Percutaneous toxicity of dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) in rats.

Contact hypersensitivity reaction (CHS) is a T-cell-mediated skin inflammatory reaction to cutaneous exposure to small sensitizing chemicals, haptens. While the significance of local inflammatory skin response to the hapten application in CHS induction and expression is known, there is paucity of data concerning systemic inflammation in CHS. In this study, changes in cellular (peripheral blood granulocytes) and humoral (plasma tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α levels) components of inflammation during sensitization of rats with two consecutive applications of dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) were exami

Diagnostic criteria of urinary tract infection in male patients with spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: The current diagnostic criteria of urinary tract infection (UTI) in male patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) are not clear. METHODS: The authors studied 381 episodes of "symptomatic" UTI (209 participants) and 277 episodes of "asymptomatic" UTI (205 participants) in male SCI patients using intermittent catheterization. UTI was defined as a bacterial count ≥10(2) colony-forming units (cfu)/mL (American Paraplegia Society criterion). Univariate analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis were used to determine optimal cfu and white blood cell (WBC) thresho

'Lewisham scoring system' to facilitate the clinical diagnosis of empyema.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with empyema of gall bladder have a higher mortality rate. We hypothesised a scoring system, which we call the Lewisham Score, to predict the development and diagnosis of empyema. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patient with histologically proven acute cholecystitis who underwent operation over a five year period (2004-2009) were selected and a retrospective cohort analysis of those who developed empyema vs. simple acute cholecystitis was performed. Various parameters and the Lewisham score were compared. RESULTS: Patients with empyema were elderly females with a higher C-reacti

Comparative haematological study of single and mixed infections of mongrel dogs with Trypanosoma congolense and Trypanosoma brucei brucei.

The haematological effects of single and mixed infections of Trypanosoma congolense and Trypanosoma brucei brucei were compared in experimentally infected mongrel dogs. Twenty mongrel dogs of both sexes aged between 3 and 6 months, and weighing between 2.5 and 5.9 kg were used for the study. The dogs were kept in clean metal cages in a fly-proof house and were adequately fed and given water ad libitum. The twenty dogs were divided into four groups of five dogs each. Group I dogs were uninfected control, group II dogs were infected with T. congolense, group III dogs were infected with T. brucei

More than just counting eosinophils: proximal oesophageal involvement and subepithelial sclerosis are major diagnostic criteria for eosinophilic oesophagitis.

BACKGROUND: According to American Gastroenterological Association Institute criteria, the diagnosis of eosinophilic oesophagitis (EOE) requires clinicopathological correlation. In the appropriate clinical context, a high eosinophil count (HEC, defined as >or=15/HPF) is considered pathological evidence of EOE. However, HEC may not always be identified in biopsies given its patchy distribution, and there may be histological overlap between EOE and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) in the distal oesophagus. AIMS: To evaluate the utility of subepithelial sclerosis and HEC in proximal oesop

[Cytokine production in relation to the rate of infestation in patients with chronic opisthorchiasis].

The aim of the investigation was to study the specific features of in vitro cytokine production in response to specific parasitic antigens, mycobacterial antigen, and nonspecific mitogens in patients with chronic opithorchiasis who had varying infestation rates. There was a considerable increase in the mononuclear cell production of interleukin-4 and interleukin-10 after specific Opisthorhis antigen stimulation with purified tuberculin derivate or the mitogen conconavalin A in opisthorchiasis patients having varying infestation rates as compared with appropriate parameters in healthy individua

Twenty-one year old woman with severe eosinophilia and left bundle branch block.

Peripheral and tissue eosinophilia can occur in a wide variety of disease processes that include infectious, allergic, and primary hematologic disorders, and other more rare diseases such as hypereosinophilic syndromes (HES). We describe a case of a patient with severe eosinophilia and left bundle branch block. A 21-year-old woman with asthma and allergic rhinitis presented with neck pain and cough for >6 months with no other complaints. Physical exam was normal except for fever and minimal expiratory wheezes. Chest CT revealed diffuse airway inflammation with bronchiectasis. Admission electro

Paracoccidioides brasiliensis pancreatic destruction in Calomys callosus experimentally infected.

BACKGROUND: The wild rodent Calomys callosus is notably resistant to Trypanosoma cruzi infection. In order to better characterize this animal model for experimental infections, we inoculated C. callosus intraperitoneally with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, a thermally dimorphic fungus that causes a chronic disease with severe granuloma formation in the mouse and humans. The dissemination of P. brasiliensis cells through the lungs, liver, pancreas, and spleen was assessed by histological analysis. RESULTS: The animals were susceptible to infection and showed a granulomatous reaction. C. callos

Glycopeptide-induced neutropenia: cross-reactivity between vancomycin and teicoplanin.

OBJECTIVE: To report teicoplanin-related neutropenia that developed after an episode of neutropenia induced by vancomycin therapy. CASE SUMMARY: A 57-year-old female suffered from osteomyelitis of the left humerus, with a white blood cell (WBC) count of 2.8 x 10(3)/mm3 and absolute neutrophil count (ANC) of 0.28 x 10(3)/mm3, occurring after 24 days of vancomycin therapy. Vancomycin was changed to teicoplanin and the agranulocytosis resolved 4 days later. However, a new episode of neutropenia, with a WBC count of 2.8 x 10(3)/mm3 and ANC of 0.448 x 10(3)/mm3, occurred 11 days after teicoplanin

Systemic onset juvenile rheumatoid arthritis presenting with absence of B lymphocytes.

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is a complex disease involving the interactions of several cell populations with different mediators. Herein, we report a five-year-old girl with systemic-onset JRA. At admission, peripheral blood flowcytometric analysis showed the percentages of CD19(+) and CD20(+) B cells were <1%. These values returned to normal on the tenth day of steroid treatment. This is the first report of JRA presented with absence of B lymphocytes in the literature and suggested that lymphocytes subset analysis could change with treatment in patients with JRA. Different clinical si

Canine parvovirus type 2 vaccine protects against virulent challenge with type 2c virus.

The ability of dogs vaccinated with a live attenuated CPV type 2 (Nobivac Intervet) vaccine to resist challenge with a current CPV2c isolate was investigated. Six SPF beagle dogs were given the minimum recommended course of vaccination, comprising a single inoculation of vaccine (Nobivac Lepto+Nobivac Pi) at 8-10 weeks of age followed 3 weeks later with a parvovirus vaccine in combination with distemper, adenovirus and parainfluenza virus (Nobivac DHPPi) and a repeat leptospirosis vaccine. Six control dogs were kept unvaccinated. All animals were challenged orally with a type 2c isolate of CPV

Lesions in the suprachiasmatic nuclei suppress inflammatory mediators in sensitized rats.

BACKGROUND: Although bronchial asthma is well known as an inflammatory disease that shows obvious circadian rhythms of airway narrowing, it remains to be elucidated whether the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), a major circadian pacemaker, regulates inflammatory mediators relevant to asthma. Thus, we investigated the effects of electrolytic lesioning of the SCN on the antigen-induced immediate allergic response and the late allergic response (LAR) in male Brown Norway rats, i.e. in a model of allergic inflammation. METHODS: The immediate allergic response, assessed by the histamine levels in pla

Strongyloides hyperinfection presenting as acute respiratory failure and gram-negative sepsis.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Disseminated strongyloides is a rarely reported phenomenon and occurs in immunosuppressed patients with chronic Strongyloides stercoralis infection. Typically, patients present with pulmonary symptoms but subsequently acquire Gram-negative sepsis. Several cases have been noted in Minnesota, and their presentation, diagnostic evaluation, and clinical outcomes were reviewed. DESIGN: A retrospective chart review was conducted of complicated strongyloides infections from 1993 to 2002 in Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN. Cases were identified by reviewing hospital microbiology databa

Cerebellitis in an adult with abnormal magnetic resonance imaging findings prior to the onset of ataxia.

BACKGROUND: Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings during acute cerebellar ataxia in cases of postinfectious cerebellitis are frequently normal. This has resulted in the use of other imaging modalities, such as single-photon emission computed tomography, to aid diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: To illustrate the chronologic occurrence of cerebellar ataxia, abnormal findings on MRI, and cerebral spinal fluid pleocytosis in an adult case of postinfectious cerebellitis. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A patient with a 6-week history of occipital headaches and only mild tandem gait difficulty had a
