OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the involvement of the iliotibial band (ITB), the anterolateral ligament (ALL), and the anterior arm of the biceps femoris in MRI-diagnosed Segond fracture and to evaluate other associated findings of Segond fracture.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the MRI of 13 cases of Segond fracture. The studies included proton density-weighted, T2-weighted, and proton density-weighted with fat saturation images in the three planes. We studied 2 cadaveric specimens with emphasis on the ALL. One cadaveric specimen was dissected while the other was sectioned in the

We report a case of an internal carotid artery (ICA)-ophthalmic artery aneurysm with penetration of the opticnerve. In addition, this case penetrated the falciform ligament, which severely disturbed optic canal unroofing during surgery. This is the first reported case in which penetration of the optic nerve and falciform ligament has been shown. To remove the anterior clinoid process in this case, the ultrasonic bone curette was a useful tool.

Variable bony anatomy at the skull base may result in compression or entrapment of exiting cranial nerves. The authors present an unusual variation of bilateral ossification of the roof of Dorello's canal and review the germane literature. Clinicians might consider ossification of the petrosphenoidal ligament (also called Gruber's ligament) in patients with unexplained cases of abducens nerve palsy.

BACKGROUND: It is known that small alterations in tunnel positioning during anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction significantly affect ACL length and tensioning patterns as well as alter force vectors and joint kinematics.
PURPOSE: To compare the amount of inadvertent posteriorization of the ACL tibial tunnel anatomy during transtibial ACL femoral reaming in the "over-the-top" position with a full femoral reamer versus a half femoral reamer, in comparison to the native tibial ACL footprint. It is hypothesized that the half reamer will result in less distortion of tibial tunnel anato

We investigated the effects of scapholunate ligament injury on in vivo radiocarpal joint mechanics using image-based surface contact modeling. Magnetic resonance images of 10 injured and contralateral normal wrists were acquired at high resolution (hand relaxed) and during functional grasp. Three-dimensional surface models of the radioscaphoid and radiolunate articulations were constructed from the relaxed images, and image registration between the relaxed and grasp images provided kinematics. The displacement driven models were implemented in contact modeling software. Contact parameters were

The transverse carpal ligament (TCL) forms the volar boundary of the carpal tunnel and may provide mechanical constraint to the median nerve, leading to carpal tunnel syndrome. Therefore, the mechanical properties of the TCL are essential to better understand the etiology of carpal tunnel syndrome. The purpose of this study was to investigate the in vivo TCL stiffness using acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) imaging. The shear wave velocity (SWV) of the TCL was measured using Virtual Touch IQ(TM) software in 15 healthy, male subjects. The skin and the thenar muscles were also examined as

Intrasubstance tears of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) were once considered a rare injury in skeletally immature athletes but are now observed with increasing frequency. Treatment strategies have evolved as recent studies have identified unique considerations specific to the skeletally immature patient. The current literature now supports the trend toward early operative treatment to restore knee stability and prevent progressive meniscal and/or articular cartilage damage, but the optimal approach to ACL reconstruction in this age group remains controversial. Despite the reported clinica

Tendon-bone healing is crucial in success of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery. Demineralized bone matrix (DBM) is a physiological component that has the inherent potential of bone regeneration. We hypothesized that the alternative bone substitute can affect the structural properties of tendon graft in tibial tunnel healing. Five 12-week-old New Zealand white rabbits in study group underwent unilateral ACL reconstructions plus the application of 0.5 cc DBM in the tibial tunnel. The assessment included radiological assessment and histologic and immunohistochemical analyses

The causes of pain after an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction are numerous and may have complex origins. We present an unusual case in which pain after an ACL reconstruction developed secondary to a giant cell tumour of the bone occurring around a fixation screw in the distal femur, with an associated fracture through the femoral tunnel of a previously well-functioning reconstruction. We discuss the aetiology and the treatment of a complex clinical scenario.

BACKGROUND: The evidence in favor of early surgical treatment of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in children is increasing. However, the controversy regarding the safety of such a procedure in young athletes with wide open physes remains unresolved.
METHODS: We reviewed prospectively collected outcome data on consecutive patients who had undergone transphyseal ACL reconstruction at either (1) an age of less than fourteen years and Tanner stage 1 or 2, or (2) an age of less than twelve years and Tanner stage 3. Children who had less than four years of follow-up, who were younger than

BACKGROUND: In recent years, significantly more attention has been focused on the role of the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) in patellar stability, and MPFL reconstruction has become a mainstay of surgical treatment of episodic patellar dislocations. Although previously described in detail after reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament, tunnel enlargement has not been investigated after MPFL reconstruction.
HYPOTHESES: (1) Femoral tunnel enlargement occurs after MPFL reconstruction. (2) Patella alta, trochlear dysplasia, and tunnel malposition are risk factors for tunnel enlarg

BACKGROUND: Hank's balanced salt solution (HBSS) and milk have gained wide acceptance as storage media for avulsed tooth. However, the effect of the media and storage time on the periodontal ligament (PDL) cells involvement in the development of root resorption is still unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether precultured PDL cells in HBSS, milk, or modified Eagle's medium alpha (α-MEM) would affect osteoclastogenesis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: PDL cells were precultured in HBSS, milk, or α-MEM for 1 h or 6 h before being co-cultured with RAW 264.7 cells for an additional 3 day

Development of a cyclops lesion is a well described complication after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. It commonly results in gradual extension loss during the early postoperative course, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the soft tissue nodule attached to the ACL graft is needed. Cyclops lesions are easy to diagnose based on the symptoms and MRI findings. Previous study showed that 78.6% of cyclops lesions had extension loss within 6 weeks postoperatively, and the diagnosis of 92.8% cases of cyclops lesions was established within 6 months. This article describes a case o

PURPOSE: The aim of this meta-analysis was to compare the results of arthroscopic single-bundle and double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.
METHODS: We systematically searched electronic databases to identify randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in which arthroscopic single-bundle was compared with double-bundle for ACL reconstruction. The search strategy followed the requirements of the Cochrane Library Handbook. The outcomes of these studies were analysed in terms of graft failures, Lysholm score, negative pivot-shift test, KT1000 arthrometer measurements, knee extenso

NEL-like protein 1 (NELL1) is a newly identified secreted protein involved in craniosynostosis and has been found to promote osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of NELL1 on osteogenic differentiation of human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) and the potential underlying mechanism. hPDLSCs underwent lentivirus-mediated NELL1 transfection (Lenti-NELL1) and markers of osteogenesis were assessed [alkaline phosphate (ALP), osteocalcin (OCN) and calcium deposition] to evaluate the effect of NELL1 on the differentiat
