BACKGROUND: A shallow active layer of soil above the permafrost thaws during the summer months which promotes microbial growth and releases previously confined pathogens which result in bacterial epidemics in circumpolar regions. Furthermore, these permafrost sources harbor several antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) which may disseminate and pose a challenge for pharmacologists worldwide.
AIMS: The authors examined the potential association between climate change-induced permafrost thawing, and the resulting release of antibiotic-resistant pathogens, as well as the potential impact this can h

BACKGROUND: The intrinsic concentration of RpoS, the second most abundant sigma factor, varies widely across the E. coli species. Bacterial isolates that express high levels of RpoS display high resistance to environmental stresses, such as temperature, pH and osmolarity shifts, but are less nutritional competent, making them less capable of utilising alternative nutrient sources. The role of RpoS in antibiotic resistance and persistence in standard laboratory domesticated strains has been examined in several studies, most demonstrating a positive role for RpoS.
RESULTS: Using disk diffusion

This review addresses the involvement of DNA supercoiling in the development of virulence and antibiotic profiles for uropathogenic Escherichia coli and the emergence of new pathotypes such as strain ST131 (serotype O25:H4). The mechanism suggests a role for topoisomerase enzymes and associated mutations in altering the chromosomal supercoiling state and introducing the required DNA twists for expression of intrinsic β-lactamase by ampC and certain virulence factors. In Escherichia coli, constitutive hyperexpression of intrinsic ampC is associated with specific mutations in the promoter and at

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance is an emerging problem worldwide, endangering antimicrobials efficacy and resulting in high rates of morbidity and mortality. It is one of the major concerns that health care facilities are facing nowadays. Mainly, extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL)-producing Enterobacterales play a role in hydrolyzing β-lactams, specifically the third-generation cephalosporins. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of fecal carriage and molecular characterization of ESBL-producing Enterobacterales among Lebanese elderly residents in a long-term care facility

BACKGROUNG: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is on the rise worldwide. Tools such as dynamic regression (DR) models can correlate antimicrobial consumption (AMC) with AMR and predict future trends to help implement antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs).
MAIN BODY: We carried out a systematic review of the literature up to 2023/05/31, searching in PubMed, ScienceDirect and Web of Science. We screened 641 articles and finally included 28 studies using a DR model to study the correlation between AMC and AMR at a hospital scale, published in English or French. Uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most common bacterial infection in women. Since 1948, the relationship between urinary pH and antibiotics (ABs) has been established. We aimed to search for the best urinary pH for each family of antibiotics and to assess whether pH changes bacterial susceptibility to them. We included in vitro research and in vivo studies including one or more bacterial species and tested the effect of one or more ABs at different pH values. We also included randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) in uncomplicated UTI (EAU guidelines 2019 definition), ch

This study investigated antibiotic resistance (ABR) and extended-spectrum ß-lactamases (ESBL) patterns in bacterial isolates collected from the dairy, hotel, meat, and canteen food waste samples. A total of 144 bacterial strains were collected and screened for resistance against 9 standard antibiotics belonging to three generations and ESBL production. The ABR profile of the bacterial isolates was observed against all four major antibiotic groups (aminoglycosides, β-lactams, quinolone, and others), where resistance against cefotaxime (> 70%) and methicillin (> 50%) was high. Though the ABR pat
