas and its newly described association with birth defects has motivated the development of captive macaque monkey models of human Zika virus infection. This review describes similarities between macaque and human Zika virus pathogenesis and discusses specific advantages and disadvantages of using macaques instead of other laboratory animal models. In particular, macaques provide an outstanding model for understanding in utero Zika virus infections that are essent

A 73-year-old woman with persistent diarrhea and onychomycosis.

We present a case of a 73-year-old woman who presented with chronic watery diarrhea, weight loss, and frequent sinus and nail fungal infections. Her previous workup with a gastroenterologist failed to reveal any causative agent for her symptoms. She considered herself healthy until a thymic tumor was discovered and removed years ago. Subsequently, she developed multiple sinus infections refractory to treatment. Relevant immunology laboratory tests were conducted, which led to the diagnosis. This case illustrated the need for a detailed history and thorough immunologic assessment, and the requi

Increase in Reports of Strongyloides Infection - Los Angeles County, 2013-2014.

During the 1990s, reports of infection with the nematode (roundworm) Strongyloides stercoralis submitted to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) ranged from 40 to 50 per year, but by 2000, reports had decreased to five per year; in 2006, Strongyloides infection was removed from the LACDPH reportable disease list. Currently, it is only reported at the discretion of Los Angeles County clinicians and laboratories as an unusual disease occurrence. LACDPH currently only monitors case counts and does not investigate reported Strongyloides cases. During 2013-2014, an increase i

Hyperreactive Malarious Splenomegaly and AIDS: a case report.

Malaria is endemic in the North of Brazil. However, Hyperreactive Malarious Splenomegaly (HMS) has been rarely described. Splenomegaly in HIV/Aids infection has a large differential diagnosis, but malaria is a cause of gross splenomegaly, regardless of the HIV status. In this paper, we report the case of a 50-year-old man, HIV positive, with massive splenomegaly and multiple malaria infections in the past. He fulfilled the criteria for HMS, received a short course of anti-malarial treatment and weekly quimioprofilatic Chloroquine. In 9 months, he had great clinical and laboratorial improvement

New Molecules in Babesia gibsoni and their application for diagnosis, vaccine development, and drug discovery.

Babesia gibsoni is an intraerythrocytic apicomplexan parasite that causes piroplasmosis in dogs. B. gibsoni infection is characterized clinically by fever, regenerative anemia, splenomegaly, and sometimes death. Since no vaccine is available, rapid and accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment of infected animals are required to control this disease. Over the past decade, several candidate molecules have been identified using biomolecular techniques in the authors' laboratory for the development of a serodiagnostic method, vaccine, and drug for B. gibsoni. This review article describes newly ide

Natural infection of turkeys by infectious laryngotracheitis virus.

The infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) is an important respiratory pathogen of chickens that also infects pheasants and peafowl. Epidemiologically non-related commercial turkey flocks with clinical signs such as tracheitis, swollen sinuses, conjunctivitis and expectoration of bloody mucus were examined for the presence of the virus. Laboratory ILTV detection was performed by virus isolation in embryonated eggs and cell cultures, PCR and sequencing of amplification products, histopathology, indirect immunofluorescence and electron microscopy. One ILTV turkey isolate was also experimental

[Hyperlactacidemia during antiretroviral therapy: frequency and clinical-therapeutic correlations].

While asymptomatic hyperlactacidemia is quite a frequent phenomenon among HIV-infected patients treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), lactic acidosis is a rare, but potentially life-threatening occurrence. Epidemiology, clinical and laboratory presentation, evolution, and outcome of this phenomenon are currently under intensive investigation, and the most likely pathogenetic pathways seem to involve mitochondrial toxicity prompted by the administration of nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors. Our case-control study on an extensive, single centre population treated f

OPSI (overwhelming postsplenectomy infection) syndrome: a case report.

Splenectomized patients are likely to suffer from severe infections, such as sepsis and meningitis. This syndrome is called overwhelming postsplenectomy infection (OPSI) in Europe and America. We present an adult case of OPSI syndrome, which occurred as respiratory insufficiency, and thrombocytopenia. The course is rapid, the clinical symptoms are serious, and the prognosis is very poor. Clinical examination showed cyanosis, mandibular hypertonia, psychomotor anxiety and purpura. Laboratory findings were thrombocytopenia, leukocytosis, hypoglycemia and altered coagulation parameters. The AIDS patient with abdominal pain: a new challenge for the emergency physician.

As the prevalence of HIV infection continues to increase, EPs will be called upon to evaluate increasing numbers of AIDS patients who have abdominal pain, some of whom will require emergent surgical intervention. In addition to the myriad causes of abdominal pain in the nonimmunocompromised patient, the differential diagnosis in the AIDS patient includes a wide variety of opportunistic infections and neoplasms (Table 5). Evaluation frequently requires extensive laboratory studies and cultures and advanced imaging (CT, ultrasound, and so forth). A low threshold for surgical and other subspecial

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and the risk from blood or blood products.

The occurrence of iatrogenic cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and the isolation of infectivity in some laboratory transmission studies in transmissible spongiform encephalopathies raises the possibility that CJD might be accidentally transmissible through blood or blood products. Epidemiological evidence, although not conclusive, does not suggest that classical CJD is transmitted through this route. However, new variant CJD (nvCJD) might pose greater risks of accidental transmission of infection and mechanisms to reduce the theoretical risk are under consideration. The theoretical risk

[Cutaneo-mucosal hyperpigmentation in AIDS. 4 cases].

Four cases of pigmentation of the skin and mucous membranes in homosexuals of the IVC1 group (CDC classification) are reported. The aetiological investigation, although incomplete, pointed to a medicinal origin which could not be formally confirmed. The drugs suspected were azidothymidine, pyrimethamine and ketoconazole. There was no clinical or laboratory evidence of adrenal insufficiency. The few published cases of cutaneo-mucosal pigmentation in HIV infection, often mimicking adrenal insufficiency, emphasize the need for thorough toxicological investigation; this may avoid prescribing an un

Comparison of the Clearview Chlamydia test, Chlamydiazyme, and cell culture for detection of Chlamydia trachomatis in women with a low prevalence of infection.

Two antigen detection systems, Clearview Chlamydia (Unipath Ltd., Bedford, United Kingdom) and Chlamydiazyme (Abbott Laboratories, North Chicago, Ill.), were compared with culture for the diagnosis of chlamydia infection in women attending gynecological clinics. Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from 43 (4.5%) of the 965 women tested. In comparison with tissue culture, the Clearview Chlamydia and Chlamydiazyme tests had sensitivities of 79.0 and 74.4%, respectively, and both had a specificity of 99.6%. The results show that the Clearview Chlamydia test is comparable to Chlamydiazyme for the d

Parenteral acyclovir therapy for herpesvirus infections in man.

Acyclovir is a new antiviral agent which is highly active against herpesviruses in vitro and in laboratory animals. Twenty-three cancer patients with cutaneous and/or systemic herpes zoster or herpes simplex infections were treated with parenteral acyclovir. All had received previous specific treatment for their malignant disease and ten had undergone bone-marrow transplantation. The drug seemed to arrest the progress of the infections and was most effective when given early. Although two patients showed transient increases in blood-urea, possibly the result of acyclovir, the drug was remarkab

Creutzfeldt--Jakob disease.

The laboratory transmission to animals of an apparently degenerative disease of the nervous system, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), is now well established. Important questions arising from this observation are the possibility of natural transmission or infectivity and the existence of other similarly transmissible diseases. Epidemiological studies have revealed some possible clusters of CJD and also an association with previous craniotomy, but there is no definite evidence of natural infection. A few instances have been reported of experimental CJD in animals following inoculation with mater

New knowledge of chlamydiae and the diseases they cause.

The trachoma and LGV organisms, the human pathogens of the species C. trachomatis, cause oculogenital infections and disease syndromes of the eye and genital tract. The incidence of the most prominent disease, endemic trachoma with eye-to-eye transmission, is decreasing all over the world. At the same time there is increasing recognition of high-frequency venereal infections with trachoma organisms and of the genital disease and occasional ocular disease that they cause. Laboratory techniques for diagnosis and investigation are improving, but work with these interesting intermediate agents rem

Navigating Potential Dengue and Its Mimics in a Febrile Returning Traveller: A Case Report.

Fever is a common symptom in returning travellers. This prompts healthcare providers to consider and investigate potentially serious infections requiring timely diagnosis and management. The following case describes a traveller returning from Bangladesh presenting with symptoms indicative of dengue. These include fever, rash, nausea, vomiting, myalgia and conjunctivitis. However, his symptoms defied the expected pattern of presentation, posing a diagnostic challenge. No laboratory confirmation of prior dengue infection was available. He was discharged as having a viral fever with a rash and th

A comprehensive review on superficial mycoses, classification, conventional/new therapeutic approaches and fungal-drug resistance.

Mycoses (fungal infections) are highly emerging threat to public health globally. Among six million fungal species, less than 1 % is pathogenic and infects peoples. Most of them affecting skin, nail and hair, which are very common diseases known as superficial mycosis. These diseases include superficial candidiasis (vaginal, cutaneous, oropharyngeal), malasseziaspp (seborrhoeic, pityriasis versicolor) and dermatophytosis (ring warm, tinea pedis, tinea capitis). In particular cases, superficial infections may cause invasive infections, whose occurrence is growing partly owing to an escalation i

Guidelines for diagnosing and differentiating infection with antifungal-resistant Trichophyton indotineae from other dermatophytoses.

This review attempts to find a crucial set of criteria that can be applied to diagnose infections caused by Trichophyton indotineae, based on laboratory and clinical characteristics derived from other studies. T. indotineae has emerged as a new species from the anthropophilic Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton interdigitale. The close relationship between T. indotineae and these two species makes it difficult to distinguish them based on morphological and physiological features. Resistance to terbinafine was first observed in T. indotineae, and later to other antifungals, which incre

Dengue and COVID-19 co-infections: an important consideration in the tropics.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has affected >370 million individuals worldwide. Dengue is endemic in many countries and leads to epidemics at frequent intervals. In the tropics and subtropics, it is possible that individuals may be concurrently infected with both dengue and SARS-CoV-2. Differentiation between the two infections may be difficult from both a clinical and laboratory perspective. We have outlined the currently published findings (as of the end of December 2021) on patients with dengue and SARS-CoV-2 co-i
