OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the performance of the optic disc-macula distance to disc-diameter ratio (DM/DD) in qualitative and quantitative assessment of optic disc size.
METHODS: In 300 apparently normal eyes, we determined the correlation between DM/DD and the planimetric disc area (DA) and evaluated the performance of DM/DD in discriminating between small and large discs. The ability of DM/DD to predict the actual DA was validated in a separate cohort of 200 eyes. The disc size in eyes with glaucoma or related diseases was compared with DA- or DM/DD-based disc size.

AIMS: The development of multifunctional nanoplatforms capable of simultaneous therapeutic and diagnostic applications is a growing focus in biomedical research.
METHODS/MATERIALS: In this study, silver sulfide - silver nanoparticles coated with bovine serum albumin (Ag₂S-Ag@BSA) were synthesized via a one-step biomineralization method at room temperature. Methotrexate (MTX), a chemotherapeutic agent, was chemically conjugated to the nanoparticles to enhance targeted anticancer activity. Comprehensive characterization using FTIR, UV-Vis, XRD, TEM, and DLS confirmed successful synthesis.

We describe mortality in children with HIV in Vietnam during the COVID-19 pandemic. We followed 1234 children (median age 11.9 years) at three hospitals during 2020-2023; 260 had COVID-19. Eleven (0.9%) children died, mostly due to poorly controlled HIV. Mortality was higher than in the prepandemic period (2016-2019) (0.29 vs. 0.09 per 100 person-years; P = 0.033), likely due to decreased access to treatment, testing, and medical intervention during the lockdown, as well as financial difficulties.
